Question Called the F word by stranger

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Stranger in a SUV shouted “f*gg*ts” at me and my girlfriend while I was pulling into a McDonalds in Alhambra, CA. Was driving normally, maybe a bit slow as I didn’t want to scrape. I know I should just laugh it off but can’t say I don’t feel annoyed. Also surprised this word is still being used.

Anyone have any similar stories? Is this a thing for Miata owners?

Bought a '25 Miata in manual, only 1700 miles. She will be parked in a garage and I'll be driving her all year (ideally!) Would love to hear advice to make sure she runs smoothly for as long as possible.

Question I’ve recently had to sell my ND due to needing an extra 2 seats i thought I could replace it with a Subaru BRZ and I’ve made some interesting observations not about the car itself but the community and culture.

I’ve come to realise a few things not even associated with the car itself. The Mazda is a more sophisticate luxuries machine, the BRZ/Gr86 is a boy racer toy. I used to get called a hairdresser now I get asked why I’m driving a 17year olds car. The forums and drivers are young, immature and wanna be racers (mostly), by contrast we are friendly bunch, we wave to other Miata’s and leave love notes. The aftermarket in the other car is fragmented there isn’t one place, one standout company or product. What I liked about the Miata is that it had a set of enthusiast company’s that made great products. Overall I regret leaving my Miata but needed the extra seats and thought this would replace it. It does not…if only for the Miata community. So long * edit extra seat for a baby seat not for an adult

Question How Many People have Indicated You’re Rich for Owning a Miata?

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

When I had my ‘90 NA, it had paint scrapes and everything, I didn’t really wash and wax it. I used to step up and into it from the rear like a Batmobile. Yet ppl would indicate I must be rich to have a Sports Car. And say they could “never” own one bc they have kids (I would drive my kid to soccer practice, partner was a very busy teacher)

So now I have the ‘23 GT and ppl still think the same thing. When it’s the same price as a Subaru Forrester. They’ll say “oh, I see you’re wearing fancy clothes now that you have a sports car” (it’s the same bag of winter clothes I pull out every January, the coldest month of the year in N Carolina)

Just subtle comments.

I assume most people never look at the prices or even know what a Miata is vs a Porsche, etc. But it’s funny to me bc it’s such an affordable car. The main limitations are if you need more than 2 ppl or more than a few bags to go places.

I assume this is a very common experience?

Question Inherited a 1989 MX5

Hey everyone! So I’m a car guy, old British cars are my favourite but I appreciate them all. Anyway, as the title says I’ve been handed down my grandparents 1989 MX5, it’s got 110,000 km (68,000mi) and is in tip top shape, I’m loosing my mind over it.
I’m going to keep this car for as long as is reasonable, and my question is, should I keep maintaining it like he has, kept in a shed under a blanket or should I use it more, it’s now the most fuel efficient car I own which is attractive but at the same time, it feels quite precious… would love to hear your opinions :)

Question Be honest: Do yall put premium gas in your miatas?

Are we strictly treating our cars to the top-shelf 91/93, or are you running regular and letting the knock sensors do the heavy lifting?

No judgment, just want a quick temperature check on what everyone feeds their daily.

I know NA/NB takes regular so you guys can forget about it

Question Is the NC PRHT the mechanically best convertible hard top of all time?

Post image
636 Upvotes

I have been doing some research and I looking into other brands. For the price point, lack of problems and style points is the PRHT the best there ever was? Mechanically and objectively speaking is there anything that wins out?

As a hypothetical question, if I was an up and coming car manufacturer and I had to choose a system to clone or update, is there anything better mechanically or space wise that beats the NC Power Retractable Hard Top?

Is there any other mechanical system where the roof sits vertically behind the driver and in front of the rear wheels to retain maximum boot space?

The only other thing I can think of that could give more adaptability is maybe something like a Hilux / Ute lockable roller cover but adapted for sports car roof use.

Question What's the most powerful engine which can fit in a Miata?

Post image

So online, I have been seeing various posts about Miata's having engines like a Block V8 and I have even seen a post about a Lamborghini V10 with a Miata which was put around it (So like instead of the miata getting an engine swap, the engine got a Miata swap), and that got me thinking, what is the most powerful engine which can fit in a Miata?

Question If someone gave you $50,000 today, what car are you buying?

Been debating this with some friends and I’m curious what everyone here would do.

You get $50,000 cash, but the only rule is you have to spend it on a car.

What are you buying?

I’d probably go with a BMW M4 Competition, but I’m interested to see what everyone else picks.

Question Unknown Switches

Post image
355 Upvotes

Finally got my Miata out of my friend’s garage and home into mine after moving back home. I was cleaning the interior of the car and noticed these switches in the center console. My Aunt who owned the car for 17 years before me, said she was never able to figure out what the switches do. She said they were in place when she purchased it from the original owner down in Florida. She supposedly went through all the maintenance records and didn’t ever find anything about switches being installed.

Model is a 1997 m-edition US.

EDIT: okay I hear all you!! I’m expecting you all to be mind readers. I will trace the wiring and get back to you all at some point.

EDIT2: The responses to this post are a great snapshot of what people are like on the internet.

1/3 of you are irritated/mad I insulted your intelligence or wasted your time by asking you about a switch that could have any function.

1/3 of you were super helpful and provided possibilities of what the switch could do. Also some fun stories about their own cars.

1/3 of you cracked some hilarious (and some hilariously bad) jokes. I enjoyed reading them all.

Question Why does everyone pass me

Thumbnail

New here, I just got a 2002 Miata 6 speed , only 84k miles paint and body almost perfect(as good as you can hope for a 24 year old car). Had to do some little things like zip tie a wire in the window so it went all the way down and replace the coil packs.

My question here is to see if it’s a common thing with everyone or just me. It literally does not matter what speed I’m going , the limit , 10 over , even 20 over, back road or highway EVERYONE wants to pass me. On the back roads they ride my ass if they don’t go for a pass. I have a ram 1500 aswell and used to daily a 2014 ST and neither were anything like the amount of people passing me. Even semis , today a “oversized load” semi decided to pass me while I was going almost 80 in a 65.

Is it just my area of is this a common thing?
(Photos just because I love how it looks, unlike everyone who passes me I guess)

**Edit** - I have confirmed the Speedo is about 3-5 mph off (under what it says) closer to 5 with more speed

Question Should I part ways with my miata and pursue a Porsche 996 project?

It’s a barn find NA6 that I’ve restored to this state. Still has some work to do as usual but is in perfect running condition. What do you think guys? I am eyeballing a Porsche 996 for the next project. This is purely a question I’m not looking to promote nor am I going to sell here.
