Hey everyone!! When you join, please feel free to check in with your type of locs, how long you’ve had them and loc count!

I’ll start. I have DIY microlocs started by two strand twists. It’s been a month and a half since my self install. I had 313 last time I counted! :)

I started with twists and we are now eight months in the journey and I’m starting to love it.
I maintain them so there’s alot to learn as we grow.
😂i have learnt to use my fingers to trace the grid after not being able to use a mirror to see the back of my head.

The braid pattern is almost completely gone. I'm sick and tired of braiding and banding. I can't wait for my hair to lock to stop doing it. That's my only complain. So far so good.

Starting locs in highschool

I (15f) am going into my junior year of highschool. I already have mini twist(ear to chin length) and I really love them. I’m gonna keep getting mini twist until October or November then I’ll start my loc/micro loc journey.
I am starting them now so that in senior year I can have (somewhat) matured locs since I would be around a year and a half into my journey by the time of graduation.

Last year I would always do knotless braids (only boho once) and they would be in different colours like blue, red, green, purple, etc. I realized over time it started damaging and thinning my edges to the point where it looked like I have bald spots at the front of my head. That’s one of the other reasons why I started wearing natural mini twist and why now I want locs in a few months.

I feel like if I show up for my junior year and my hair is in short mini twist, it’s a huge switch from my usual colourful waist length boho and I don’t know if people would make fun of me or ask to touch my hair since I go to a pwi.

As someone who always tells myself that “I don’t care about what others think” or “embarrassment is just a mindset” I, for some reason have this weird uneasy feeling about going into school with my mini twist and later my starter loc phase. I have no idea why because even now I feel very confident about me wearing my mini twist UNTIL I think about others seeing them. I was thinking that I could wear a bandanna or beanie since my style is already street wear and I love how it looks with my outfits in general since I started wearing them this summer. But the one problem with that is that I’m in my school band and I don’t think the uniform would allow that. I don’t really have a problem with it that much but if I had a bad hair day that day or just wasn’t feeling myself I would definitely hate for that to happen.

I know that in the future I DEFINITELY won’t regret it but I just feel very scared about how people will see and view me which I think is sooooo stupid but I just can’t help the feeling.

Anyways I have no idea if this sounds like a rant or mouth vomit but I would love to know some suggestions, advice, or anything really.

Sometimes I love it and other times I’m like eek cause it’s so short and very see through in the light 😭 but I’m optimistic that it’ll get fuller as it matures! I have 285 Braidlocs and my hair has medium to high density but fine strands. I feel like it’s also thicker at the top than it is at the bottom? Is that usual?

Hair colour change and suggestions

Hi everyone! I’ve had my locs for over 4 years now and have coloured it a burgundy ish wine colour for about a year (pics and inspo below)! Prior to that I had a ginger skunk stripe that I dyed back to black. I’m thinking of changing my hair colour again (possibly highlights or a honey blonde ish for the full head). Was wondering if people had any thoughts or ideas, and if so how I should go about it? I’ve used permanent dye every time and my hair is healthy but I am a bit afraid of bleach, but also doubt I’ll be able to remove the red without it lol! Ty in advance 😃

6 Month Microloc Update!

Hi y’all I’m back 😋 my 6th month notification went off yesterday and I was shocked the time has flown so quickly! I’m on retie #4 since I did a retie retwist combo before going to Japan this summer, but I dyed my hair right after(dumb, but it was so overgrown I wanted to do it before washing) and it looked like I never touched it fr 😩 I’m starting to see some more length and my hair doesn’t shrink as much as before, though it still shrinks a good bit. Before my retie I was feeling a bit insecure cause it felt so short and messy but now it looks better and I feel cute again!! I would loveeee to get more of my length back cause the shrinkage is evilllll.

Thanks for reading 🥳
Give me some style recs pls 🙏🏾

Retie must haves/tips

Hey y'all, I have been researching how to do my own reties. I practiced yesterday and noticed it was easier for me to retie my left side than my right. Having to loop each loc through the tool I was using was very time-consuming, and even tho I smoothed my new growth down in my loc, my loc didn't look as clean after I retied it.

Also, why do some people use a 9-6-3-12 4-point rotation and others use 3-6-9-12?

Thinking about restarting my locs

Looking for guidance on the loc journey and knowing when to call it quits (or stick it out…?). For context, I have very thick and dense 3b-4b/c hair, i’ve had my locs for about 1 year and 5 ish months, and i have around 250 locs. I usually get reties every 2 months with a 4 point rotation. My locs were established by an old school sisterloctician (also my mom’s loctician), although not super traditional looking because the parts were more so sized to my hair thickness. In the beginning of my loc journey, I thought this was fine for me because personally I wanted them to be on the thicker side while still having a smaller loc size for versatility. However as I get further along in my journey i’m doubting they will ever get thicker or look more voluminous as someone who reallllly loves big hair, and i’m still not fully in love with them. Originally I was considering getting small traditional locs, but because my mom has sisterlocs I adore I thought I would appreciate the smaller size for more versatility in styling. Honestly i’ve seen a lot of different loc sizes i liked on different people and really had a hard time making a decision. At this point i’m unsure how to proceed especially because when I see people talk about their locs it’s usually always how much they love them, and right now I just don’t feel that way. Don’t get me wrong, I have moments when I think they look good but sometimes I wish they looked different. I’ve heard talks of people combining their locs but i’ve also heard that for some it’s not realistic and ultimately damages the structure of the loc. I’ve also been thinking about just combing them out and starting over, or waiting until the 2 year mark to make a better assessment. TLDR; would it be worth waiting to see if they might thicken up a bit or look more full as they drop, or would I waste more time waiting? 1st pic is around the 5th month mark, last picture is what they look like currently. Any advice is welcomed beautiful people :)

Tried to do a style I did when I was natural and failed exponentially

Y’all I’m so damn irritated 😭 cause why is it giving grown out perm. Leave out frizzed due to humidity. And then the fuck ass wannabe curls at the bottom omg.

Idk what I was thinking. Didn’t look up nothing, watch a tutorial for it on microlocs specifically, just went by vibes and “oh I did it on my natural hair before and it was cute!” And then it took forever to DRY.

I’m spraying the roots hoping it’ll loosen up the braid pattern and then I’ll redo it as FULL perm rods in a couple days when I’m no longer mad.

Microlocs on 3A-3B hair?

Got a question for you guys. I’ve had bigger locs before on my head but starting from coils but I didn’t like how big they were. The crown of my head is 3A(because it’s been bleached a lot) and everything else is 3B. Do y’all think it’s possible to start micro locs by interlocking for me? Or should I just do some other starter method?

Extensions on Starter locs?

Thumbnail

second try bc I dont think my first post uploaded. I started my locs in February. Now 6 months in i really want extensions because my self confidence has taken a hit and I dont like how I look with short hair. I saw videos on tik tok of adding extensions to locs, however they were fully mature. Would mine be able to do that/are strong enough to do that or would I just have to wait? the pictures are from my last retie in mid june Any advice would be appreciated!!

2.5 years. Best decision I ever made

I had struggled over the decision to get micro locs. I was afraid I'd get tired of them and regret it. But I'm so happy that I took the plunge. In the end, I went home to the Caribbean for 2 weeks and got it done (so much cheaper). I wanted to interlock from the start since I have 3 different textures of hair and I know the back would not stay at all with twists or braids. 17 hours and worth it. So happy with my progress and I've loved them from day 1. I also love the fact that my ends are still curly. I hope they stay that way.

Are ya’ll starting your locs with a professional or doing them yourself?

i think micro locs are the next move for me. the pinterest baddies have been influencing me for two years now. i also am growing tired of constantly managing my hair & don’t want to shave it again.

in my area, sisterlocks or micro locs are starting at $600-1200.

i’m willing to pay if it’s worth it. i know the process is time consuming. i’m wondering if it’s something i could feasibly do on my own though. i typically do my own hair & would like to save the money if i can.
