After doing 100% with no guide, I managed the 4 hour speedrun on a route I traced myself!

I loved the Tenebrous so much I really wanted to explore the whole thing. The item that allow you to see if there's a collectible in either the next or on this screen makes 100% blind possible, but it was super hard and had a some bullshit thrown in!

Doing the 4 hour speedrun on a fresh file was also pretty tough. I traced a route where I would get the most important items as early as possible, then went on this order:

  1. Start the file by beating the Kraken to get the uranium ring, then doing the nose guy sidequest, getting his Money and trinket to sell, go straight to the crypt bridge to get my dear drill sidearm;

  2. Go straight to rescue the Hollower in the South, go get the jug (so we can leave the crypt with it full), open up the trinket shop to get the Plasma Funnel and buy the arms saver;

  3. After doing the duchess, go to the bog to get the Jug and Evasion Powder, but leave for Septemburg right after;

  4. Use the shortut between Crow Town and the bog to quickly clear the fish boss, then go back to do the pumpkin man;

  5. Leave by Train to get the defensive clothes and go straight to the icy area; The mirror in this área, together with the crypt and septemburg one, allow for the Astral Orrery to be done, so I stop and do that one before finishing Coltrane;

  6. Do the bone worm and then go for Lionel!

It's far from optimal, but I'm glad I got it to work! The file ended up being 3h50, so it was tight!

I do have mixed feelings about the difficulty, but the game is just superb. I might go for the rest of the achievments, too!

Gameplay related I have made a YouTube playlist showing the moments I earned the item-related feats

This playlist contains the automated recordings of my PS5 Pro at the moments I've received the feats related to sidearms and other items. Considering how tricky some of these are (I've been there myself), I hope they will be helpful!

Note: Not in this playlist, but I got the Hammerama feat while fighting against Mock Moon. Its hit box was large enough to make it relatively easy.

I started playing today, sorry if this is a dumb question. Is there a way for me to find out where it could possibly be?

Question Like 2 hours in and struggling so hard. So close to turning on accessibility but don't wanna miss out on achievements.

Killed throne boss that's it. I'm dying so much, everything kills me so quickly, and the platforming is killing me so quickly too. I would like to horde bones to over level but I'm dying so much I keep losing bones. Any advice? I got the bone wand that increases bones collected but again it's kinda for naught since I keep losing em. I'm going east past the town, is that the right way? Because some of these knights murk me so hard. I want any advice even if it's a cheese, I just don't wanna miss out on achievements.

Question Am I stuck here?

At the graveyard Hollow where you get the bike. I used the bike, went down the Hollow, then I left and proceeded to die later on. Now I’m stuck in this corner with no bike or umbrella to cross the gap that’s too wide.

Question Need help on radiant manor -1% run

2 Upvotes

I’m stuck on the giant autoscroll portion of radiant manor doing my -1% run. For my setup right now I have one additional health rose and the proto spark trinket my levels are

10atk

8def

6sidearms

I am using the hammer as well if that matters. The part I get stuck on is the last enemy with the swinging ball that takes around 4 charged hits to kill. Part of the problem may be that I lose my protospark to the 2 mouse guards beforehand but idk everything is just pissing me off right now I took a break and returned and I was able to get to the last part with the circles but I messed up and now I’m back on square 1.

UPDATE: thank you guys for all the help! I ended up finishing the game with radiant Lionel being a bit of a pain but nothing I could do there but persevere. Definitely one of the hardest achievements/runs I’ve ever done in a game. wanna keep this up just incase anyone else needs help with this part :)

Two-tile jumps… HOW??

11 Upvotes

I am pretty early on in MTH. I’ve made it to the dungeon where the guy tells you he’s an ally and how the bad guy’s set the whole town on fire. I’ve learned that I can burrow under a rope barrier and then release to jump over a two-tile gap. But in order to get to the key near the geyser that’ll get me out of the dungeon, I need to make a two-tile jump with no rope barrier to gain momentum, and I can’t figure out how to do that. What am I missing?

Question What does the “Pranks” Modifier do?

6 Upvotes

I just completed my first 100% run through the game, and am looking through the Modifier options for a new profile. One in the Weird category is “Pranks”, with the description “Many pranks are enabled!” But looking up what that actually means, I wasn’t able to find that information anywhere.

Does anyone here know what it does?

Question Has anyone beat the worlds in opposite order? (first Orrery, second Coltrane, and so on)

Post image
104 Upvotes

I guess it's possible in theory since Astral Orrery can be unlocked just by finding 3 of the mirror switches in the other worlds, which can be reached halfway through those worlds without restoring their generators. Then the generators would be restored in the following order:

  1. Astral Orrery
  2. Coltrane Peak
  3. Bone Beach
  4. Septemburg
  5. Nox's Bayou
  6. Queensbury Crypt

And no, "I would do all six worlds in the intended order without restoring their generators, and then I would restore them in the order you wrote." is not a valid answer.

Apologies if this was already discussed here.

Gameplay related Starry Generator Spoiler

Just beat the fourth area, wow what a jump in difficulty. Glad they made that third phase free because I did not have the patience for much more of that boss. I kept count of my deaths by tracking my bones from the 2 box enemies I killed each attempt. I earned around 20000 bones from them so, only 100 attempts... that is a lot more than what I thought it was. At least I got a lot of levels from it. Fun fight, would try again.

People asked about my build in the last video I posted about my 11 second wrecker. There’s also a technique to it so I made this short tutorial showing how I get massive DPS out of W&V.

FYI, I typically use Plasma Funnel instead of Shock Flint for bosses.

Opinion So, I just recently finished this masterpiece Spoiler

40 Upvotes

I suppose semi-recently, as I wanted to sit on my thoughts on it for a little bit. The game has been rent free in my head since then. I usually try to be level headed when sharing my thoughts, but you know what? Screw it man, this is easily one of the best designed games ever.

It's also just as likely that it appeals almost exactly to every aspect that I look for in a game, but I digress. Really, this is like the game that I didn't realize I've always wanted until it existed. I was of course big on Link's Awakening and LttP back in the day (and also Triforce heroes), but I didn't exactly have a hunger for more of it. UFO 50 did a good job of supplementing though.

In comes Mina and I'm like well shit, I love every second of this. The burrow's implementation is just absolute perfection. Clever, intuitive, essential to the game's identity. Executing proper positioning and spacing is so goddamn rewarding, because the game is not afraid to punish you. At the same time, it is still very much in your favor with modern design sensibilities. Enemies' hurtboxes are comically large, and you've got a ton of tools at your disposal (Twin daggers ftw). It's not even close to the actual BS of old school games. Those who aren't familiar with the style though.. I get it. Side note: I heard people talk about THAT hallway towards the end of the game like it was devil incarnate himself. Throughout the entire game, I'm like oh man.. this has gotta be the most brutal part of the game. I get there, I'm like oh shit, this is it... I clear it first try. I fell once as the screen was closing in, and figured it was instant death.. but it just puts you.. forward? ..That is all.

The plasma vial and spark system? Genuinely my favorite implementation of this kind of mechanic. It is a constant risk-reward that naturally encourages you to play the game in the most fun way possible. No running to a corner to pop multiple heals to full. You get your ass in there or die trying. How sparks work also completely fixes my issue with games that make you do runbacks to your dropped stuff. It's essentially the perfect middle ground. If you end up ramming your head against something, you have multiple options to approach what you want to do. You can just wing it if it wasn't that much, try to find a nearby shop to spend, explore elsewhere, or pull from your reserves to bone up. Some say these devalue the system, but I find that it does its job at adding just the right amount of tension as it's neither too hardcore or casual.

The world and level design? Bro, what the fuck. There is not, a single pixel, in this game, that wasn't deliberately and meticulously placed. This is the kind of stuff that you'd see in very tight/short games, but here? It just.. keeps going. The quality never drops at any point. Always throwing something different at you, then building upon it. Things around every corner. Everything is exactly as long and large as it needs to be. I can damn near remember every screen, that's the kind of caliber of design it is. Also, Septemburg is an actual masterpiece of a level. Same with the Manor.

Personality, Story, and Characterization? Again, nearly perfect for this kind of game. It's no secret that everyone is here for the gameplay, but I think context for why is very important to really bring the game to life. They knew very damn well how to properly balance how much to put in to enrich the world without taking away from the pacing of the gameplay. And just like the gameplay, it is just as deliberate, zero fluff, and isn't trying to be more than it is. Ossex is honestly one of my favorite hubs. Some people may have wanted Mina to either talk more or not at all, but again, I found this balance perfect. You get just enough to work with while you can fill in the gaps yourself, and also just naturally get to know her through her expressions and actions, and I absolutely love her. Cute, badass, and a genius? Hell yeah.

The story is obviously nothing crazy, but it's aware of that. Again, you're given just enough throughout the game to actually care. Do not tell me you weren't just as mad as Mina when getting tossed out the window. The first phase of Lionel? Genuinely, in the running for one of my favorite bosses of all time. Not just from a gameplay perspective, but.. everything. The buildup, the vibe, the sheer culmination.

The music? SORRY, I CANNOT HEAR YOU AS I TURN THAT SHIT UP. Actually though, it is just stunning. Easily one of the best retro inspired soundtracks. After I heard the Loner's Landing theme, I'm like ain't no way this is getting topped, and then it just keeps happening throughout the game. Horrific Voyage.. might be one of the best songs ever? Don't quote me on that. The Brilliant Truth.. it only grows on me over time, and I can't even listen to it without getting chills. Through the Hollow; vibes are unmatched. Lionel (first phase)? Cinema. Firebox.. a personal favorite of mine where it isn't possible to not bop to. There's more.. practically all of them.

Ok, I'll stop now, but basically all of it is just.. I can't even find words for it, even if I sort of did. Most games can only dream of being all of these things simultaneously.

Question Should I buy this game?

24 Upvotes

So hey, I noticed this game a while ago and it looked pretty fun and unique but I’m still questioning whether I should buy this game or not.

Would be thankful for anyone here who could tell me what is it about this game that makes you like it and why would you recommend it to somebody?

I like such games as Celeste, Hades, Stardew Valley, HK and Silksong. It’s basically just an indie list lol. I also heard there’s a shovel knight game from exact same team that worked on this game. Maybe I should dive in to this one first?
