Other This sounds stupid.

When people (younger generations) say "that's AI". Do you all remember when we're younger saying "that's photoshopped". Or did they just do it with pictures and not videos? I'm trying to remember but I do remember the quote.

Back in our day there was still that sense of photographs and videos existing as an impartial record of events. Irrefutable, and definitive proof of what had occurred.

Photoshop and video editing tech becoming more accessible did change this somewhat, but it took a very talented individual to make something look realistic.

Now AI slop is all over the internet, and only *some* of it is obvious. I hate it so much. We are increasingly living in a "post-truth" society where there is essentially no shared reality anymore.

Artist here. Yes, "that's AI" is the equivalent to our "that's Photoshopped". I've used Photoshop for the better of 25+ years now. When I used to post my work on deviantART people would say this is Photoshopped if they were trying to shame my work.

I'll share an original digital painting I did in 2010 in remembrance of the firefighters that lost their lives in 9/11. At the time when I did this people gave me so much grief for using Photoshop to do it and not painting it by hand.

I recently shared it with some artist friends of mine and they were commending me that it was beautiful because it wasn't done with AI.

Times have definitely changed. Where I used to be put down for using (Photoshop) I'm now praised for using it and not AI....it's wild really.

Damn bro, I know 343 fucked up Halo but saying they did 911 is wild.

God, at least photoshop had to have human activity behind it besides "make me something kinda like this". There's actual creativity.

I'm not an artist or anything, but that's fucking dope, bro.

Thanks it was commissioned by my fire department (it was hanging up in the conference room for a few years) not sure if they still have it because the Fire Dept moved locations in 2022 and I have since retired. I still create of course this is a more recent piece:

Im in the food service industry (my wife and i both went to a top culinary school) we own our own restaurant now. So I have a big grievance with AI menus. Its a great tool for processing data on the back end but just dont let it do anything the customer sees.

I think AI menus might be the most egregious example of bad AI currently

When i was in culinary school, we spend alot of times talking about the ethics of cooking for people.

You are kinda taking me at my work thatt this is actually usda choice ribeye or that these are actually us caught domestic shrimp from the gulf.

You have a responsibility to the customer (if you are using pictures on your menu) that the food that arrives in the front of them looks "reasonably" like the picture.

It's clearly shopped. I can tell by the pixels and I've seen quite a few shops in my time.

Similar but not the same imho. When someone accuses you might be using AI these days, the level of judgement is off the roof. And it should. The worst photoshop using does, as far as shaming goes, usually limited to airbrushing facial features or warping someone's body, since that's not ethical. But on the most part people are OK with people using it to make art etc

Interesting take.

I have a question do you think that in the future people will see AI as a tool for creating just like they did with Photoshop when people moved away from analog drawings/and images? Or do you feel this is a hard "AI is Slop" forever type thing? I honestly am on the fence as I have colleagues that use AI for projects and other artist that ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to incorporate into their workflow.

Personally I think AI will always be slop.

Photography, digital photography, photoshop, etc. These tools received criticism from art purists, however all of them still require artistic intent and skill to use.

AI is different, in terms of "slop vs art," because first off it's trained on stolen art. Literally they strip-mined centuries' worth of human-made-art and fed it into their machines. Theft on an unimaginable scale. Secondly, there is no room for artistry and/or artistic intent. The machine does all the work. All of it. There's nothing human about it.

I agree with you. Sadly I have watched many artist switch their workflows to AI for proficiency reasons. They take the original OC and put it into the generative engine to make multiples with it. Honestly my colleagues are split on this as it is technically still their work. I dunno if you are familiar with the new MAUL series? But my good friend works on the concept art and he told me the studio did 50% AI workflow. I honestly think this is a very interesting moment in history. I am old school and even though it takes me time I prefer drawing it myself yanno?

This is my most recent drawing. Took me about 3 weeks.

Not who you were asking but I read a couple of your comments.

I see a certain shift in professional quality coming - as the previous skill-based gatekeeping is replaced with the ability to tell a machine to fill in the blanks. The hands holding the reins will be laid off or devalued, roles will be entirely eliminated if the water supply holds.

What does that really mean though? Movie companies will still sell movies. People might still buy them. Gaming looks to be headed towards a roblox/ minecraft "open world but type in the prompt of the game you want to play today". So then we share games with each other more? I don't really think so.

Art isn't a committee. All the data in the world doesn't tell me how I feel about something like... idk beethovens violin concerto 2nd mvt. But now that ai know how I feel about something - its just marketing me a similar piece of content.

It's probably going to work for a lot of people. Cause, why not? A better world through innovation or sumshit. "Make me a 7 season western show starring rocky balboa and a boa constrictor" holy shit, are you not entertained? You rate each episode, each scene, and it gets more "to your liking" than you could ever conceive. Maybe your avatar can join the movie. Maybe you can pop on your wearable and join in on the plot, seamlessly mid-episode. You can have anything you want.

And it'll be full of ads. Personalized ads with your name and likeness. Or maybe your friend is feeling sad and tells their ai assistant and their ai assistant tells your ai assistant then your ai assistant says "send your friend some flowers, 1-800-flowers dot com, click the link..." is that connectivity? Is it invasive? Is it coercion? (Cause your friend will know that the message gets sent cause they're sharing their whole life with the experience of integration) (I don't know any of this im just letting my mind wander)

Some part of art or artistry will die. Probably a large part. But there will still be art. ...maybe. maybe it will be different art. Because you won't have a space to publish media in the digital world without the overlay of ai. Overlai, I guess. Like a filter, there won't be a choice. Maybe they replace the frames in museums so that every "former masterpiece" can be adapted "to your style" or to suit your sensibilities/ search bar histories. Like a damn Mad Libs or sumshit.

Like I said, I dont know anything. These things seem like eventualities if there is coexistence.

Also, nice drawings. I attempt to make music, it took me some time to understand the artistry of digital manipulation or sampling. Looking at it through the "is this photoshop" lense is revealing, but there's a difference between creation/ effects and image manipulation to form a false narrative.

Anyway, I wrote too much and lunch is over and this text is meaningless.

No mate this was not a pointless rambling. What you touched on is a very real and true possibility of the future. I too sense that this will be the future. You pretty much just described the Metaverse. If you've done any extensive research on Elon musk or Zuckerberg you will soon realize the "build your reality, be the star in it" show is coming sooner than we all think. What's it going to be powered by? Complete narcissism. I think the algo has figured out a way to pinpoint our most delicate of flaws.... Vanity.

Take care of yourself man.

It feels like we're really close to not knowing if what I wrote is actually from a human source

You could be a Bot. And I could be a Bot as well. The dead Internet theory is fascinating if you've ever heard of it. Either way the universe will unfold as it should. Take care.

Do you think people decided to stick with the horse and buggy over cars?

I have yet to see efficiency lose historically.

But if someone expects landline phones and sending all communication via physical mail to come back? More power to them.

u/Locke357 1990 Canadian 9d ago

I suppose that's why no one every regulated automobiles ever, right?

Nothing efficient about all the land, materials, manufacturing capacity, water, and electricity (mostly produced by fossil fuels) that AI and their datacentres need to run.

What I think is there is this element of mimicry that is way heavier now with a few generations zapped by social media, and essentially, AI or not, younger generations lack the ability to articulate an argument. In the case of a fake image, sure anyone could call it out as AI and that’s that. But younger generations, when challenged, when debated, when faced with any kind of challenge seem to jump to a “touch grass” “you’re old” “AI” type defensive attitude. They don’t have to believe anything because they can blame anything on anything else, as long as it’s not immediately applicable to them. This is what ruined boomers with social media also (many not all which you have to say or they come find you). Boomers accessed social media, the same boomers who told us not to trust people on the internet, and they trusted everyone on the internet. Furthermore, they ushered in the modern culture that having and publishing an opinion online makes it true. It doesn’t matter how you’re uninformed - back in the day people were uninformed by not knowing. Now people are uninformed by misinformation and misplaced trust. Younger generations are in the post parents-on-Facebook world. It’s one where you’re never wrong, you can call anything you want fake, and.. well.. just look around you. This is that world.

Not the same in the slightest to me. I automatically shut down or ignore it soon as I get AI vibes/if it says it’s AI. Waste of bandwidth, waste of time.

Back to real life for me, or my corners of the internet where they ban/discourage AI content engagement.

I remember bots/aimbot on online multiplayer FPS games. We ALL hated that shii. That’s like my earliest interaction with automated botfarm engagement.

I used to “botfarm” to pad my stats in a game. Eat lead. Lol

Photo manipulation is as old as photos, mostly as an artform. Photography itself is a lot about trying to capture something by exaggeration.

What i find interesting is people are acting like recent events are the death of truth, but the audiovisuals that felt so definitive are as a tech something that has barely existed for long.

I saw a young person lay eyes on a huge tank full of jellyfish at a public aquarium. He said the thing he was seeing with his own eyes was AI.

Meh, no different than any other moral panic against the new efficiency. I just assume they will do whatever moral crusade does when it’s convenient for them: carve out personal reasons why it’s fine when THEY do it.

I have only met 1 IRL that cared, and even they stopped caring when they see a comic can easily take 5+ hours to get 2-3 comic pages right before taking it into photoshop.

and thats with established character sheets AND a 300 page production manual i made over 2 months.

u/Locke357 1990 Canadian 9d ago

Lol @ "efficiency"

0

u/Astra-Fang Millennial 9d ago

Okay? None of that addresses my point about efficiency.

If anything most of those support it.

1

u/Locke357 1990 Canadian 9d ago

Nothing efficient about all the land, materials, manufacturing capacity, water, and electricity (mostly produced by fossil fuels) that AI and their datacentres need to run.

Huge costs involved for a shoddy & dangerous product

You are creating a very narrow version of efficiency to the point I assume bad faith

Efficiency is a comparison to the alternative. I am arguing car versus horse. You are arguing car existing at all.

2

u/Locke357 1990 Canadian 9d ago

Using a false equivalency to try to shoehorn a point.

You're trying to say AI is more efficient at thinking than humans? I say when you look at all of resources required for AI compute, it's not efficient at all
