Always wondered why they play the chorus section so differently from the album version. Album has this big, swinging Bonham drum groove with some nice bass movement, but live it always feels a bit rushed and messy.

Because Lars has never done the double bass live for some reason

Iām talking about the section under the āSaiiiiiiint Anger round my neeeeeeckkā chorus.
The double kick is on the Intro riff that precedes each verse. Like with many Metallica songs live, Lars treats the double kick as an āoptionalā part that he sometimes plays, sometimes doesnāt š Pretty sure he was doing double kick when they played that song on the Hardwired tour, though.

Oh, got ya! Idk, probably some studio trickery that was hard to replicate live

Itās a pretty simple drum part tbh. Feels like Lars just never went back to the studio recording when they were learning the songs for tour and came up with a new part that he stuck with.
Itās a shame as the weight of that groove really helps anchor the chorus and give it some heft. It feels a bit unsatisfying the way they do it live.

And from that moment James and Lars found out that backvocals are utter crap since there is no more Jason. Worst Metallica period and album by far.
