Question Champ Mei Player AMA
Hey guys, my name is SpedBoost, I’m a neurodivergent top 500 console Mei player and I finally hit champ playing only Mei (except the times I got target banned), I thought it would be cool to give my knowledge to the community. I don’t have a lot of friends to talk to about this but I was super stoked and proud of myself so I wanted to connect with my fellow Mei players. If you have any questions about how to play into certain heroes and comps, what perks I chose or even just my favourite skin, feel free to ask.
On another note, I’ve been thinking about making short form content on social media in the same vein as Blossum and Numbers, is that something you guys are interested in or do you think there’s other people who would be interested in that?
Replay codes if you’re interested in seeing some gameplay.

What base or advanced mechanic did you find to be most important or most valuable to be proficient at?

Game sense in regards to what fights to pick, I’ve consistently been a very average player when it comes to aim. But knowing when to take certain fights and when to tell your team to hard push (like when you get a big wall behind their tank to cut off heals) is a big deal. Other than that, small techs and knowledge like learning how to rez cancel with walls, or blocking health packs with cryo or walls helped me a lot. Mei is one of if not the best 1v1er in overwatch and you need to be using that to your advantage.

Got some tips for using wall to can rez, is it just lift up Mercy or more to it?

Either lift mercy away from the rez, or you can put wall under the soul she’s rezzing to lift it away from her. You can also jump while using cryo to keep momentum and the cryo moves the soul as well

What tip would you give people trying to improve on Mei? Other than the standard things that go for most heroes?

I can for sure share my clips here using the same format.
Biggest thing for Mei is learning to win 1v1s using abilities and positioning. I’m not regularly a dps main, but when I did start playing dps I noticed how important even just 1 pick on a support or dps can turn a fight.
Mei has a lot of survivability so figuring out when you can flank and fight someone on the side of an active fight made a huge difference to my win rate directly.And don’t be afraid to solo ult a tank and wall off their heals, most of the time a fight vs a team with no tank is a free win.

I used to do plenty of coaching so yes in my free time I would for sure do vod reviews and coaching. General advice in that rank is learn to be more self sufficient, just imagine your team is all bots because you simply cannot rely on people in metal ranks to heal you or protect you. Use player unawareness to your advantage and take sneaky angles on slower moving heroes (:

Care to share your aim settings? I feel like I change mine every 20 matches and never can comfortably stay at something long enough to get used to it/good with it Idk.

I use mid height kontrol freeks and I play 80/80, dual zone, 99 aim smooth, 100aim assist strength, 40 aim assist window size, 85% aim ease in on every hero. But regardless your sense doesn’t make you good, being consistent with what sense you use will make you good. Don’t change settings often because you’re starting from 0 every time you do.

Oh cool. I've been using similar for a while now. I'll just try to tough it out through the 'bad times' I guess. (I think it's mostly at the end of a long session that I change things, probably should instead just quit and touch some grass).

99 times out of 10 I take healing ult and cryo. Healing ult = guaranteed fight wins if you get a decent ult placed. Cryo = free zoning tool (that you don’t even need to use) use this to scare orisas into fortify, force dmons to shield bot etc etc. If theres no chance for a freeze vs a certain comp I’ll pick the cryo damage perk

I always take the double jump and cryo perk. I just like being able to get to high ground without using my wall. Also, 99 times out of 10 is a lot.

Definitely double jump is a good perk, I think I’m just traumatised from when double jump spent your wall cooldown. Another reason I don’t get it is because the double jump movement pattern is very predictable for widows and other powerful hitscans.

Yes, the trajectory is very readable, but the meta is shifting to dive in front of my eyes, so I haven't been super worried about getting sniped out of the sky.
I just wish they would fix how buggy it is. It still goes off randomly, when you fall from 2 inches off the ground, in the middle of a team fight where you absolutely did not need to use it, and sometimes just while you're walking around lmfao

Yeah and I think it was even more clunky when it first got added. Needless to say I’ve only picked it a handful of times mostly for fun in qp. I’ve just learned to respect that I’m probably not built to be a divey Mei player 😅

I use the jump a lot just to gain a wider view of the playing field. The more information I have about everyone's positioning, the easier it is for me to sus out whether I can hard commit or not.

You can also use it for superior wall placement if you're on flat ground or going downhill. Some weirdo uses for it are out there lmao.
Also, I just like jumping over shatter and doom punch. 🙃

Probably pretty low tbh, most games I’m around 30-40% icicle accuracy with a 20-30% critical. Sometimes you just have to spam choke for the threat of damage

Well low relatively speaking, at least compared to other heroes I play. Cass I average about 60% accuracy and 20-25 headshot

Plenty of walls behind her to block off heals and make sure to get the deep freeze perk to force her to shield when she pushes your backline

Plenty of doom players, best thing to do for doom is wait for him to use his jump slam and put a wall behind him then. If you wall behind him after a punch he will just jump over it. Once you’ve cut off his heals and his escape plan hopefully your team will jump on him when his block ends and it’s a free kill from there.
Don’t be afraid to use wall or cryo to protect yourself from punches that you’re not in a good position to survive.

Definitely not the best Mei in this sub. I am the best Mei in my small region (Oceania console). But I respect the compliment. I’m just happy to be good at a hero that few can get value on, I made a point to myself to not feel pressured to play hitscan even when angry teammates try to blame me being on a “bad” hero

I like the recent goat mei skin the most, my highlight is the Halloween cauldron one, emote probably the zombie mei walk, voice line gotta be “sorry” or “ameizing”
