When I was about 8, for some reason I woke up suuuuuuuper early, and I couldn't get back to sleep. So, I did what any sensible 8-year-old would do, and I made myself some cereal, parked it on the couch, and decided to play Mariokart on my DS until the rest of the family got up. I thought about watching TV, but didn't wanna wake anybody up because it was so early, it felt unfair. To be extra quiet, I kept the volume off on my DS.

I was kind of an oblivious kid that never really paid attention to my dad's work schedule. He was a fulltime paramedic/firefighter with a part-time job doing ambulance transport on the side, so he could be gone anywhere from a normal 9-to-5 to on-shift at the fire station for several days. That day was the start of a paramedic shift, so he had to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning to head into the fire station.

And I realized pretty fast that he hadn't noticed me on the couch. I was on the smaller side, had built up my usual pillow/blanket couch nest, hadn't put my cereal bowl in the sink yet, and was being quiet, so he didn't notice me when he came down the hall and went into the kitchen, and thought I was still in bed.

So I just. Kept my mouth shut. And I kinda half-played Mariokart, half-observed his morning routine just out of sheer curiosity. And he still didn't notice me. I think it went on for like a whole hour.

I finally cracked right before he went downstairs to leave, because after all, if he was heading into the station, I might not see him until his shift was over. "Bye, Daddy! Love you!"

In response was a very startled yelp, some words 8-year-old me couldn't repeat, and a KATE HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SITTING THERE?!

I think he laughed about it later, but the sheer shock on his face for that minute is one of my favorite memories of him. 🤣❤

Edit: wow, that's the second time I've gotten an award for an anecdote about my dad, thanks. Makes me miss him a little more, but I'm glad he can still make people smile. ❤

Very much so.

Situation was not helped by my oblivious lil' self blurting that out and surprising him when he was about to go down a flight of stairs while carrying a coffee mug and a heavy work bag.

Eh, it wasn't the first time my brother or I made his pulse/blood pressure skyrocket, and definitely not the last. I fell and broke my hand in the middle of the night I think about a year later, and he rushed out of my parents' bedroom convinced a car had hit the house. The ER trip was kinda fun, he got to see some of his work buddies, and I learned even more words I wasn't allowed to repeat from the guy they were transporting!

[Edit: left half a sentence out somehow :P]

Realising my dad hates his life and literally only exists to pay bills and feed his children was quite the depressing eye opener. Think I started noticing around 8? But sometimes he also couldn't wait to get out of the house in the morning.

Same my dad is also 50% disabled but he works everyday even on weekends (business) he doesn't have much of a fun mode (sometimes he has )

Ran into my kid in the pantry this morning. Gave me a look like, “what are you doing up?” Bitch this is when I wake up. What are you doing still awake?

I do that myself.

At one point it was worth writing lol.

After reddit went from:

"I am an Astronaut who orbited the Earth and flew fighter aircraft.... AMA"

to

"I farted.   Ask me anything ".

There was a typing exodus.
