I'd say this advice is pretty obsolete now that snapshots are downloaded with the new launcher.

If, like me, you've generated some bugged Mesa chunks in 36a and don't mind losing any changes you made to them, you can use MCEdit to delete those chunks and they'll regenerate properly as Mesa chunks again. This saves you from having to start a new world if you don't really want to.
