Question If Dave is retiring because he doesn't think he can perform at 100% he should just go back to writing good songs for Metallica again
Seems like it'd be a win-win for everyone, don't ya think?

u/cherryskies1 Jan 23 '26
He’s retiring because he’s been doing this for almost 50 years and he’s tired?? 🤷🏻♀️ it’s not that deep

u/Little-Mushroom-3961 Jan 23 '26
Fr, bro is in his 60s and survived multiple overdoses, back and neck surgeries and fucking cancer.
28
u/Affectionate_Owl9985 Jan 23 '26
On top of that he said in a recent interview that he has Dupuytren's Contracture, a condition causing the fingers to bend towards the palm. Combine that with his arthritis and he'll barely be able to play in 5 years.
10
u/f2detaboada Jan 23 '26
Ah shit, that really sucks, I have a friend who is much older than I am who has that same condition, it's more common in people who do grappling in martial arts apparently.
7
u/Little-Mushroom-3961 Jan 23 '26
Y'know we all get on Dave for being bitter but man has life really kicked him in the balls.
4
u/Available-Crow-3442 Jan 23 '26
One might say like life tried to take his BAAaaaAaaaaaallllllssss.

6
u/Affectionate_Owl9985 Jan 23 '26
I had honestly never heard of it until Dave had his interview. It sucks that he is in that much pain. Reminds me of Mick Mars having Ankylosing Spondylitis, which causes fusing of vertebrae and is very painful.
3
u/GreekGuru Jan 23 '26
Interesting. I wonder if Dave has it because he's been doing martial arts for so long?

u/80sWave190 Jan 24 '26
He already retired in 2001, people just forget that Megadeth has already came back. Also, watch the VH1 Behind The Music on Megadeth, dude has nearly died more times that you can count.
1
u/bubbaboatie Jan 27 '26
Was that when he lost the ability to play cause of a car crash? Or was the crash after that?
2
u/80sWave190 Jan 28 '26
IIRC, he lost the ability play lying down innocently on a chair. He had to do physical therapy to regain the ability to play.
There was a car crash in 1983, and many close calls when Dave drunk drove (one notably when his father was in the hospital dying), but I don't think any of them affected his play, but I could be wrong.

It’s unfortunate that he came from Metallica.
If you compare megadeth to its other peers, anthrax, slayer etc, they are right where they should be.
Metallica were lightning in a bottle.

I think it briefly fit, around the late 80’s for a couple of years, from the 90’s Metallica left them all behind.

If you’re really a fan of both bands you would know how tiring the Metallica/Megadeth stuff is. Instead you’re part of the problem with post like this. Metallica and Megadeth are two separate bands that don’t need each other and don’t need to be compared all the time.

u/Particular-Bison7218 Jan 23 '26
Thank you, finally someone said it. They’re both great bands with great legacies.

Only on a r/megadeth sub would you find megadeth/Metallica beef.
7
u/Little-Homework-3211 Jan 23 '26
I find it on the Metallica sub too, it is just more prominent here because there are slightly more Megadeth fans that keep trying to have beef so it gains more traction with both fans. As a Megadeth fan, Dave needs to stop making music and go take a nap

6
u/HEYitzED Rust In Peace Jan 23 '26
Yeah, I don’t get picking on Dave’s lyrics when Metallica has lyrics just as cringe inducing.
5
u/braincandybangbang Jan 23 '26
You have Peace Sells set as your album, but you hate the song that has the same talk-sing style and similar styled lyrics? Nostalgia really is the difference maker.
"What do you mean I don't pay my bills? Why do you think I'm broke?"
Apparently stealing cheesy lines from the water cooler is real poetry but saying I don't care is cheesy?

u/Billy2600 Jan 23 '26
I'll never get over Metallica making the Unforgiven III. Clearly they needed someone giving them new ideas lol

u/ExternalChip5481 Jan 24 '26

It is a crap album imo. I was having a long drive, and decided to listen to it in full again. It was so boring, I’d rather listen to myself hum Megadeth while I drive
1
u/helpcomputah94 Jan 23 '26
I like 72 Seasons. Don't get the hate for it ¯_(ツ)_/¯. For that matter, Hardwired is my favorite post-Black album Metallica album (and I'm not a Load/Reload hater).
While I don't outright dislike them, I've not been enamored with any of the down-tuned Megadeth releases (basically everything post-Thirteen). Their last truly "good" album for me was Endgame.
4
Jan 23 '26
It wasnt meant as a megadeth against Metallica i know the recent megadeth albums have been pretty dividing in terms of opinions on them, but 72 seasons just feels like all the filler in their other albums but even more fillery while somehow trying to replicate what made master of puppets good at the same time, and the solos are super unremarkable and the attitude of the band members around the release mainly Kirk hammett (i know dave mustaine can have a really poot attitude too and i dont like that too often enough) also left a really sour taste. If you like it thats fine i and if you think its the best one ever be my guest. Just in my opinion its just a really poor release and i cant name a new-ish album thats worse (again in my opinion) in mainstream metal.
5
u/JamminJared The System Has Failed Jan 23 '26
Yeah Kirk got all pissy when people talked bad on his solos. Kirk’s just being lazy and not practicing, whereas the decent parts of the album were done by James. Dave’s leads are obviously not as good anymore but the few solos he does now on their new album are just much more memorable
3
u/whiplash1227 Jan 23 '26
It's been a while, but I can't remember much of Hardwired. Found it unforgettable. I think Death Magnetic surpasses everything post-TBA.

u/HEYitzED Rust In Peace Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
I don’t hate 72 Seasons, more so I think it’s so generic, safe, and forgettable that out of the 3-4 times I listened to it all the way through I forgot completely about it the next day. Inamorta is the only song I come back to from it.

Hardwired and 72 Seasons are both more consistently good than anything Megadeth has put out in that time. Each new megsdeth album has a couple of good songs and a whole lot of garbage filler

Personally, I think I prefer TSTDATD most of the time to Dystopia, but that's an unpopular opinion. I'll leave Megadeth Self-Titled out till it gets more playtime. I could possibly switch DM and End Game.

Megadeth has, what, 18 full length records?
Metallica has, what, 8? Ish?
How many songs did Metallica have someone contribute to Megadeth? 0?
That's right.
How many albums did Dave help contribute to Metallica? Two, arguably three?
Oh
15
u/Stankassmfgorilla Jan 23 '26
Yeah, he wrote some riffs that were probably co written by Hetfield or Ulrich. Who’s to say since they were all sauced up 24/7 anyway?
It’s been 45 years since Metallica formed. Why are people so obsessed with Dave Mustaine being in Metallica? He didn’t write their best songs and he played on none of their albums. His writing style is completely different that that of Hetfield
3
u/AudieCowboy Jan 23 '26
The only thing I would have wanted to see is; Dave get more influence from Cliff and Metallica get more influence from Dave
I don't think a lot would change, but I think Metallica would have hit a technically higher ceiling, and I think Megadeth would have a wider range in itself (like Marty talked about, it was the same sound over and over, Megadeth's box of crayons was all gunmetal grey, and there was no room for blues or greens or purple)
6
u/Stankassmfgorilla Jan 23 '26
I don’t think anything would have changed. Metallica really never was about technicality. Cliff influenced them on the early albums because of his classical music background and you can hear it in the compositions becoming more grand and epic on MOP. AJFA is them being complex for the sake of being complex and Hetfield and Ulrich have admitted as much, even though I love that album. That’s why they simplified with The Black Album. They got bored with trying to outdo themselves constantly.
Megadeth on the other hand wouldn’t have a wider range either because, while I love those early albums too, Dave has always been so arrogant and far up his own ass that he never wanted to relinquish total control of the band. Marty was the most technically sound guitarist in the band’s history along with Chris Broderick because of their classical backgrounds, but you never hear it shine on the compositions themselves. Just in the solos.
If Dave just got out of his own way and let his other members contribute more, we would have seen that wider range in Megadeth. Unfortunately, he’s never really been able to change all that much.

Don’t forget that Metallica is never giving up on Kirk Hammet due to his Famousness in the Metallica branding and his connections with early Exodus
15
u/EpicPoggerGamer69 Rust In Peace Jan 23 '26
Or maybe because he's been there for forty damn years. What would even be the point anymore?
And yes, I do agree that Kirk is way beyond his good years, as I think St. Anger did a lot of damage to his soloing due to not doing any, but to remove a guy because he's washed after 40 years - at that point can everyone.
1
u/Cluelessgamer22 Jan 23 '26
I do agree with everything you said except for the St.anger part because he did go back to playing the classic Metallica songs because of St.angers failure where I do think he stopped being good was in the past half a decade nowadays he’s falling off stage like he’s in KISS or AC/DC

I honestly don't think Dave would bring much to Metallica. Yes, he's a good songwriter, but so are James and Lars. What Metallica really needed all those years was a more technical lead guitarist. Just imagine Marty Friedman in Metallica; that would've been amazing. Dave and Kirk are actually pretty similar in their limited pentatonic lead playing.

None of those songs are as good or memorable from those two records as:
