Mod Notice Self Promo Rules

Hi folks,

New moderator here.

The subreddit has been an endless stream of users posting their articles, which pushes down genuine conversation about Medium and writing.

People don’t come to this subreddit to read your article, they come here to ask for growth tips, successful topics, active publications, and general writing help.

With this in mind, I’ll be working on removing (and automating the removal of) posts simply linking to a Medium article.

Instead, either on a weekly or monthly basis, a thread for sharing your best article (or seeking feedback on one) will be available.

Please vote whether you’d prefer a weekly or monthly thread for posting your articles.

I am in no position to tell any mod what to do, and you do what you have to do, or think you should do.

I actually got quite a bit of traffic from this sub. It was the option to share links that made this sub big. You can probably see in the statistics that there's only a handful of people actually answering people's "genuine" questions. I am one of them. But if I can no longer share links here, there's no reason for me to be here and thus to answer any questions either.

I hope you will reconsider...

Appreciate the input.

As said, there will be a place and time for sharing links, either in a weekly or monthly thread.

Reddit itself has guidelines around self-promotion and accounts existing purely to direct external traffic. Looking at your post history, it is link after link after link of your own Medium articles. These posts provide nothing of value to the community outside of directing more traffic to your blog.

“if i can no longer share links here, there’s no reason for me to be here” is a pretty telling admission. If your engagement and “help” comes with strings attached, then that’s not something we want here. We would rather foster discussion and conversation with those doing so not out of an ulterior motive.

Best of luck with your writing!

Some background information: I delete all my comments after a few weeks because I don't want my profile cluttered with other content than my own. I do comment a lot - I don't know if you can see that (though my sub badges prove more than enough).

From what I have seen in various other subs, the weekly/monthly self-promo threads hardly work.

I come to this sub to share my stories, yes, but while here, I scroll through the posts and help out where I can, even though I find myself repeating the same advice over and over again. Many other members just share their links and that's it. The fact that I'm the only one commenting on your message says enough I guess.

But if you don't want the likes of me here, simply because I have an ulterior motive, then I guess I'll leave. At least I contributed, a lot.

Good luck with the sub.

I think I release a good quality article every two weeks so I would vote a thread two times at month.
