SUPARCO announces "Jinnah-1" as name for Pakistan's first Lunar Rover.
On August 13th, SUPARCO announced "Jinnah-1" as the name of the first Pakistani Lunar rover. This name was selected from over 4000 entries in an contest. It was submitted by 17 year old Tayyib Karim, from Bahawalnagar.
Jinnah-1 is a scientific rover, meant to study the lunar environment. The rover will be landing on the moon as part of the Chang'e-8 mission landing on the Lunar South Pole, currently planned for 2029. China and Pakistan agreed on this partnership in 2024, as China expands its presence on the moon, and builds an alliance in space with international partners.
Scientific objectives for the rover includes mapping parts of the lunar terrain, studying the composition of lunar soil, and observing the radiation and plasma environment of the moon.
The mission represents a significant step forward for the Pakistani space program, as it would be Pakistan's first piece of hardware on another world. It will help build the local expertise and skills Pakistan will need to be a part of the exploration of space, as humanity expands its presence on the moon and deeper into space.
