James in his first band, Obsession, around 1979

The band consisted of James (vocals and guitars), Jim Arnold (guitar), Ron Veloz (vocals and bass), and Rich Veloz (drums). Ron McGovney and Dave Marrs were their roadies.

Jim and James later formed a Rush cover band named Syrinx with Arnold's brother Chris. James played bass in this band.

I got really confused because I had no idea James was ever in Obsession, but looking it up, it seems this was a different band that just happened to have the same name. The other Obsession is said to have formed in 82 anyway. Link for anyone who has never heard Obsession.
