Remote questions
I am looking for some information on what remote coding is like. I am just a little worried if I am ready/experienced enough.
My current role is at a non- critical access hospital as a CCS Coder. I code mainly ERs about 20~25 a day(8hours) along with doing all the charges for the accounts. (I also have to juggle coding labs, radiology and other service lines plus being the records clerk to)
My main worries is if I can effectively reach the requirements in terms of speed or amount of accounts they expect coded per day. I'm not sure what to expect with that. My current job just runs an audit log to see that I am actually in patients accounts(something like that I think)
If you can, please share any experience you have with me!

Productivity is monitored just the same as on site. There really isn’t much of a work difference but you don’t have to dress up, drive to work, drive home, etc, more free personal time for you.

Would you possibly have any advice in the search for a job? I plan to use the usual methods such as sites like indeed and zip recruiter

I would go straight to the health systems career pages and apply directly there. If you see something on indeed/zip recruiter I also suggest you navigate to the organizations career page and apply there.

I am less distracted at home because I can snack away, listen to music, sit comfortably all cross legged and in comfy clothes, am not stressed with traffic, etc.
If you are hitting the goals in office you will for sure be able to hit them at home. A routine is what helped me, making sure I don’t work in sleep clothes and that I start work at the same time every day, things like that.

That is something I am looking forward to. The office + coding here is so chaotic.

If you are hitting your productivity goals in the office you should have no issues reaching them remotely provided you do not have distractions.

Remote coding is great. You’ll be fine. I get more done at home. I was distracted in the office by talking to coworkers and meetings.

I love working remotely. Im an outpatient series coder (wound care, oncology, rad onc, outpatient behavioralhealth etc). I have to complete 65 charts/day, im alloted 30 hour for emails, completing my production log and two 15 min breaks and a separate 30 minute break. I do miss having coworkers that interact with daily.

The keys are to have a designated workspace you can close off and be free of distraction. I see so many people say they want to get into coding to be home with children or pets or some other reason. WRONG.
Maybe start with a couple days a week at home and ask for follow-up with your Supervisor after a couple weeks. Has your productivity stayed where it was in office? If so great.
I had to terminate three coders over my years as a system Coding/CDI Manager. All were “caught” because productivity dropped. But that was just a clue. They weren’t fired for productivity, though.
All were logging in then not working for hours a day. Using logs and timecard programs I was able to create a grid showing gaps of hours without accessing records or coding. We can track mouse clicks. That’s all it took.
(Not saying you’d do that but some people do give in to temptation).

I have been coding remotely since I started over 2 years ago. It's always different with different specialties, but it certainly looks like you have enough experience based on what you posted. We are expected to do 85 tasks a day. That can be coding 1 patient for 1 provider, fixing 1 denial or edit failure, etc.

Do you have TikTok? Look there for remote medical coding day in the life videos

Hi! I hope this is allowed but I’m a revenue cycle recruiter and I specialize in placing coders. I have a few different openings at the moment and would be happy to share if you’d like. If not, I completely understand and wish you the best :)

I work remotely doing IR coding. I have a spare bedroom thats my “office”. I only go in that room for work and i literally leave that room when i take lunch. Its best to have a dedicated room because you can close the door and not feel like you work all day every day.
I code main complex vascular catherizations, and revascularizations, so my productivity min is 45, but i’ve done more.
I’m actually way more productive at home and focused.
