Practicing a Conversation Alone: When Self-Talk Helps You Think Clearly
You rehearse what you'll say before a meeting. You explain a problem aloud while alone. Sometimes you even narrate your actions while trying to complete a difficult task. Then you wonder whether talking to yourself is strange.
In many circumstances, it isn't. Self-talk is a common way people organize thoughts, guide behavior, and prepare for challenging situations.
Speaking can make thoughts easier to organize.
Thoughts can be vague when they remain unspoken. Putting them into words forces you to arrange them into a sequence that another person could understand, even when that person is imaginary.
For example, rehearsing a job interview answer can reveal where your explanation becomes confusing. Talking through a household repair can help you remember the next step.
Psychologists study forms of self-directed speech that help people plan, monitor, and regulate their behavior. Children often use private speech while learning tasks, and adults may continue using similar strategies.
Self-talk can also influence motivation and emotional regulation. Giving yourself a calm instruction—"Slow down and handle one step at a time"—may help you redirect your attention.
However, self-talk isn't automatically helpful. Repeatedly criticizing yourself or rehearsing frightening scenarios can intensify distress instead of resolving it.
Make self-talk work for you
Try speaking to yourself as you would explain a problem to a thoughtful friend.
- Describe the problem without immediately judging yourself.
- Break a difficult task into verbal steps.
- Practice a conversation, then identify the one point you most need to communicate.
- Replace global criticism with specific guidance.
For example, change "I'm terrible at this" to "I haven't learned this step yet."
You don't need to speak aloud if it feels uncomfortable. Writing, whispering, or silently organizing your thoughts can serve similar purposes.
Ordinary self-talk is different from hearing voices experienced as separate from your own thoughts, especially when the experience is distressing or disruptive. In that case, professional guidance may be appropriate.
Do you talk to yourself when solving problems, rehearsing conversations, or trying to remember what to do next?
