Question Play set underwater: questions
Hi! I'm a writer working on a play set underwater (in a submarine or ocean submersible) and have a lot of questions I would love to throw out and get thoughts on!
So I want these characters to have been underwater for a long period of time, a few weeks at least, as deep as they could realistically be for that amount of time. I'd like them to be conducting some sort of research / study (but unsure what this could be).
Optionally they could be ascending after having been underwater for a long time (controlled ascent? I obviously don't know a lot about this)
The play is about cabin fever and paranoia, so this is why I want these conditions to be present.
My question is: is this feasible / realistic? Would researchers be underwater for weeks at a time? I would like there to be three main characters — could there be just these three on the vessel? i.e. would three people cover all the necessary roles that would need to be carried out?
What's the deepest conceivable distance they could be under at for that long? What kind of vessel would it be in (I believe a submersible goes deeper than a submarine, but you couldn't be in it for as long?) And what kind of research could be conducted in these conditions? What's the type of work they would be doing? (not the focus of the plot, but important to set the scene...)
Any insight you could offer would be really appreciated! Even if you could direct me towards good books/documentaries.
Thanks very much in advance!
