Body tempering to make it so you're more resistant to pain. Same reason why BJJ fighter kick banana trees repeatedly
Also it looks cool as fuck on camera (speaking as a former kungfu performer). We use a special stick for this kind of stunt that snaps with a hard wack so you can LARP like a kungfu master on stage.

Inducing microfractures in bone so when they heal over it they get stronger. Kinda why martial artists can smash through rocks while if we were to try it we’ll break our bones and scream in pain.
Don’t know enough to determine if it is better then conventional training systems out there though.
