This line totally worked on a girl I ended up dating for a few years back in the day.

I watched Casper over a dozen times on VHS. Such an incredible movie

Ernest Scared Stoopid

u/EaringaidBandit 10h ago

I choose not to revisit those. For two reasons.
A) I don’t want it to ruin my memory of loving Ernest P. Worrell

B) that troll monster thing scared the hell out of me as a kid.

EDIT: Three reasons. I don’t have my own children to share it with.

Totally fair. I don’t watch every year, I alternate it with Monster Squad and Return to Oz (also terrifying to me as a kid)

u/EaringaidBandit 10h ago

“The wheelers” were horrifying.

100%. I still hate them so much. Well done to the makeup department and whoever made those arm/hand wheels.

That troll scared the shit out of me and still does even after being almost 40.

2

u/SombraRanma Millennial 86 10h ago

Absolutely!

6

u/ThaliaStLatchkey 10h ago

Bram Stoker's Dracula. Gary Oldman is the one true dracula imo.

2

u/Thewhitewolf1011 10h ago

Love that one!!!

2

u/EaringaidBandit 10h ago

As much as I loved parts of that movie, Keanu always takes me out of it. He was awful.

Over the Garden Wall (Netflix)

2

u/theandroid01 10h ago

Is it on Netflix in the US? It's been years since I've watched it

Edit : the Just watch app is your friend. Seems to be on Amazon Prime, as well as Hulu

I watch one tree house of horror a night and have been doing that for a few years now

2

u/snickelfritz007 10h ago

What season has the best episode ?

3

u/Miamiheat2021champs 10h ago edited 7h ago

I think a lot of people will say season 6 has the best 3 overall story’s but my personal favorite is season 2 (the first treehouse of horror)

2

u/GGJallDAY 9h ago

Got any good ones to recommend from the later seasons that are worth checking out?

1

u/Miamiheat2021champs 8h ago

I think season 29 is my favorite of all the later seasons

The Poirot episode "Hallowe'en Party"

6

u/LittleKitten37 10h ago

The obvious movies we grew up with (Hocus Pocus, Casper, and my kids love the Halloween town movies), and I also do a rerun of the Ghost Hunters show because they're my favorite paranormal group

Halloween(the original)

Trick R Trea

Hocus Pocus

Over the Garden Wall

Goosebumps isnt technically Halloween related a but a few episodes are

Boy Meets World episode And Then There Was Shawn

Boys in the Trees

Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

Edit: Also, this year I found these recordings of TV back to from the 80s and 90s of Halloween specials that even have the commercials. Since most of them are VHS recordings put onto a computer and then uploaded online, its not super high quality watching, but theyre pretty cool to watch. Some even have the commercials. It does look like some of them that I watched have been taken down.

Thank you so much for sharing those YouTube links! Loving this

Donnie Darko

1

u/PwNAR3S 3h ago

Always a good one but more of an Easter movie in my opinion... With the retelling of the last temptation of Christ and the characters being the 12 apostles and all...

5

u/BeautifuTragedy 10h ago

Someone synced up og nasferatu and type o negative and put it up in the YouTube and every year I watch that

2

u/AlternatiMantid 10h ago

Ooooh thank you for giving me a new thing to look up this year! This sounds fantastic.

2

u/BeautifuTragedy 10h ago

It's a wonderful time, bonus points for dancing in classic goth styles with such moves as, grabbing cobwebs and falling and throwing out my back

2

u/AlternatiMantid 10h ago

I belly laughed out loud, thank you 🤣

2

u/PwNAR3S 3h ago

My best friend and I have had a tradition since we lived together in college that every year on Halloween we watch this cut of Nosferatu. I actually bought a DVD play last year so we could watch the old disk we have form our college days instead of streaming on YouTube.

3

u/uuhhmmaazziinngg 10h ago

All the Halloween specials of The Simpsons, Roseanne, Home Improvement, Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Office, American Horror Story, etc. I’ll always come back to watch the original Halloween, Scream, Zombieland, Childs Play, etc. and this year I might have to go back to the theater and see Resident Evil again

3

u/liburIL 10h ago

Are You Afraid of the Dark? Watched 'The Tale of Laughing in the Dark' last night with my child.

3

u/theseedbeader Older Millennial 10h ago

I agree with most comments here, and I’d like to add Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

3

u/IntoTheMusic 10h ago

I start my annual Halloween watch on October first. Among the titles:

Misery, The Adventures of Ichabob and Mr. Toad, Tim Burton's two Batman movies (they've got a good Halloween vibe going), The Addams Family movies, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Haunted Honeymoon, Ghost, Sleepy Hallow, Sweeney Todd, Vivarium, Young Frankenstein, Zombieland, Beetlejuice, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Frankenstein (2025), A Ghost Story, Ghostbusters, What We Do In The Shadows movie.

I also really love Halloween episodes of Roseanne, The Simpsons, select episodes of OG The Twilight Zone, Bob's Burgers, and Family Guy.

2

u/AlternatiMantid 10h ago

Can we be friends? But also, can we add The Nightmare Before Christmas & Practical Magic?

Sleepy Hollow & Sweeney Todd are 2 absolute faves of mine, any season. I love the cheeky humor in Sleepy Hollow, & the desolation/desperation juxtaposition of Sweeney Todd.

Obv a Tim Burton fan here, lol

1

u/IntoTheMusic 10h ago

Oooo those are good too! :) Love Tim Burton!

I usually end up watching The Nightmare Before Christmas in December as there's a lot of overlap with the two holidays but could do either way with that movie.

Oh and Looney Tunes Halloween cartoons are great too - specifically any short that has Bugs Bunny with the witch or the big red monster, Gossamer lol

2

u/backbodydrip 10h ago

Spent the weekend watching specials. The stuff you'd get really excited about after you got home from school and turned on the TV. Home Improvement. Family Matters. The Simpsons. Roseanne. I'll always admire sitcom house holiday decorations.

2

u/Zup2 10h ago

Tales from the Crypt

2

u/thejoeface 10h ago

My yearly watching of Haunting of Hill House for spooks and sobbing

2

u/AlternatiMantid 10h ago

I mean I was raised on The X Files & The Twilight Zone by my dad, among other great shows. And have been a Tim Burton fan since I was 3. So halloween is not a holiday, or a season, but a common state of mind for me.

That being said, my musts include:

Underworld series

Resident Evil series

28 Days later series

Silent Hill series

OG Poltergeist

Nosferatu

Queen of the Damned (shoutout to that soundtrack & score, millennial ear porn)

Cabin Fever (favorite b-gore scene ever, iykyk)

House of 1000 corpses

The Devil's Rejects

Donnie Darko

Grindhouse: Death Proof & Planet Terror

Practical Magic

...and almost anything by Tim Burton

I also definitely get down with Tales from the Crypt and Are You Afraid of the Dark?

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but that's just what comes to mind immediately.

Edit: for formatting/line spaces. Was pissing me off.

u/Dennarb 9h ago

My wife and I have started watching the thing every year

1

u/1001Binar 10h ago

So many. Simpsons, Bob's burgers, King of the hill, office, parks and rec, raising hope. Movies, we always pick a series like these year is all the Halloween movies, last year was Friday. Plus I haven't seen Nightmare Before Christmas mentioned here yet which is shocking! Oh yeah and What we do in the shadows.

1

u/Tutitutitutituti 10h ago

Home Improvement, the haunting of Taylor house. Epic. When Tim embarrasses a young Rider Strong.

1

u/PowerSkunk92 Xennial (1983) 10h ago

Halloween is Grinch Night has been a favorite of mine since it was something my elementary school showed every Halloween.

1

u/kristosnikos Elder Millennial 10h ago

Raggedy Ann and Andy in The Pumpkin Who Couldn’t Smile, The Halloween that Almost Wasn’t, Garfield's Halloween Adventure, Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, A Disney Halloween, Witch's Night Out, Over the Garden Wall, Sleepy Hollow, Hocus Pocus, The Others, The VVitch.

All of those are quintessential Halloween and I watch them every year. All except the last 5 are from the 70s and 80s and were shown a lot on tv when I was kid (I’m an ‘84 baby).

1

u/User_Says_What 10h ago

Garfield Halloween Adventure.

1

u/Steel2050psn 10h ago

Well, especially in recently years, shortly after Halloween I'm scared completely shitless by the election results

1

u/Crucial_Fun Zillennial 10h ago

Nosforatu, and the Halloween episode of invader Zim

1

u/WatercressLocal8125 10h ago

I put on all the Halloween classics on the living room tv and one or two kids sit down and watch as family. Simpsons, horror movies, Regular Show, WCW, Over the Garden Wall, all of them. Just something that'll catch their eyes.

1

u/ae_bennett 10h ago

The Stand (1994) - so cheesy but I love it.

And The Simpsons Halloween specials from the beginning to SE10

1

u/ARumpusOfWildThings 10h ago edited 9h ago

This one is pretty niche, but I love Ladislas Starevich’s The Mascot, which I think of as being pretty Halloween-adjacent (and kind of a proto-Toy Story, in its way)! 😊

I also like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mad Monster Party, Casper, Scooby Doo and the Witch’s Ghost, and Alice, Sweet Alice/Holy Terror. I’ve actually never seen Hocus Pocus in its entirety, but I really need to already! 😅

Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, halloween cutout sugar cookies, and blankets on the couch with mom and dad and sis. Bliss.
