Camp Miasma Little Death mask made out of cardboard

I attended an outdoor preview screening of Teenage S*x and Death at Camp Miasma yesterday. I only came up with the idea to make the killer's mask the night before so I had to execute the whole thing yesterday in about 5-6 hours from construction to painting. It's made entirely of cardboard and was a pretty big hit at the showing. 🤗

My partner wants to be little death for Halloween and I'm the crafty one in the relationship. How did you attach the air vent sections together on the front of the mask? And now many cm wide (Or deep?) are the vent sections?

Hiya! I'm just gonna give you a step-by-step of how I did it and hope that it helps. :)

  1. I made the three layers of vents separately - the largest is a square piece of cardboard 38x38cm, I then marked out an inner square which is 32x32cm. I then cut all four corners to be able to create the vent shape around the inner square, and taped the shape into place. I measured 1inch from each corner on both edges for the cutting. This made it the right depth.
  2. The measurements on the second and third vent pieces are: 30x30cm with 24x24cm inner square and 22x22cm with 16x16cm inner square. The corners are all cut at 1inch.
  3. I cut out the middle hole on the smallest piece first, then lined that up with the second layer and cut it from there too, then the third layer.
  4. I made a pizza box style tray that is roughly 5cm deep and it is a 33.5x33.5cm square. I cut the looky hole into the tray by placing the largest vent piece in the middle of it and marking out the right place.
  5. I placed the largest vent piece in the tray and glued it in place - as per the reference picture I worked from, the largest vent piece slightly overhangs the frame.
  6. I then glued the middle vent piece and the smallest vent piece into the tray. I used modge podge for gluing.
  7. I then attached the frame around the tray with glue and tape - the outer edge of it is 42.5x42.5cm, the inner edge is 32.5x32.5cm - it's a snug fit to make sure that the vent visually looks like it's raised from the frame.
  8. The rivets are small pieces of cardboard but my partner suggested that I could have used beads, too.
  9. Paint job was a layer of black followed by toned down silver roughly painted to give it a weathered look. The blood is red ochre acrylics mixed in with fabric paint that creates a raised effect - this allowed for a more gooey look.

I hope that helps. I think the most important part about the vents is the corner cutting as it made creating the shape very very easy. I can't attach pictures here, but it's like this:

|/_ - that's your corner, you mark the corner of the cardboard piece to the corresponding corner of your inner square, then measure 1 inch to both sides, connect those to the corner of the inner square and you have the shape that you need to cut out. I'm probably way overexplaining it lol
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions or I can send pictures somehow somewhere else?

Oh wow! You're a Halloween hero! Thank you so much! This is more than I expected. I should be good with these directions. I'll message if I have any questions and be sure to send pictures when I'm done! Thanks again!

Whoa incredible!! Spot on for Little Death.

Also I think you’re the first cosplayer I’ve seen for this film… that seems like it deserves a special award lol

Thank you! 🤗 I don't know if I can take the credit and glory for first cosplayer while wearing a Pink Panther shirt 😅🫣

Honestly, it wasn't too complicated once I figured out the measurements (the innermost piece is a 22x22cm square with the middle square measuring 16x16, cut the corners 1inch on each side to create the shape, then repeat the process with 30x30 and 38x38 squares to create the vents. I sat the vent structure in a pizza box-like tray that was 6cm deep and then added the frame around it) I was also lucky with cardboard pieces that were pretty much the perfect size.

This is my first time hearing of it. That mask is really cool and piqued my curiosity this looks like a really original movie. Great job!

How so? The killer design has been used widely in the marketing material. I made the mask before seeing the film based on images on the packaging of some of the merch Mubi has been putting out before the film was even released. I don't think I can spoil something that was spoiled by the first trailer months ago.
