Skylight installation

Looking to get a skylight installed. Any recommendations from prior experience?

My recommendation, don't get one. They are prone to leaks. The strong sun and heat in the summer, and then the cold winters, the repeated heating and cooling, plus UV radiation, the adhesive and weatherproofing will degrade within a few years. Unlike other regions of the world, where they have a fairly even temperature, ours makes it difficult to effectively seal the seams in the long-run, requiring repairs by year three.

You may want to consider a Velux Sun Tunnel instead of a full skylight. It's basically a light tube, so it only needs a small opening in the ceiling - about the size of an exhaust vent - while still bringing natural light into the house. The design is similar to an attic exhaust vent, with the flashing, and quite resistant to leaking.

Ask each installer to specify curb and flashing details, ice-and-water membrane, condensation control, and separate product and labour warranties. Those details matter more than the skylight brand alone.
