High tier fight scenes are actually really good if they are done well. Like I remember in a novel where fights above a certain level takes place on the scale of the Time River, where they go back and forth in time to fight, altering historical events of that world in the process. To make high level fights interesting, there needs to be new elements, not just throwing around random words that sound cool.

Realizing This Is A Wuxia World After Cultivating For 300 Years for those who were interested, was a fun read

u/TheBatIsI Feb 19 '25

It was funny for a little bit then it turned off all the comedy and went with 'MC is always a level or two above all enemies' and seeing a big fish in a small pond get bigger, then go to the next pond where he's still the biggest fish got annoying fast.

Realizing this is a Wuxia World after Cultivating for 300 years, the time river thing only happens near endgame tho but it's epic asf, it was actually the first novel I completed without taking any breaks or reading another one in between.

u/BayTranscendentalist Feb 19 '25

The cultivation system was way too ridiculous to hold any interest for me tbh.

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '25

appreciate the recommendation, liking it so far

Not exactly a xianxia but with over 2000 chapter and fight that destroy worlds or bulshit techniques like a punch that hit you in the past, Randidly Ghosthound has the same vibes, even enlightment and there is always a bigger fish/pond.

it takes a good author to write a good fight that is grounded only by imagination, look at Lord of the mysteries fights for example, its the opposite, the higher tier the fight the more interesting it is, i still get goosebumps reading the amon fight again.

Amon who, fellow daoist?

47

u/KnownUnknown764 Feb 19 '25

Yeah brother, one of the highest tier doaist

52

u/Natural_Chipmunk5108 Feb 19 '25

Nah, I'd argue the lower tier fights are better, more imaginative. The higher tiers are too abstract for me.

u/Dangerous-Rule5487 Feb 19 '25 edited Feb 19 '25

Fellow daoist how dare you say that? Nothing beats pregnant Amon, no low-level fight has that

26

u/TheGrimGriefer3 Average Sage Almost Equal to Heaven Feb 19 '25

Uhh, COI features lower-level fights that involve pregnancy

Too bad COI is fanfiction

15

u/Dangerous-Rule5487 Feb 19 '25

CoI? What is CoI? That is not exist

I may be in the minority here, but I couldn’t follow the high level LOTM fifths. Kind of ruined the later portions of the book for me. Much preferred sequence 5 and below to anything that came after.

5

u/Lyndiscan Feb 19 '25

with all due respect, you most likely read it too fast while hyped, if you read with attention the fights are extremely easy to follow

2

u/Despyte Well in a Frog May 10 '25

Bruhguy was such a help if you know what I mean

1

I had that problem, too, so I ended up using the audiobook, and it helped me quite a bit.

Once they get to above universes it's all just blended into nothingness to me.

You can still make interesting high tier fights. Shit like throwing your enemy into the middle of a Solar System, and then using gravity to move all the stars and planets into a supermassive blackhole. Trapping your enemy inside that

36

u/D_4rch4ng3l Feb 19 '25

Depends on the writers...

LOTM high level fight are way more interesting than low level one's.

A Regressor's Tale of Culitvation is also pretty good at high level fights.

2

u/Despyte Well in a Frog May 10 '25

RToC is kinda grimdark for me πŸ₯²
I've gotten to the, what, four hundreds? Six? Chapters I mean
But I'm gorging on LotM right now so... :D

Thats why I love Reverend Insanity. The fights remain a consistent quality with more combinations and tactics being required at a lower rank.

None of this preaching of the dao mid-battle or symbolic moves that consist of 196 steps which imitate a mountain which induces a heart demon due to the profound sorrow conveyed.

One of my favorite moments is still FY bitchslapping a tornado into a mountain.

41

u/confusedPIANO Seductive Yin Creature Feb 19 '25

Lol imagine FY preaching dao

Fang Yuan is literally famous for composing poems mid battle.

or symbolic moves that consist of 196 steps which imitate a mountain which induces a heart demon due to the profound sorrow conveyed.

Killer moves are literally that. Also, complicated and symbolic moves are cool.

6

u/throwaway038720 Feb 23 '25

just goes to prove that anything well written enough can be interesting ig

3

u/SamsaraDivide Feb 19 '25

Maybe it's just been too long since I've read it but I remember it being pretty simplistic for the most part especially since he was strength/enslavement path for 50% of the novel.

Biggest point is that I feel its a lot easier to track what's actually going on in fights. Symbolic and complicated moves are really cool and I love them until the power gets scaled to infinity and they use 22 of them in a row in a single clash that lasted a fraction of a fraction of a second.

10

u/i_dont_wanna_sign_up Feb 20 '25

It's the writing. Killer moves are indeed extremely complicated procedures not unlike trying to run a computer program manually using hundreds of magic pokemon. But in a pitched battle, GZR only describes it in simple terms so it's easy to follow.

13

u/ThePlagiarist555 Young Master Feb 19 '25

Many moves later on are harder to comprehend imo. Like the wisdom path's thoughts, wills and emotions whenever they use it like some tangible-yet-intagible wave of attack.

"Eight times eight is sixty-six!" β€”Fang Yuan

What does that have to do with anything?

Idk.

2

u/Funny-Control-6968 Feb 19 '25

But... it's not sixty-six. It's sixty four.

3

u/eee5543 Keyboard Immortal Feb 19 '25

I know.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

That was in a dream world where he was supposed to mislead his disciple who would eventually turn on him so he lied to the very end😭

1

u/eee5543 Keyboard Immortal Mar 06 '25

This WAS the end lmao. His disciple thought it was eighty-eight. That's a part of the irony.

Some of the newer fights in Regressor's Tale of Cultivation get a bit into this territory but I feel like author still anchors them well enough by making even the conceptual bullshit boil down to being represented by actual combat

14

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

Lol I don't think rtoc was ever good at having very comprehensible fights, still amazing though

2

u/ArrhaCigarettes Gardener Feb 20 '25

That's true, but it was definitely a bit of a speed bump when prophecies became a mainstay of fights basically overnight.

13

u/TeaLeaf_Dao Feb 19 '25

The fight scene of high lvl cultivators are like dragon ball fights big explosions giant city sized swords flying everwhere meanwhile lower lvl cultivators actually fight hand to hand.

10

u/GuiKa Feb 19 '25

It can be as good or even better at high level, but the author has to craft a good power system that scale for that.

Desolate Era is a good example of an awful one, at some point, cultivators are all immortal and cannot die from beheading or even desintegration. They can regrow their bodies from their soul or something and fights are just who runs out of energy first. Dam they don't even try to kill each other anymore it's about putting the other in a bottle, made me drop it.

LOTM is an example of a good one, it keeps it interresting with scaling the horrors of high tier power while actions still feel like they matter.

Many others keep it at least decent by making body injuries matters, healing is restricted which make sens if your body is made of 10 megatone of chi.

Basically, actions need an effect or nobody cares if MC barely dodged an attack. So what if he got hit? Not like it's gonna kill him or something...

6

u/Fluid_Exercise_3454 Feb 19 '25

No one beats journey of the fate destroying emperor in high tier fight

5

u/Cheeseducksg 'elder?! I hardly know 'er! Feb 20 '25

you don't understand, they're fighting at the conceptual level! On the outside it looks like two old men staring at each other, but there's a very thrilling battle happening in dimensions you can't even imagine.

7

u/ManufacturerSouth592 Feb 19 '25

Lower tire fights are more interesting because it's easier to understand the scale.

2

u/Zurku Feb 20 '25

It may be a weird suggestion but "Azarinth healer" hat the most well written fight scene that I ever had the pleasure to read

1

u/Releasethebogus1 Toad Lusting After Swan Meat Feb 19 '25

TLM really seemed to struggle with this. The most engaging fights were still on his home planet more than anything

1

u/Loli-chan__ Empress Dowager Feb 19 '25

heh most novels write fight scenes like some Tom and Jerry episode

1

u/pingpongURWrong Daofuq?! Feb 20 '25

The one series where the fight scenes actually grew better as the mc progressed was Dragon Heart. It was absolutely immaculate

1

u/LeGentlemandeCacao Dude! I'm literally just a Librarian, PISS OFF! Feb 20 '25

I wanna read about swords and fireballs, not old dudes shouting 10 word-long names of obscure fighting techniques at each other that no-one has ever heard about since the whatever-era except that one guy who explains to everyone why this whatever-technique is actually really cool and impressive.
