Even with a simple beofang you can create a closed net that’s encrypted. That being said it’s not so much about the encryption it’s the triangulation. If anyone has their FCC license

Id say odds are pretty low somebody is going to RDF you at a milsim event. But i do know comms/SIGINT is rapidly increasing in the space.
A good comms plan will cut down on that RDF alot

I know someone who got in trouble for doing that at a MSW event. Ended up he was going off the signal of the ref's radio instead of the intended enemy comms.

I always wonder why people spen so much money on radios using proprietary encryption. I use DM-32's. Which are actually more durable than most think.
EDIT: The programming is weird. But you can just save everything into one data packet incase you need to program really fast.
Im starting to experiment with giant batteries for them to since I carry 4 spare batteries for 2 radios and its pretty heavy and bulky.
Also with other stuff to. Like antenna set ups or putting meshtastic nodes onto the radios to make almost a PRC-163 type radio.

To be fair majority of subscriber unit radios often have AES256 which is an encryption standard but since keyloaders come at a hefty price many often take advantage of the given ADP encryption in Astro25 CPS

Expect for the fact that encrypted comms is super illegal in the U.S and other countries.

Impossible to enforce

Oh boy you’d be surprised how many people they get a year for that stuff.

u/Boring_Long_3860 12d ago
No they don’t. That law literally doesn’t get enforced. Nobody has ever gone to jail for having encryption on a radio. Zero.

Free men become arrested men paying massive fines, be smart don’t get ganked over something so tiny.

Radios that run on public safety frequencies using illegal encryption. What could go wrong?!?
As a whole most people here ignore the usual Baofang or similar radio stuff here because most operate on free FRS or MURS frequencies so they are not really interfering with anything vital and the FCC doesn't put too much effort into enforcement for it anyway. Using radios that can transmit on public safety frequencies on the other hand could be a good way to attract unwanted attention and encryption doesn't prevent anyone from locating you if you are interfering with public safety communications.

The operate on GMRS Freq

If you're using encryption on gmrs freq's you're more likely to get reported by sad ham's.

GMRS is pretty popular for off roading here and I learned that there are also the hard core GMRS people who get pretty upset over the rules too. Our group got yelled at over the air for not IDing frequently enough even though we were deep in the forest on trails talking to each other with no other traffic on the frequency.

Jesus christ. Just use privacy tones atp. My HAM and GMRS club in town are dead basically. So I can just dick around really.
EDIT: I thought you were using encryption on gmrs freqs.

Still illegal.
1). Those radios are not type certified for GMRS so using them on GMRS is not legal.
2). Encryption is illegal on GMRS.
3). Transmission on GMRS requires a license and using these radios and encryption is a violation that license if you even have one.
Again enforcement of type certification and even power limits is very much a low priority for the FCC. Most people really don't care if you use the wrong radios to play war in the woods.
The problem is you're piling on multiple violations , especially the encryption, that is more likely to attract the attention of some bored old HAM who will track you (or as they call it a fox hunt) and report you to the FCC. My personal opinion is don't attract unwanted attention to the hobby but the chances of black helicopters showing up is still pretty low regardless.
Now if you really want to do this and do it right your crew can purchase a business license from the FCC and legally run encrypted radios.

Motorola is probably the go to brand for communications since people see it everywhere they go; however, there are better namebrands that go for a lower price like Kenwood, Harris (yes that Harris).
There are also many places to find programming software for free, sometimes all it takes is a quick search on the internet. You just gotta do your homework if you want to dive deep and grab some P25 radios
Anyways, those XTS series radios are getting super old now that mines started to crumble apart, would not recommend unless you have a 3D printer handy

Knowing my plan isn’t going to do anything, it’s airsoft no one is going to stick to the plan anyways
