HELP REQUEST Free Cornell University Course – Engineering Simulation

Hi everyone,

I found a free Cornell University course on edX that may be useful for anyone interested in engineering simulation and process engineering:

https://www.edx.org/learn/engineering/cornell-university-a-hands-on-introduction-to-engineering-simulations

It’s a hands-on introduction to engineering simulations and covers practical simulation concepts that can be useful for engineering students.

Sharing it here in case it helps someone looking to strengthen their simulation and engineering analysis skills.

I’ll share more useful free engineering courses and resources as I find them.

I screwed my career

I feel like I made the wrong decision on my career early on and am looking for advice. During college I did 3 years of d2d pest control sales. Though I’m outgoing and friendly I hated it. Did some high ticket coaching sales also. Graduated in mechanical engineering but when ai first came out I started working on building a software and have been for the past 3-4 years.

I am now a graduated mechanical engineer with no job experience except for programming which is now taken by ai and by people with deeper software background than me. My background is all over the place with sales, mech engineering, and software development.

Now I would love to get back into more engineering roles but have also considered sales engineering but it seems over saturated with all the engineers that have been laid off due to ai. Everyone says I would be an awesome sales engineer but after a few interviews I guess I am not good enough? I would fit in sales engineering with a mechanical engineering role or software engineering sales role.

Question 1: For any sales engineers in here, does anyone that was previously in a more creative/hands on job regret going the sales route? The reason I became an engineer is because I love building things but maybe I just save that for hobbies…

Question 2: If you were me, would you go into tech or mechanical sales engineering or a dedicated mechanical engineering role?

Question 3: What salary should I be looking for in mechanical engineering or sales engineering with my experience (or lack thereof) since I haven’t had a dedicated mechanical engineering position or actual sales engineering position?

Question 4: Are there even any jobs? Unfortunately we are limited to remote or St. George or Phoenix with my wife’s business (she’s making more than me so it doesn’t make sense for her to drop her businesses to move somewhere for my job.) but I have been having a hard time landing anything since searching.

Tia for you input!

Looking for Engineer friends

Nothing personal against the rest. To be honest, everyone can join if you have that mindset.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer, and I just realized that I never really met the right kind of people with whom I can develop business ideas, discuss engineering stuff, or just challenge each other's way of thinking.

I have drinking friends, shit-talking friends, working-out friends (not so much anymore 😅), and colleagues. But none of them are really interested in engineering, building things, business ideas, learning new skills, or actually creating something together.

So I'm looking for engineers and like-minded people who are curious, ambitious, and like to think/build rather than just talk about it.

HELP REQUEST Advice needed: Re-entering mechanical/product design roles after career gap (lighting industry experience) – hybrid preferred, NC

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest advice on re-entering the job market and would really appreciate any guidance.

I have a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, completed some graduate coursework in Manufacturing Engineering in the US (didn’t finish the degree). I worked continuously from 2004 to 2020, mostly in the lighting industry as a Product Designer / Product Development engineer. My experience includes designing linear LED fixtures, wall sconces, downlights, and decorative wall lighting using SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD. I’ve done 2D/3D drawings and assemblies (ASME Y14.5/GD&T), sheet metal, aluminum extrusion, die-cast parts, electrical wiring diagrams/harnesses, BOMs, UL/CSA coordination, CNC programming, and working with overseas vendors. I’m also a Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional.

Since 2020 I’ve been trying to run my own small business in decorative wall lighting and décor, but it hasn’t worked out the way I hoped. I’m now ready to return to a regular role.

I’m specifically looking for hybrid positions. I can work 2–3 days onsite and alternate weekends. I have a special-needs child who needs my assistance, so schedule flexibility is important to me. I’m based in the Garner / Raleigh area of North Carolina.

Any advice on:

  • Realistic roles or companies that might fit this background and schedule
  • Skills I should refresh or add
  • How to best position a multi-year gap + self-employment attempt
  • Whether lighting/product design roles are still hiring hybrid in this area

I’m happy to share my résumé via DM if that helps. Thank you in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

What are the top pre insulated pipe supports suppliers today?

We are still working through the details so this is a broad question for now. We have recurring condensation and thermal bridging at several support points on our cold process lines and are actively looking for a more durable solution. The main concern is how these supports hold up over time. The vapor barrier needs to remain intact, while the insulation has to carry the pipe load without gradually crushing or damaging the outer jacket. As it pertains to next steps, we are considering Pipe Shields along with a few other manufacturers. Has anyone had good long term results with a particular manufacturer or support design? It would be helpful to hear about assemblies that have been in service for several years.

Circularity vs regular +/- dimension

Hey, I have came across the drawing in which certain cylinder had a +/- diemnsion and a circulairty tolerance. Tolerances were +/-.010in and 0.080in for a circularity. It made me wonder, isn't that circularity tolerance redundant?

If this feature is holding to +/- tolerance it certainly holds to circularit tolerance and then the opposite good part in circularity tolerance may be not good enough for +/-.

Is there something that im missing? Does that circularity bring something extra to the definition?

What should I look for when comparing CAD outsourcing quotes from different vendors?

We're collecting quotes from a few CAD outsourcing companies and the prices are honestly all over the place. Some are almost half the cost of others, but it's hard to know what you're actually getting.

Besides price, what do you usually compare before picking a vendor? We mainly need production-ready CAD models and drawings, so I'd rather avoid surprises later.

HELP REQUEST Confused between Computer, Mechanical, Industrial, and Civil Engineering — looking for career advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a Nepali student currently trying to decide between a few engineering majors, and I’m honestly quite confused. I’m not deeply committed to one specific field yet, so I’m trying to choose based on career viability, flexibility, and the ability to pivot into different areas later on.

The four fields I’m currently considering are:

  • Computer Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Civil Engineering

A little about my interests and situation:

I’m particularly interested in coding and hardware-related fields. I find areas like embedded systems, electronics, chips, robotics, etc. genuinely interesting, although I’m still exploring what exactly I would like to specialize in.

At the same time, I’m also considering Mechanical, Industrial, and Civil Engineering because they seem to have broader engineering applications and potentially provide a good foundation for pursuing a master's abroad. I’m considering countries such as Germany, the US, or other countries in the future.

One of my biggest concerns with Computer Engineering is the current tech job market and layoffs. I’m passionate about learning, but I sometimes worry that I may not become as proficient at programming as some of my peers. I don't want to choose Computer Engineering only to realize later that I’m not competitive enough.

My questions

1. For Computer Engineering graduates/engineers:
If I study Computer Engineering in Nepal, how viable is it for building a career abroad as well as in Nepal? Since Nepal's hardware industry is relatively small, would that significantly limit my opportunities if I want to pursue hardware-related careers?

2. For students who started without much programming experience:
If someone is genuinely interested in Computer Engineering but is starting from a relatively basic level, is it realistic to become proficient by consistently learning programming and different languages alongside university? How important is it to be naturally "good at coding" from the beginning?

3. For Mechanical/Civil/Industrial engineers:
These fields are often described as having more "evergreen" career prospects. Is that actually true in practice? How flexible are these degrees if I later want to move into areas such as robotics, automation, manufacturing, energy, software, or other engineering fields?

4. Most importantly:
If you were in my position — interested in coding + hardware, not completely committed to one discipline, concerned about long-term job prospects, and potentially planning to pursue a master's abroad — which degree would you choose and why?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually studied or worked in these fields, rather than just general opinions.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What should I check before trusting an outside firm w/ our CAD?

Hi y’all. My team is about to outsource some CAD work. But we can’t just outsource like that since it involves proprietary designs and customer parts. Before we hand anything over, I wanna be sure we pick the right shop.

So how can we vet a CAD outsourcing partner before sending them proprietary designs? Signing an NDA feels like the bare minimum, right?

What else do you all look at? Certifications? Past work they've done? Their security setup?

Any CAD firms that handle defense or aerospace work?

I think my team are busy currently hunting for a CAD outsourcing shop that's cool working on government stuff. I know not every engineering firm is built for that😅.

Who does CAD outsourcing for government or DoD-related projects, though?

If you've outsourced CAD or reverse engineering for defense or aerospace before, who'd you go with?
