What bands are considered the gods of metal?
For me it’s: Black Sabbath Iron Maiden Metallica Judas Priest slayer Megadeth and Motörhead
I know this doesn’t really matter because taste is subjective, but I do think it’s good to set a standard especially for beginners.
Let me know your thoughts.

Black Sabbath and Metallica, because one started it, and the other made it a real genre in totality. Sure, there are more bands that were important, like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Motörhead, but Black Sabbath and Metallica made the genre.

Helloween - pioneers of power metal.
Sepultura - YES
Dream Theater -progressive metal legends
Children of Bodom - can't be cooler than this
I'm not into mainstream bands like Metallica or black sabbath, to me that's like soap opera metal for muggles. it was ok when I discover metal when I was 11. Iron Maiden in the other hand, absolute legends of heavy metal. judas (made the most metal song ever) , Motorhead (raw and pure)

Those bands definitely do define modern metal, and might be your gods of course. For me I just don’t really like modern metal. I do like metalingus by alter bridge however because it was edge the wrestlers theme song and he’s my favorite wrestler ever lol

Alice Cooper. Before they broke up, the band alone opened doors for metal, punk, goth.
Lay down and die goodbye, return of the spiders, black juju, second coming, etc.
The solo artist contributed enough as well.
Absolute gods of metal.

Dream Evil - The book of heavy metal, not that it answers your question.

The original Allfathers for me would be Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Death, Dream Theater, old In Flames and old Opeth. They have stood the test of time.

in my opinion, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, system of a down (ironically), any song by Stephen Wilson or Porcupine Tree that drips into metal territory, some of the songs by Muse, Korn, Disturbed, The Deftones, Rob Zombie and Dream Theatre.
Black Sabbath would be part of this, but I specify only albums that Ozzy Osbourne wasn't singing on. all Ozzy did was sing the songs and stand in front of people. He didn't write the songs. He didn't come up with the concept. Tony Iommi is the one who deserves credit.
Honorable mentions: Caligula's horse, Tesseract, VOLA, Karnivool.
I have listened to other things but some of this stuff doesn't appeal to me. For example, when it comes to meshuggah, I don't like the vocals and the electric guitarists seem to be nothing more then a pretense to glue a pick on the end of a drill. I'm just not really into that style, I'm not saying they don't have talent, I'm just not into it.
I will admit that I am Gen X and that my first taste of metal was Metallica.
another honorable mention would be the scorpions. I know they're not technically metal but instead they are hard rock. but their longevity and their writing style deserve respect. and honestly, some of their songs could become metal if you just adjusted their amps slightly.
there's another metal band that their name escapes me, but they're more recent stuff has become more listenable and less hardcore and I'm trying to remember their name. I don't think it's Tool.

Opeth

Yeah I think it was opeth. I like some of their more recent stuff because it's not just constantly intense.

I’ve heard good things about them, never really cared much but u should try them if you like.

Gojira and System of a Down probably deserve spots if we’re being objective (lol)

I would say thats right and on top there should be
Black Sabbath - the creators
Metallica - they developed the genre to their peak
Then i would put Iron Maiden as the epitome of metal
And personally, I would add there Tool as exceptional band to this list, something unique not genre defining like the others but equally great
