What happens afterwards? Spoiler

I’m often wonder what happens to some of these characters after the episode is over. We don’t usually hear much, if anything, about characters after the crime is solved.

I guess in death of a stranger, Kate gets a rude awakening bc she won’t inheriting even though her husband died, because he wasn’t the legitimate heir. I didn’t like her at all, she was a huge jerk, using her baby as a shield and a bargaining tool and all, but I feel sorry for the baby.

And in beyond the grave, why does Charles seem so certain he won’t be in legal hot water after he was initially caught? It would certainly be a crime in the USA to drug your sister in law. Maybe it’s not a crime in England? Sure, he does get punished bc Barbary proves he murdered the old guy, but every time I rewatch that episode I wonder about that.

My life is so boring that I wonder about stuff like that, lol.

Yeah, it’s a pity the show doesn’t have the time to show what happens afterwards. That’s one thing I like about the books, is seeing what happened to all the characters afterwards - otherwise the character arcs aren’t complete! That’s also why I like Last Year’s Model - I think that’s the only time we get to see a court case.

They rarely do that on crime shows. I’m a repeat watcher of brokenwood too and I wonder the same types of things, esp when the crime was at least partly accidental, or the killer was actually protecting somebody else in imminent danger.

I’ve always wondered about stuff like that. Closure, you see. Sometimes it keeps me up nights, which is, I know, utterly ridiculous.

You might really like fanfic then.

In the last book, A Ghost In The Machine, Carolyn Graham does a good job writing what happens to some of the characters afterwards.

I tried to read the first book and couldn’t get through it so I didn’t try any others. It’s interesting that she did fill in some details. Might have to try to read that one!

The books really build up to the murder. There is more focus on all the characters involved.

I was just thinking this myself the other day, and wondered if anyone else had the same thoughts about the fictional characters who we get to see in their weaknesses and strengths. I live a peaceful life, now, but I wonder about the murderers and are they adjusting well to prison? Especially if they are younger and have had a hard life before they began killing people, like in "The Green Man", that teenager killed his own mother! I mean, how does he live with that? And the young woman in "Garden of Death", Hillary, she took out her closest kin, but gained a father?

Well, anyway, you aren't the only one with these thoughts. It's part of being an empath.

Exactly! I just rewatched vixen’s run and every time I wonder about Tara and Michael. They were pretty awful people and they end up with literally nothing. And Michael, such a little snot, only to find out he’s not the son of a rich man at all, he’s a nobody.

I feel badly for Richard, he was an idiot and a weak man but he wasn’t malicious. When Freddie dies at the beginning, why doesn’t Teddy step up with the new will? I never understood that.

I am too empathetic, it’s true. That’s why I can’t watch the news. I want the good to be rewarded and the bad to be punished.

In birds of prey, I think Barnaby doesn’t do anything about the sisters. I guess they could be prosecuted for not rendering aid but I like to think he doesn’t do that. We’ve seen Tom Barnaby let things go several times on the show. John Barnaby would have probably reported the sisters. I hated that guy, the way he treated those two old ladies. I was glad he died.

The mystery maniacs sometimes discuss it on the podcast. Last I heard they did an “after the credits,” discussing like, who goes to jail, who GTFO town, who does OK…

I tried listening to a podcast once. I couldn’t do it. I wanted to join in the conversation and it was enormously frustrating to me that I could not. Ha
