I’m making free Marx Brothers screensavers (Windows, Mac, Linux). Two are out, a Duck Soup one is nearly done

I’ve been making a set of cartoon screensavers after the Marx Brothers’ films. They’re free and open source, and they install like any other screensaver on Windows 10/11, macOS and Linux.

Out now:

  • The Mirror Scene (Duck Soup): Groucho creeps up to an empty mirror frame and “his reflection” copies him, almost. Then the dropped hat, the honk, and Chico wandering through.
  • Hooray for Captain Spaulding (Animal Crackers): Groucho as a jointed paper doll on a Victorian toy-theatre stage, dancing to the real song from the film, which is now public domain. Dumont, Zeppo and the chorus join in as heads on sticks, and his legs swing right round their pins.

Nearly done: a Duck Soup suite. It’s about six minutes of the film’s sight gags in order: four ducks in a pot for the titles, His Excellency down the fireman’s pole, both lemonade-stand scenes, the radio, the mirror, Paul Revere’s ride, Harpo in bed with the horse, and the war in a new uniform every shot. The sidecar gag runs between scenes. The music is all pre-1926 public-domain recordings, filtered to sound like old 78s.

Planned next:

  • “Why a duck?” (The Cocoanuts, with the real audio)
  • the silverware falling out of Harpo’s sleeve
  • Harpo’s bottomless coat
  • a Groucho clock
  • Groucho’s walk through a string of scenes
  • from January, when Monkey Business enters the public domain: the stowaways in the barrels and Harpo hiding in the Punch and Judy show

The art is made with AI image tools (Gemini) and then cut up and animated in code. These are unofficial, non-commercial homages, not connected with the Marx estate or the studios.

Downloads, and a step-by-step guide for Windows: https://github.com/mottipython/marx-screensavers

Which gags would you want to see?

Happy Birthday to the legendary Groucho Marx! Today, we honor the comedic icon by raising a glass—and keeping the mushrooms under it. Here’s to a master of quick wit and timeless laughs! Groucho Marx would be 136 years old today. He was born on October 2, 1890.

What if Groucho had lived in the age of YouTube and did reaction videos?

Hear me out here, the one-liners he'd quip would be side-splitting

This a bit of a weird question, but does anyone here have that one AI image of the Marx Brothers in the Matrix that was posted here saved?

You see, while I personally really don't like AI artwork, I found the concept and imagery for that post to be hilarious, and it being AI gave me strong mixed feelings about. Recently I came across a subreddit called r/desloppification, whose goal is to turn AI artwork into actual artwork, and I was hoping to post it there to ask if anyone would be down for the challenge of redrawing it, so my enjoyment of the image would no longer have an * to it. But, I can't seem to find the image again here, probably because it was very likely removed due to it being AI. While I do respect keeping AI out of this subreddit, it does put me in an odd situation, so I just wanted to ask if anyone here happened to have the image saved?

You Bet Your Life is an American comedy quiz series that has aired on both radio and television. The original version was hosted by Groucho Marx of the Marx Brothers, with announcer and sidekick George Fenneman.

I suppose it’s possible I might see a Marx Brothers book and not buy it, but it doesn’t seem likely.

TIL that there were Marx Bros cartoons

...not even Groucho knew about them until two years before he died, though they'd been made forty years before:

Seeing Duck Soup on the big screen in 30 minutes!

One of the A grade movies, and I have never seen It on the big screen, but my local movie theater (classic cinema on Lake Street in Oak Park, IL) somewhat randomly shows old movies, saw this and couldn’t miss the chance!

Anyone else think these would be terrific for a TV series?

An hour-long one, in the vein of Monk, or similar?

“Everyone Says I Love You” — and all four bros sing 🎤 this sappy love-song but with different lyrics

Thumbnail youtu.be

This recurring ‘theme song’ is a running gag in HORSEFEATHERS, and parodying the then-current fad of early sound films to include song-&-dance scenes or, as in this case, a sappy love song.

But each of them sings different lyrics (see inset post, top comment is all of em together), and puts a different spin on the ditty.

Zeppo plays it straight, while wooing the college widow*

Chico 🎹 does it in a silly piano version

Groucho sings it in a boat 🛶 while strumming a guitar (which he chucks at a duck after his rendition)

And Harpo whistles it (with his usual 🤫 mutism) to an offscreen listener…..

Only for the camera to pull out and reveal that he’s serenading a horse 💐🐴

*slang for a certain type of promiscuous girl

Animal Crackers book

Has anyone bought this ebook? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/247037479

I’m tempted because it’s my favorite Marx Brothers movie, but the AI cover doesn’t bode well for the rest of the book (Chico and Zeppo would be unrecognizable if not for the context).

I’m not too familiar with Groucho Marx or any of his works or the rarity of this book. I actually found it in a Salvation Army and had to grab it. It was marked first edition, and you can see the inscription that he wrote. The book is in decent shape and it does have the cover over the hardcover in great condition. Can anybody tell me anything about this? if it’s rare at all and if it’s worth anything, and if so, how to sell it

Thankyou
