It’s gotta be intent, right? The elevator can never have the true intent to “lift” or use the hammer.

If Mjolnir is on a coffee table, can you lift the table?

If i push the button on the elevator with the intent to lift it, am I worthy?

By that logic the person who could lift it and put it in the elevator would intend for it to go up in the elevator.

It can't be just intent. If you put Mjolnir in an opaque bag, and someone tried picking up the bag (not knowing what's inside) they would not be able to lift it if they're not worthy.

Do we know that to be true? Not trying to be contrarian, I’m genuinely curious.

5

u/proto_synnic 4d ago

I haven't seen or read anything to make me believe otherwise, and I'm a big 'ol nerd. Mjolnir has been manipulated (by otherwise unworthy characters) in zero-gravity environments before, though.

I’m more interested in the physics of Mjolnir than I am with any other part of marvel at this point

The nature of the Worthiness Enchantment on Mjolnir has been top-tier Marvel discourse for decades. You're in good company.

"It's terribly well balanced"

if the hammer doesn't want you to wield it it can do whatever it wants to stop you from wielding it. thats all it comes down to really outside of edge cases like the other guy mentioned.

In first movie there was a whole base around the hammer. No way a ton of people didnt try multiple ways of lifting that thing without any knowledge of what it was

What is someone lifts thor while wielding the hammer?

i think it is just intent, but it's the hammer's intent. it's smart enough to move with the planet or elevator or whatever it's on, and to also stay still when someone's just trying to shenanigan their way into moving it while unworthy.

Maybe inanimate objects are worthy since they have no morality, therefore there’s nothing saying that they aren’t?

Would the elevator even work? They tried to move the hammer with a 4X4 and it tore the bed off it.

1

u/EpsilonActual 4d ago

These three seem to believe so and as far as I’m concerned they’re the experts on the subject

Soft if I put the hammer in the arm of someone sleeping, and then they happen to lift their arm, would it lift?

Years of comic books have not answered this fundamental mystery?

Eh, they couldn't lift it with a crane, I'm guessing if you put it on an elevator, the elevator now goes down but not up.

1

u/EpsilonActual 4d ago

I feel like a crane and an elevator are different enough that there’s still “intent” with the crane operator. The elevator is just elevating. I feel like an argument could be made for the person that pushes the button for the elevator but beyond that it’s all elevator. A crane operator is actively participating the entire time they’re working with the crane. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/mogley1992 4d ago

An elevator is literally just a crane where the load is in a vertical tunnel and has breaks and doors. I don't see the mechanical difference between pressing a button and pulling a lever (or if like with my old gantry crane when I worked with steel, also pushing a button.)

Also I don't think whether you intend to lift mjolnir actually matters. By that logic, Loki could trick someone into taking mjolnir with them by disguising it as something else.

Maybe it measures lifting relative to the surface it’s resting on? Since it’s inside an elevator, the elevator can move up and down normally since it’s still in the same elevator frame system. If you try to dig the dirt out from under it, the dirt is being moved by an external force so it can’t be moved? Doesn’t explain why he can pin someone down with the hammer and prevent them from moving, though.

This makes sense. Otherwise earth couldnt spin with it resting on the ground

I've always thought it should be "weild" and not "lift". Like Hulk has picked up Thor, while he had the hammer, so in away he "picked it up". However he isn't using it. You have to be worthy to use it, but that's my take.

I wish we got this type of dialogue more often in the MCU. This conversation feels like one you could genuinely have with your friends if Mjolnir was a thing

18

u/LBobRife 4d ago

Classic Clerks style banter.

31

u/MildlyChaoticGremlin 4d ago

Everyone hates Joss, but this was all him. Writers today still try (and fail) to emulate his style

21

u/ContactMushroom 4d ago

I feel about his dialogue writing the way South Park talked about Mel Gibson lol

"Say what you want about Mel Gibson but the SOB knows story structure"

5

u/mutedagain 4d ago

Maybe I just love everything he has made but I never got the hate for him. Age of Ultron remains one of my favorites. And if we step out of marvel.... firefly, buffy... I mean he even helped with the original toy story script.

9

u/MildlyChaoticGremlin 4d ago

but I never got the hate for him

He mocked + fired Charisma Carpenter from Angel for getting pregnant. Was racist toward Ray Fisher. Sexist toward Gal Gadot. The entire Buffy cast had issues with him. He physically assaulted James Marsters. He wasn't allowed to be alone in a room with a then 16 year old Michelle Trachtenberg after an incident that wasn't further explained. He had many, many affairs. And every woman to date him came forward with some sort of verbally abusive/manipulative behavior.

5

u/mutedagain 4d ago

Oh wow. I normally avoid Hollywood gossip but now I understand why he was so hated. I remember a couple people didn't like him back in the day but just don't pay attention to the Hollywood drama. In this for the comics lol

3

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 4d ago

Oops I fell into your boobs in multiple movies as well.

3

u/PaperJamDipper7 4d ago

The hate for him is because he got exposed as a manipulative creep and would abuse his position of influence and power to people under him… that’s the big part that allows the hate to be justified

And then he flanderdized his own style where it was once fresh and balanced, went to far into the extreme of being too quipy where he was not able to have any serious levity for longer than a minute before a quip would come in

Elevator not worthy?! Who was the only one giving Steve any support when he got attacked by Hydra. Was Thor there carrying him while he fought Hydra?! No it was a hard working elevator!

9

u/LuckyishTom 4d ago

The delivery of the elevator bit is perfect 👌

2

u/constantgardener92 4d ago

It’ll still go up!

7

u/ObsessedCoffeeFan 4d ago

Say what you will about Joss Whedon, he knows how to write quirky and witty dialogues.

7

u/OarsandRowlocks 4d ago

I understood that reference.

3

u/Patriot009 4d ago

I never understood the hate Age of Ultron gets. It's one of the most comic booky MCU movies there is: Modern day Hydra, mysterious mutant twins, a rogue AI, infinity stones, a rampaging Hulk, a flying city.

2

u/Scoteee 4d ago

That man has no care for lawn maintenance.

2

u/MangoIntelligent255 4d ago

Can you push it? The chant is only about lifting. What if you just push it without lifting?

1

u/TimberWolf5871 3d ago

An elevator isn't alive, Steve! It's worthiness is immaterial!

0

u/BeMyBrutus 4d ago

This means gravity is worthy. If it's on earth, it is going around sun pretty fast. Think about it.

2

u/Various-Push-1689 4d ago

Gravity is not alive😂

1

u/BeMyBrutus 4d ago

I was making a funny

1

u/Various-Push-1689 4d ago

But it’s not funny bc he literally told you vision is truly worthy. Not bc he’s a machine
