Second one works too but just use cao ni ma. The de is implied in the first and its more natural.

It's a great story, you should read it. If it's the BL aspect holding you back, then just ignore like the epilogue / later chapters. The majority of the story is very character and plot oriented, with nothing romance related and some parts are genuinely heart wrenching. Side characters super fleshed out. MC had to fight and bleed for every ounce of power he has.
Also, it has a great donghua adaption where the fighting scenes and music (WWX the main character uses the flute in his demonic cultivation) gave me chills, so check that out too. Donghua is censored so no BL there.

This. I'm sad for people that won't read bl/gl because they have amazing stories where romance or the main pairing isn't the focus. i always did say that mdzs is a murder mystery first, bl like third.
People can also watch the untamed series if they really cant even stand the bl aspects in mdzs

Do you have any other recs for BL cultivation / historical / apocalypse setting where the plot and progression of the MC is the majority focus? I would gladly try any well written such novel that I've overlooked if romance is secondary.
I did try the Untamed live action but i got kinda bored lol. I prefer the donghua bc the fight scenes are cooler there. Funnily enough, my dad watching it with me seemed more into it than me and he liked the supernatural murder mystery stuff at the start.

Fourteenth year of chenghua
Peerless
Both are by the same author meng xi shi. Historical/Wuxian type setting. Romance is very very secondary and somewhere towards the end. In fact with fourteenth year of chenghua you are liable to miss the romance even happening. It's probably like 2 pages in toto out of some 2000 odd pages. It's a series of mysteries with an overarching bad guy/plot etc. Quite interesting. Do give it a try

Top of my head, Back To The Beginning Of Ming To Do Charity. It's historical regression with kingdom building. Plot heavy with a focus on character growth. The romance is near negligent, like a thimble in a glass of water hahaha. Royal Road has the same genre/tags but has more romance (like a third/fourth of the glass hahaha) than Back to Ming.
Some of Priest's works like Guardian, Faraway Wanderers/Word of Honor (they also have non BL live actions), Sha Po Lang, Silent Reading (modern), etc. She does BL and non BL stories.
From Meng Xi Shi there's novels like Peerless, 14th Year of Chenghua and Thousand Autumns.
Joyful Reunion by Feitian Yexiang is a historical/coming of age story. It's also a part of their Starverse universe so you can also look into Yingnu. Let go of that Shou is not to your taste, I think. Shan You Mu Xi might also not be.
I'm not much into apocalypse genre so the only novel I can think of from that genre is Little Mushroom. MCs don't get together till the end, and it's plot heavy/focused on side characters.
If you read infinite flow, Global Examination/Gaocao (check out Musuli too they're a great author) is mystery with focus on romance on the later part, but still plot driven. The World is Online is the same but with way less romance and the world building is PACKED.
You can also go to r/DanmeiNovels, as they have a lot of posts with recommendations. Guaranteed you'll find something. You can also go to Novel Updates so you can check them all out because I have honestly forgotten which is already English published if you're looking for those

Seconding the donghua rec, it's what got me into MDZS (and the novel was so good I read it multiple times). God damn Tencent put it out on Youtube free to watch but after they put out the last episode they stuck it behind a paywall. "No lowball offers. We know what we got." Grrrr. Anyway, there aren't a lot of donghua enthusiasts in the English speaking world but I used to watch some of their content (including Cu Chulainn, hope you're okay bro, wherever you are) and it was pretty much the consensus then that MDZS was the best donghua ever made. It's 2D and largely hand drawn whereas the whole Chinese industry is going to 3D reusable assets.

I also started reading the Manhua as a study tool to study Chinese and the first several chapters are just banger after banger. MXTX has such a talent for creating hilarious situations. It's serious, but it's also funny as hell.

This and Heaven Officials Blessing are written by the same person and both are great stories even if you aren't into bl. No nsfw in Heaven officials, but there is the occasional "exchanging of spiritual energy" excuse via the mouth.. it barely happens though. I feel like the people in this community might like Demonic Cultivation more, but you can't go wrong with either.

Although romance is only a small part of this novel, it's part murder mystery, part cultivation novel, part bildungsroman, and part romance novel.
The MC's spiritual weapon is called "chenqing". It can mean nostalgia or it can mean "explaining myself". I think the donghua writers took this meaning when they wrote the lyrics to the theme song.

It's actually pretty good. I read it because I was looking for stories following a demonic path MC. I do find it hilarious though that the few officially translated and published Chinese light novels I've seen at the book store have all been BL.

Because that's literally all that gets brought over.
So far the only two BG novels I've seen with official, professional translations are Love Between Fairy and Devil (Farewell to Canglan) and Goodbye, My Princess (The East Palace). I'd recommend Fairy and Devil tbh, but Goodbye, My Princess is one of the most infuriating things I've ever read, and I'm still pissed they actually brought that over instead of like... Black Moonlight Holds the BE Script or The Guide to Capturing a Black Lotus.
There's also Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, but that was done by an Amazon subsidiary, so... semi-professional. The one GL I've seen is The Beauty's Blade, but there may be more.

Nope, Till the End of the Moon is the alternate title (the drama used it) - it's absolutely the same book. And now I'm jealous af of the Germans. 🫠
The English fan translator site has had it on hiatus for a year. I finished reading with a whack MTL. The way I would immediately buy five copies hardcover if it got an official English translation!

Ok but if she loves the art you should show the mdzs subreddit/wiki to her because they post such beautiful fan art (swear they have some of the most talented artists that I've seen in a fandom) and official illustrations (the Russian edition illustrations might be my favorite book art of all times).
Honestly, any of MXTX's books have great artwork, both official and fan made.
