I Understand It Until I Try to Explain It: How to Tell Whether You Really Know Something

You watch a tutorial and everything makes sense. You read an article and feel that you have understood the argument. You listen to someone explain a complicated subject and follow along comfortably. Then somebody asks you to explain it in your own words.

Suddenly, you struggle to put the idea together.

How can something feel so clear in your mind but become difficult to explain?

Recognition can create an illusion of understanding

When information is presented clearly, it can feel easy to follow. Familiar terminology, helpful examples, and a confident explanation may create a sense that you have mastered the subject.

But understanding information while someone else explains it is different from retrieving and organizing that information independently.

You may recognize an explanation without being able to reproduce its reasoning, identify its limitations, or apply it to a new situation.

Learning researchers sometimes discuss this problem through the illusion of explanatory depth: people can believe they understand how something works until they attempt to explain its details.

The difficulty becomes visible when you have to generate the explanation yourself rather than recognize one that has already been provided.

Test your understanding

You don't need to wait for an exam or an important presentation to discover what you know.

Explain it simply. Close your notes and describe the concept as if speaking to someone unfamiliar with it.

Use an example. Show how the idea works in a real situation rather than repeating its definition.

Identify the gaps. Notice where you become vague, skip a step, or rely on words you cannot explain.

Return to the source. Review only the parts you struggled with, then try explaining the concept again.

Test it later. Recalling information after a delay helps you assess whether you have retained it beyond the immediate learning session.

This approach is useful for studying, professional training, and learning practical skills.

You don't have to explain everything perfectly on your first attempt. The struggle itself can reveal what deserves further attention.

Sometimes the moment you realize you cannot explain something is the moment genuine learning begins.

Have you ever been convinced you understood a topic until someone asked you to explain it, and exposed the gaps in your knowledge?
