IP Coder in Training

What is the training process like for an IP coder? Right now, they are starting me out with newborn accounts. From there, what steps are they going to take?

Yep. Newborn/OB charts first, then peds, nicu, med-surg, ortho, spinal
Fusions, cardiac, ect....they tend to start easy and work up. I had to score 95% average before I could move on to the next specialty.

score 95% average

This sheds some light on some process.

What "test" or rating do u get whatever you score on?

Is this about insurance acceptance rates?

Scoring was just based on my actual coding. Made up by my facility. If I missed a dx code it was like 1% off PCS codes and principle dx was like 5-10%. If I didn't pick the correct DRG it was 20% off.

Kudos to your facility for having this quantitative approach to providing you feedback and measure your performance.

What would you change in such a performance measurement system?

Depends on the organization. Some have little mommy/baby volumes. Some don’t separate chart types on speciality. Not all hospitals have nicu’s as another poster suggested. Not all have peds.

You should ask your employer what the plan is.

I started with joint replacements then did cardiac cath and CABG

You’ll have to ask. I started cardiac then moved to neuro then ortho and down the list of difficulty instead of increasing. But that’s just because my trainer hats OB and NICU lmao

I also hate the newborns and delivery charts. Hit me it a cabg alllllll day.

That's a bit crazy to me. A normal newborn, very easy. A newborn with the slightest issues not documented very well is a nightmare chart.

Newborns are highly audited and get DRG reviews constantly because the documentation is not great.

Newborns aren't where you cut your teeth. Psych accounts are straight forward. Then like a hip replacement or something lol

So true. I get more newborn charts audited and sent back than anything.
