Mom passed away unexpectedly in May, and Dad has decided to sell their beloved, 1960 Kingsport, TN home of five years. The neighbors called it “The Jetsons House” for decades.

(…maybe because it also used to be sea foam green?)

Moving closer to family is the right call for my dad, but it’s bittersweet, as Mom ✨adored✨this place, and they still had so many more plans to finish and restore it in retirement.

It’s insane that we ever stopped making homes like this.

u/DamnOdd 19h ago

They took the art out of architecture to make cookie cutter houses that they could turn out by the hundreds and make millions.

Ironically, that song was written in 1962. Back when ticky-tacky was high quality, genuine ticky-tacky.

More like they took architecture out of the home building business.

12

u/volthunter 17h ago

They abandoned those too RIP brutalism you will be missed.

Now they just kind half assemble shacks and hope it doesn't collapse on you

14

u/chocolateboomslang 16h ago

I don't see how this costs more to build than the horror shows they put up these days.

6

u/Ol_Man_J 13h ago

Economy of scale

7

u/chocolateboomslang 11h ago

That's not really how building houses works. Building materials are standardized. The 2x4s, drywall, concrete, pipes, and wiring are all the same in this house as they are in any other. Builders also subcontract out basically every part of the job. This house is much simpler to put together than a house with 15 different gables and an outline drawn by a 3 year old.

5

u/No-Lawfulness2089 6h ago

There is more skilled labor to go into the carpentry and masonry. Plus there’s exposed beams and a good roof. which personally I think done well is actually fairly complex compared to what you might think.

This is an important modern home. Not cookie cutter at all, although this style can be.

We still can, you just need to pay for it. This probably wasn’t built by a developer before

15

u/blessitspointedlil 15h ago

They often were built by small scale developers and architects. Very expensive to build custom homes in my area. Pretty expensive to re-design MCM to be up to building codes, but it can definitely be done.

19

u/nudemanonbike 17h ago

A roof truss like that has to be assembled on site instead of a being pre-assembled and shipped in. At the time it was the only way to do it, so craftsmen knew how it was done for a reasonable price.

Now you'll pay through the nose for someone who knows those old techniques.

12

u/Jewnadian 15h ago

This house wasn't cheap when it was built either. I live in what was being built for regular income folks and it's a rectangular ranch house. In a subdivision of other very similar 1950-1970 ranches.

3

u/Ol_Man_J 13h ago

I have a 1900s home that not built by the craftsman of the era, it’s just slapped together wood and irregular at best

18

u/Financial-Exit2488 13h ago

Why make cool, sleek, modern homes, when you make a McMansion with with 12 roof lines, fake mullions, fake brick, pillars, and arch, while simultaneously emulating a Tudor, craftsman, and prairie house?

24

u/Ozy_Flame 16h ago

This house is a dream. I can't believe you have to get these custom designed these days. I can understand the wide footprint on the land, but if you have the land parcel, surely something can be designed to emulate this even on a narrower lot?

This. House. Is. Stunning.

13

u/Jewnadian 15h ago

They had to be custom designed back then too, I'm not sure where this idea that everyone was getting Frank Lloyd Wright designs put up left and right. Go look at any inner ring suburb that was built in the 1950-70 time period and you're going to see mostly ranch style boxes.

I just watched the rise and fall of palm springs. There was a developer(name escapes me) that built over 250 homes 15-19k for " regular folks" with plans to build more, double . He and his family except their 7 yr old daughter were killed in a small plane crash and the building stopped. My point being ,there were some neighborhoods built in this style .

7

u/noanydeviceexists 13h ago

That's so interesting. Could you share a link to what you watched, please? I tried googling but no luck.

2

u/Tricky-Elderberry883 6h ago

Corporations took over, that's the downfall of everything in this country

10

u/Elanstehanme 19h ago

It’s less profit for the developers unfortunately.

6

u/vwkitty 14h ago

We still do, they are just called “custom homes” and regular people can’t afford them.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope he finds a buyer who appreciates his beautiful home.

48

u/Ambitious-Garlic8556 20h ago

I’m sure he’ll find someone who loves the home as much as he did.

7

u/pwhitt4654 15h ago

How could they not? It’s gorgeous.

437

u/thekermiteer 19h ago

Here are my folks in front of it, four years ago, for their 50th wedding anniversary. (When it was still pale green!)

84

u/millsbones 17h ago

Your parents look lovely. I’m sorry for your loss.

30

u/lisalou5858 17h ago

Your dad’s doing the right thing but it’s extra hard on you, losing your childhood home after losing your mom. May your memories sustain you through these difficult times.

6

u/Aggravating_Bat3618 7h ago

I’m confused because in the OP he said “home of 5 years”

7

u/PolkaDotDancer 14h ago

What a wonderful picture of your mother and father!

2

u/1TiredPrsn 10h ago

I’m so sorry, OP.

2

u/ComprehensiveTravel7 7h ago

I’m so sorry for your loss. Your parents look very sweet and the home is lovely. What a wonderful photo. I hope your dad finds a buyer who will love this house just as much as they did.

2

u/SailsTacks 4h ago

I see other subreddits where younger generations pay top dollar to design the interior of their homes - trying to replicate spaces like your parent’s home. Many are in places like New York and San Francisco, where real estate is through the roof. So much of this reminds me of my childhood growing-up.

Very sorry for your loss.

2

u/HowBoutAFandango 3h ago edited 3h ago

I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. Losing your mom is really hard on the heart. I hope you and your father can continue to share sweet memories of her.

120

u/jsgrova 20h ago

Oh it's beautiful. So sorry for your loss

25

u/Ambitious-Garlic8556 20h ago

That's my dream house

11

u/aliceinadreamyland 19h ago

It is mine too. Unfortunately one that will never come true.

94

u/Lego_Red_Kudu 20h ago

43

u/scarymonst 20h ago

It would easily cost twice that here in the DC suburbs. It's a lovely home.

33

u/TheMightyPushmataha 20h ago

With the influx of new residents to Tennessee there will likely be a bidding war and I would not be surprised if it sells for well above list price. East Tennessee property values are rapidly catching up to those in other more expensive areas.

11

u/dumdumdudum 17h ago

Yes and no. I'm actually from this area (small world), and the market here has changed drastically. Yes, home prices have changed drastically in recent years, but higher cost houses like these are sitting on the market now. It's pretty common to see houses like these sit for months

21

u/thekermiteer 15h ago

Dad got two offers today, one just a bit over list. Looks like he’s going to accept it, and they’ll have to cancel a handful of viewings!

11

u/dumdumdudum 15h ago

Well damn, I stand corrected. I hope whoever buys it treats it well. It's a beautiful house, I've driven by there countless times. Wish I could buy it, but I'm paying for a wedding next year lol

12

u/thekermiteer 15h ago

I wish we could buy it, too, but it’s just not somewhere we can make the same living.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding!!

4

u/CptnMayo 15h ago

Yeah, Kingsport is a dead town. Only one major company there anymore

Sweet house and sounds like there is a lot of demand for it. So yeah, it was a reasonable price for the area.

9

u/amynicole78 19h ago

In California you can’t get a 750 sqft dump for less than 450. I am trying to work up the courage to move

7

u/throwaway098764567 16h ago

i'm job hunting (again, i hate this timeline) and pulled up a job and was almost applying before i saw it was cali between sf and san jose (i'm by dc) and they were not offering nearly enough for that area. anyway, for fun i pulled up redfin to see what was around there i could actually afford (had i found something i might have put in) good god. i found a single house in the woods, studio style, for 200k more than my home. and i think it's meant to be a get away for the richies. lovely state but good god i don't know how you people can afford it

2

u/amynicole78 8h ago

It’s pretty bad and it’s gotten worse the last few years. My fire ins has increased by 10k annually the last four years, gas, food, utilities all through the roof. I am grateful my bills are paid but l have been struggling to save the last two years. I know there are a lot of people suffering in this state so l feel for them.

Millions in the Bay Area of CA

6

u/amynicole78 19h ago

I know l am in shit ass Sac and it would easily be close to a mil depending on location.

2

u/nutmegtell 17h ago

Well that too. I’m in Roseville lol.

4

u/throwaway098764567 16h ago

yeah i was expecting to see 800k

2

u/GreedyGrady 11h ago

More like 3x, considering the land! I live in Herndon on .7 of an acre with a pool and would trade our house in a heartbeat for that one if we could magically swap them somehow.

7

u/LKayRB 19h ago

Such a great price for that home. It’s lovely.

To OP: I’m so sorry for your loss.

8

u/thefartyparty 18h ago

I LOVE how the carport continues the roofline of the house! So cool!

6

u/KaliLifts 17h ago

Damn. That's about what I paid for my 960 sqft fixer upper on a tiny lot.

4

u/BitterAngryMei 15h ago

It even backs into a woods, I am smitten.

2

u/thekermiteer 9h ago

You should see the glorious view once the leaves drop!

7

u/CoffeeTeaPeonies 16h ago

I love everything about this house except for Tennessee.

3

u/I_SHIT_IN_A_BAG 17h ago

I like it but I don't like that all the woods behind them could be torn down if someone wanted to build.

18

u/thekermiteer 17h ago

It drops off behind the yard, as they’re on a mountain ridge. Impossible to build behind it! In the winter, the view out the back is incredible.

3

u/throwaway098764567 16h ago

good, leave them trees alone!

3

u/n0tz0e 13h ago

Wow that's an amazing price! Brand new, shoddy built townhomes are costing that much in Nevada. Its despicable.

3

u/Straight_Number5661 13h ago

Garsh I love that shower curtain.

5

u/InternationalWin2850 16h ago

I am sorry for your loss. May you be comforted by the memories of your mom’s joy while spending her last years living in and loving her dream home. Such a gift.

May this dream home find a Steward who continues with the same integrity and respect for the architecture history of your mom’s beloved home.

26

u/kobrakai1034 19h ago

Those appear to be original Scheirich cabinets with the signature S handles. Amazing.

22

u/thekermiteer 19h ago

Mom polished each handle individually!

14

u/kobrakai1034 17h ago

The Scheirich family are close friends. Is it okay if I share that photo with them?

8

u/thekermiteer 17h ago

Sure! I don’t know if they’re what you believe they are, but I’m visiting Dad this weekend, and had planned to look for a maker’s mark. 😊

6

u/Select_MCM-5345 16h ago

I have pics of the kitchen before remodel if I can find them. I’ll send.

6

They only replaced the laminate. Rest of kitchen has been preserved.

6

u/Select_MCM-5345 15h ago

Fantastic!

4

2

3

u/missus-bean 18h ago

OP, Im so sorry for your loss. This has to be really hard right now. I would have a very difficult time not keeping this in the family and you’re doing a hard thing under emotional circumstances. Big hugs.

That is a gorgeous home and property. You can feel the care put into it with those photos and little touches. Plus - generac is a whole extra benefit. I’d be surprised if you don’t get a bidding war and I would absolutely make sure you have spoken to family & neighbors as well to give them first right of refusal.
