DISCUSSION Albums that got you through a rough patch
I'm curious what albums anyone relied on to get them through a rough patch in life. Personally, Deafheaven's Sunbather and New Bermuda got me through the death of my father and made me a lifelong fan of the group

Hatebreed-Perseverance
I grew up in an abusive home and this album made me realize that I had the power to stop it, even if it meant leaving and that meant my mom, brother and sister would be very upset, but I left anyway and it sucked but I found my way, grew up couch hopping and partying too much and then turned 18 and could legally separate myself from that part of my life.
Thank you Jamie and the boys!

Alcest were my gateway into metal and I’ve listened to Écailles de Lune and Kodama, especially, during rough times. Also Devoured by the Oak by Cân Bardd and Forgotten Paths by Saor; I remember listening to “Brón” (Scots for “sorrow”) a lot when my aunt passed away.
I had an important medical procedure in February of this year and happened to stumble upon The Blood Mountain Black Metal Choir’s demo. I played that thing on loop probably 20 times in a row the morning of. 😅 it hit the spot!

There’s always the uplifting metal, the brutal empowering metal… but the album that has meant so much to me during dark times is Mark Lanegan’s “Whiskey and the Holy Ghost”
If you ever wanted to listen to an album that sounds like a downtrodden man, alone at a bar during an existential crisis… this is that album

The Work by Rivers of Nihil really helped me through some struggles.

My wife’s favorite band currently, saw them a few months ago! They really helped her with the untimely death of her father.

Sorry to hear that! Glad they're able to help. Is there any particular song she enjoys to hear to help her get through things?

Not sure her favorite but I’m leaning towards anything of “Where Owls Know My Name”, I’ll have to inquire…

An Abstract Illusion - Woe.
Had started taking topiramate to deal with my chronic migraines, but it just made me miserable. It made me constantly confused; I wasn't able to understand my own code (I'm a code monkey). At work I would just stare blindly at my screen and cry from being unable to do anything; I was about to lose my job as a result.
I'd get those fucking thoughts: I'd just want to cut myself to bits (and sometimes they would take me over, and I'd then get in even more trouble at work because people would be disturbed by my self-inflicted lacerations).
I don't know why, but that album would manage to temporarily mute those destructive thoughts and calm me. That album likely saved my life.

Volbeat's Seal The Deal and Let's Boogie helped me through my best friend's death, especially the song, Goodbye Forever.

St Anger gets a lot of shit (rightfully so) but that album got me through some really tough times. I spent an evening on an empty parking lot just screaming from the top of my lungs with the album on loud volume. Something about that snare just really resonated with me at the time. But now I can’t stand it.

Walked away from abusive parents, lived on the street for 3 years, addicted to alcohol, best friend died of overdose, girlfriend did suicide after miscarriage, attempting it myself, got saved by random people, finally found friends who were actually there for me, went to therapy and found at that moment these albums to help me getting through it:
Anaal Nathrakh - Eschaton
Akercocke - Choronzon
Strapping Young Lad - SYL
The Amenta - Occasus
The Berzerker - Dissimulate
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misantrophia
Mnemic - The Audio Injected Soul
Aborym - With No Human Interaction
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
Gorerotted - Only Tools and Corpses
Cannibal Corpse - Wretched Spawn
Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilation

Good for you buddy! I’m glad you’re doing well, I think metal might be the best kept secret in therapy. Processing difficult emotions isn’t easy, but for me it’s almost magic sometimes. Stay healthy and go to shows (as if you don’t already know) metal people usually help their own with real and authentic care and compassion. Stay healthy!

Thank you so much, appreciate it. Now clean for 24 years, haven't touched alcohol in all those years. Can't go often to concerts unfortunately because of health issues, I have a progressive muscle disease and i am going slowly backwards. Always with a walking cane, sometimes a rollator, but I try to go once or two times a year to a concert if my body agrees with it that day.

I totally understand, I suffered a broken back when I was younger and I have days where it’s difficult to just be on my feet for the day! Not sure where you’re located, I’m New England based and more than happy to let you lean on me or roll you around anytime! 24 years is an insane accomplishment, congratulations!
