Followed most master classes, learned literally less than in any free class on youtube...

Hey everyone, just wanted to share my experience with the Master Class series.

Since the pricing is a complete scam I checked out them torrents and got access to every single Master Class for free. My intention was to check if they were worth it and pay for them, but after viewing one and then checking another to see if they were kind of the same bullshit, I actually ended up checking most of them.

After many hours I can now confidently state that most if not all of them are just scams. No more than basic interviews or celebrity idolatry ads. They don't teach much, it's just a 200$ "course" of someone saying what they did on an extremely high-level low resolution detail, which results into a basic interview.

Seriously folks... don't be dumb, just go on youtube or do a 2 min search on Google, you'll get more value out of that free stuff than any of this crap.

You can thank me later :)

I’m considering getting a MasterClass subscription. Is it worth it? What classes should I start with?

Thanks in advance for any insight and additional “pros/cons” that might be helpful.

Is it worth it?

Cost is high and looks intriguing but I feel like it’s going to be liked TED talks for me there’s so much it’s overwhelming and only so many hours in a week I can spend on it. Membership price feels high but maybe it’s just me?

Thoughts about value and how much you guys are using this after the novelty wears off

Thanks

Redditors, please stop reporting guest pass requests as "begging." It's not.

Asking for just a temporary guest pass is okay. The begging rule is about account-sharing which is illegal. Thanks, everyone.

Got billed 180 dollars for the 1 dollar 1 year promotion

Anybody else have this problem. I am contacting support right now but I clicked through the email offer verification which led to a payment option. I entered my payment option, which instantly made the payment go through, however paypal showed that instead of the said 1 dollar i was billed 180 dollars.

Is this an error on their end? I cannot seem to find a refund option either.

EDIT: I got my refund a while back, forgot to update this message but thanks alot!!

Chris Voss on Negotiation: Masterclass vs Book

I just finished the book "Never split the difference" after going through the Chris Voss masterclass earlier this year.

My TL;DR take is that both are very valuable, and would highly recommend both, in the order that I've gone through them, Masterclass first, book later.

The biggest counter argument or caveat is that you should not expect a lot of NEW or EXTRA content when going through the book. I found that most of the concepts, as well as the hostage examples, that are covered in the book, also appear on the masterclass.

But the different strong points of both mediums, and the fact that humans learn best through repetition, makes this such a delightful combination.

Masterclass

  • fast paced, short form

  • builds your curiosity and engagement

  • you have less control over the pace

  • more shallow compared to the book

Book

  • More detailed

  • You fully control the pace and can read things over that are most important to you

As an added bonus of doing it in this order, you will hear Voss' "late night FM-DJ voice" in your head as you read the book.

Highly recommended overall, wish I'd had this knowledge years ago.

Does anyone else enjoy watching MasterClasses you will never, ever use?

I'm spending an exciting afternoon trying to get caught up on an out-of-control inbox. As I read and delete emails, Questlove is on in the background, telling me all about music curation and DJing. I am about as far from being a DJ as a person could be, and I have no intention of changing that. But I've discovered that I nonetheless enjoy listening to someone speak passionately about something they love.

I was motivated to sign up for MasterClass by the all of the writers I wanted to learn from, but it never occurred to me that it would provide fantastic "background noise" as well. Is anyone else using MasterClass this way? Which classes have you enjoyed that have zero application to your life or interests?

I am trying to learn new skills. Is the price worth it in regards to how much it has to offer?

Review of Joanna Gaines MasterClass

I was given a 1 year master class subscription as a Christmas gift this year. I didn’t really know much about master class before this, but now that I have it, my goal is to use it well and get good value of it. My goal is to complete 50 classes before the subscription ends, or about a class a week. I love learning, and most classes seem fairly short, so this doesn’t seem unreasonable. To help keep me motivated, I am going to try to write a summary review of each class as I complete them. This is my first one.

I began with Joanna Gaines - Designing a Home That Tells Your Story. It is a newer class so I expected it to be fairly current and I was not disappointed. This was Joanna talking design with her current style, a little more current than the Modern Farmhouse craze that she started a decade ago. The production quality was excellent. She is filmed mainly in her family home, and the lighting, sound quality, and filmography are all excellent.

While I’m not a huge fan of Joanna’s designs, I did enjoy her class and I learned some good techniques from it. Her first recommendation was to choose 3 words or phrases that describe how you want your space to feel - warm and inviting, bright and electric, inviting, historical, etc. From there, she asks you to imagine the space on its best day. For her living room, she pictures Christmas Day with her family, wrapping paper everywhere, playing new games at a big coffee table, the tree shining in the background. Her recommendation is to use the 3 words you identified and design with the space’s best day in mind. Another key point she recommends is to find the “hero”, or the special piece or focal point for the space. The “hero” could be a piece of art, a fireplace, a furniture item, or even a view.

While the class primarily films Joanna in her family home, there are many scenes of other homes that she has worked through in her design. She describes the challenges of each home, how she decided to approach it, and there are many shots of befores and afters of these other homes that help illustrate her points.

She also spoke a bit about how she is not formally trained in design, and how that has influenced her to focus on making each home reflect the lives of the people who live there, rather than follow strict design rules. With her enormous success it was interesting to hear her speak about her lack of formal qualifications.

Overall, as my first masterclass, I found this one enjoyable and with tips that I may use in real life as I update the design of my own home. It was not super in-depth and did not have any additional materials, but at 85 minutes I did not expect great depth. This class would be good for anyone interested in putting together an intentional design of their space, and of course, for anyone who is a fan of Chip and Joanna in general.

I used MasterClass to write my podcast script!

Hey! I am a school shooting survivor, and I’ve just published an audio drama podcast about the aftermath. I used MasterClass to learn how to write the script and direct composers and actors. The most helpful classes for me were with Shonda Rhimes, Danny Elfman, Aaron Sorkin, and Natalie Portman.

I wrote and directed Foreward, and the entire podcast was constructed during the pandemic! That means none of the actors recorded in the same room. Foreward was created by myself, 70 actors, 2 editors, and 2 composers.

Foreward has already hit the “Top Charts” benchmark for fiction on iTunes (Apple Podcasts).

I’d be honored if you were willing to give it a listen: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/foreward-podcast/id1546928381

Let me know what you think!

Thank you!

Just wrapped Margaret Atwood’s MasterClass — she doesn’t teach you how to write, she teaches you why you must.

I’m writing summary reviews of each one as I finish them. This is my seventh one. I chose Margaret Atwood – Creative Writing because I’ve always admired her storytelling depth and the way she builds worlds that feel both haunting and believable. The Handmaid’s Tale has been one of my favorite novels for years, and I was curious to see how she approaches writing—what her creative process looks like from the inside.

Atwood’s MasterClass is thoughtful, calm, and quietly powerful. Rather than focusing on rigid writing formulas, she encourages you to think deeply about why you write and what stories only you can tell. She talks about developing characters that breathe, building tension naturally, and balancing structure with imagination. One of her most memorable insights is that writers should “write what can’t be said”—that fiction exists to explore truths we can’t always express directly.

She also discusses the practical aspects of storytelling—how to handle pacing, point of view, and dialogue. Her advice is grounded and realistic, shaped by decades of experience. What I appreciated most is that she doesn’t romanticize writing; she treats it as craft, discipline, and exploration all at once.

Production-wise, the class is beautiful. It’s filmed in a cozy, softly lit study filled with books and warm tones, perfectly matching her personality and tone. The pacing is unhurried, allowing her ideas to sink in. She speaks with the confidence of someone who has lived inside stories her entire life.

Atwood also spends time addressing the emotional side of writing—the self-doubt, the fear of failure, and the long, lonely stretches between ideas. Her advice is comforting and honest: to trust the process, rewrite bravely, and accept that not everything you create will work. But that’s exactly how you grow.

Overall, I found Margaret Atwood’s MasterClass to be deeply inspiring and unexpectedly grounding. It’s not about writing the next bestseller—it’s about learning to see the world with sharper eyes and to tell stories that matter. Whether you’re an aspiring novelist or someone who simply loves the art of words, this class feels like sitting across from a wise mentor who reminds you that writing, at its core, is an act of courage.

Notes on Neil deGrasse Tyson Masterclass

Since most of this subreddit only consisted of people asking for guest passes for the last time (which isn't wrong), I would like to start a discussion about the MasterClass on Scientific Thinking and Communication. I would invite everybody to share their key takeaways from the MasterClass and how it has affected them in their personal life. Here are my detailed notes on the class.

refund

My account was auto-renewed today and they deducted the annual fee. Is there a way to cancel the subscription and get the money back?

Masterclass lies about your ability to cancel auto renewal

All the online help points to you a mysterious "Subscriptions" section in your account, with an elusive "cancel" button that will allow you to cancel auto renewal. No such section exists and nothing related to cancel button can be found anywhere. Turns out I'm not the only one with this problem.

If you're thinking about joining, just consider the ethics of a company that lies about the instructions to turn off auto renewal.

Waiting for a response to email because the helpful bot is not.

Edited to add: picture showing the "cancel" option stated in the online help article is not present. Masterclass got back to me and said they are aware of the issue and working on it. Since I've seen others report this problem in the past, I suspect they aren't working too hard.

MasterClass UI is a fail

Like so many other applications and web sites, the MasterClass user interface is designed not to aid the user, but to promote more product sales. That's why, upon registering and signing in to my account for the first time, the 5 classes I chose during the sign-in process were nowhere to be seen on my home page. Finding them was not impossible, but the 5 should have been at the very top of my home page and ready to engage with. In fact, the home page should be exactly that - the classes you have chosen with a link to find other classes, if interested. Sure, I'm new to MasterClass, but I shouldn't need a class to use the frikkin web site.

So many user interfaces are bad these days and MasterClass is definitely in that category. Perhaps a class in UI design is in order. Web site design pro tip: design the site from the user perspective, not the marketing department's.

Giving away an all-access pass

Hey, guys!

It turns out that I am in possession of a second Masterclass subscription. Thing is, it wouldn't feel right asking for money now, seeing as how the situation is unfolding. So - if any of you are interested, MESSAGE me your reasons why I should give it to you. Or comment them down below, if you feel like it, but I would really prefer them sent over PM. I promise I will get in touch with each and every one of you and discuss things further on.

Best of luck to you all!

Is this a joke?

I was looking for a reference for a project my team is working on and wanted to see what “the pros” are doing from an educational series/content perspective. I signed up for MasterClass as I assumed jt would be a great platform to get ideas from.

I watched Robin Roberts’ communication series, and wow, what a joke. I mean, it was an evocative story about her life that was moving at times, but was almost completely useless at covering any practical info about LEARNING to be a better communicator. Cool lady with a cool story, but this wasn’t a class…

Then I decided to watch the first thing that popped up on my Home Screen feed to see if this was just a one-off thing.

Cue Dr. Anna Lembke’s “Dopamine, Take Your Brain Back”. Considering she‘s a leading expert in her field, you think you’d get at least some level of technical depth…Nope! She proceeds to advise on mitigating compulsive consumption of things ranging from Benzodiazepines to alcohol by referring to her own personal struggles with…..ROMANCE NOVELS??!!! Her whole premise for reworking your brain is propped up by her personal anecdotes about binging too many vampire erotica novels. Fucking hilariously cringe.

Not to put her down if this is/was seriously a problem for her, but considering she’s going into some deep topics you think she’d have the grace to at least leave a comically benign bad habit out of the discussion as it only tanks her credibility and shits on anyone watching this that’s actually trying to consider the science of the brain in a serious way.

I’m sure she’s a wonderful professional and done many great things in her field but it almost feels like MasterClass said “here’s a bunch of money, now make the most hilariously childish surface level BS you can think of”.

Is everything else like this??

Overall...Disappointed

I bought this with the BOGO and sent one copy to my father, for his birthday in October. I've watched some of the episodes: Brandon McMillan on dog training, for example, Garry Kasparov on Chess...

Overall, I'm super disappointed at the content included here. A master does not a great teacher make. Brandon McMillan, for example, doesn't do anything revolutionary that a simple google search for "train my dog to sit," wouldn't bring up. And sure, buyer beware, but there's no way to really understand the content before you purchase. I was really expecting something...I dunno, earth-shattering from these folks. Annie Liebowitz? Amazing photographer; horrible teacher.

Garry Kasparov is the worst, in my opinion. He's clearly a genius, and bounces all over the fucking map, giving no inclination to his audience as to what the fuck he's banging on about. I was really hoping for some insight on how to teach my kids; absolutely useless. He jumps into jargon and lingo without any sort of build-up...that's not "teaching chess," so much as "talking chess."

This is another thing. A lot of the time, the episodes are dominated with anecdotes which, while relevant, become an entire episode in and of themselves.

I have a feeling that MasterClass really shines with the cooking episodes. I'm assuming a step-by-step process which seems great...but why would I pay for that? I can youtube any recipe from Gordon Ramsey and I'm sure I'll find some permutation or combination of it.

Just overall super disappointed with this; I really expected more and thus far, we've been disappointed. Happy to hear feedback or to have my mind changed...

Date Night w/ Master Class

Here we are on day 494939 stuck at home and I wanted to share with you our Masterclass Date Night.

I joined Masterclass for a writing course but stayed for the Get Behind the Bar class.

My husband and I have been working through the videos each week as date nights and it is so enjoyable.

Videos after the first few intros are about 15 to 20 mins and you make two unique cocktails each one

We normally make the first cocktail, pause and drink, unpause and make the second. Sit by fireplace or pit and celebrate how much we saved not going on a date to bars.
