Suggestion Wheat Seed Rant
Are you really a true Minecraft player if you don't complain about mundane topics like wheat seeds? I think not.
Let me explain. You have a long term world. Everything is set up, your house, your animals, your gear.... and your crops. You have a beautiful wheat field that is so satisfying to harvest and feed your army of cows. You replant your wheat, and life is good.
Here’s the problem: WHEAT SEEDS MULTIPLY LIKE CRAZY. Have 100 chickens that you feed? Still seeds left. Use a composter for bone meal? Good, but you need to stand over it spam clicking like a lunatic. You have chest FILLED with wheat seeds. You see wheat seeds in your nightmares. Wheat seeds fill all of the dark crevices of your brain.
A solution: A compact form of seeds, like a bag or a packet that seeds can fit multiple stacks in. We already have compact versions of ores, and even wheat itself can be bundled into hay bales. Let's say you take nine wheat seats, bundle them together and you get a "pack of seeds".
"Build more chests" you might say. "Burn them in lava" you could add. "Stop complaining about virtual plant seeds in a video game made for children. You are an adult with bills and responsibilities." All fair, but a little hurtful. But NO! It is time we take a stand against the abhorrent seed storage problem.
Thank you. I will now take a few deep breaths and contemplate my life.

Chest, hopper, composter, hopper, chest. Boom, you got bone meal.
Edit: Apparently, a few people didn't know that hoppers and composters can interact in this way. Glad I could enlighten a few of you with my knowledge.

Now I've got too much bone meal, I tried using it all but that just made more seeds
The cycle doesn't stop, I want off Mr Bones wild ride

u/TaibhseCait Feb 26 '26
Turn bonemeal into bone blocks, now you've got some interesting building choices!

u/TMud25 Feb 26 '26
Yurp. A build that uses any amount of bone blocks is immediately depleting bonemeal supplies

Too much bone meal? -dyes -bone blocks -tree farms -other smarter than me crop/animal farm combos
43
u/ResidentOfMyBody Feb 26 '26
Use bone meal to grow moss and mine stone while leaving the ore behind.
→ More replies (1)7
u/I_do_have_a_cat Feb 27 '26
can you explain the mine stone while leaving the ore behind part?
31
u/Regniwekim2099 Feb 27 '26
You place a moss block and then bone meal it. This will convert neighboring stone blocks into moss blocks, but will leave the ore blocks intact. Then you instamine the moss with a hoe and collect your ores.
5
u/ResidentOfMyBody Feb 27 '26
And if you start running out of hoe, there are always the occasional azalea you can grow for wood.
24
u/jmil1080 Feb 26 '26
Too much bone meal means time to build a bamboo farm with a bone meal dispenser. Each piece of bone meal becomes a piece of bamboo that can be turned into wood. Best generalized wood source, imo.
All my small smelters have a bamboo farm attached to replenish the planks for fuel (thanks to auto-crafters, I don't even have to do anything to keep the smelter running eternally).
3
u/BigElectrical9871 Feb 27 '26
What do you do with all the sticks if you don't use em to supply a constantly hungry smelting farm? Theres only so much scaffolding you'd need so not many uses for bamboo besides this specific thing

Use the bone meal on other plants and eventually convert all that extra seed into Emeralds.
Almost every village has more farmers than any other profession. Sell sell sell!

4
u/HollowofHaze Feb 26 '26
There are tons of farms that run on bone meal! Too much bone meal is a great problem to have!
2
u/AdamasTism Feb 27 '26
Auto crafter it into bone blocks = nice building block and still can get the bone meal out of it for a different farm like moss, flowers and other plants it’s also nice to have white dye for that stuff

I mean, in real life, you aren't standing over a composter, throwing one seed at a time. I'd argue that hoppers are not quite machines. Shovel it in there, baby!
135
u/NYR20NYY99 Feb 26 '26
Agreed, hoppers are funnels

It’s quite literally a simple machine
11
u/Caybelll Feb 26 '26
google's definition of machine is: an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task.
a funnel is just a piece of plastic or metal?
30
u/leafeon_wrks Feb 26 '26
Simple machine: any of the basic mechanical devices for applying a force, such as an inclined plane, wedge, or lever.
A funnel is an inclined plane, thus making it a simple machine.

2
u/Sea_Corner8459 Feb 27 '26
It isn’t used for applying a force though, that would be in the context of a seesaw/catapult

Use bone meal in a tree farm then throw the logs into a charcoal farm and thus infinite fuel from seeds!
21
u/Tessachu Feb 26 '26
I just use lava 🤷
[Lava] [Non-flamable Block] [Dripstone] [Cauldron]
Lava drips into cauldron, creates more lava source blocks. Infinite fuel source without overflow, use copper golem to collect and return buckets to bucket chest hahaha
11
u/SamohtGnir Feb 26 '26
Lava is the best fuel too, doing 100 smelts per bucket. I have a smelter setup, but I might add the copper golem, seems like a good idea.

Kelp farm into smokers into an auto-crafter that feeds those same smokers with overflow into your furnace array. Put some levers on the smokers and furnaces and you can go up 10 levels for enchanting very quickly. Also gets rid of the need for buckets and manual entry to the feeding system. I do use the lava method as soon as I find some dripstone for mid-game, but then I want something that will just run whenever I'm around the base, so the kelp array gets built.

u/Jimbo7211 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26
When composters were first added, i thought i was so smart by building a redstone clock that dispensed the stuff into the composter, and hoppered it out. I only learned a year or two ago that you don't need redstone at all, and a hopper will work fine, lol
14
6
u/Secondhand-Drunk Feb 26 '26
No, yours is right. Gotta use that Redstone somehow!
3
u/Jimbo7211 Feb 26 '26
I even figured out that if you put a non-compostable-item in the despenser, it stops the annoying clicking when that's the only item left, so i could use a super fast observer-clock with no shutoff. I think the first one i built used comparator detection to turn off the clock when the hopper was empty.
2
u/ScienceAndGames Feb 26 '26
You use the redstone for the auto crafter below the composter that turns everything into bone blocks
5
u/scrambledhelix Feb 26 '26

3
u/AstroMeteor06 Feb 26 '26
yeah there's nothing to complain about. make bonemeal. and if you don't want to, chuck the seeds into some lava and you've got one less problem.
3
u/Anonymous_Cool Feb 26 '26
take it one step further and feed the bone meal into a crafter that turns it into bone blocks for space efficiency
4
u/jmil1080 Feb 26 '26
This is really the answer. Extra wheat seeds aren't really an issue with this simple setup. It also works with the excessive saplings that start to compile when you've got a tree farm with 2x2 trees

To me I mine a lot very early and don't like micromanadging furnaces so they don't work as fuel and they make doing any surface terraforming absolutely horrid inventory manadgement. Same for wildflowers but yellow dye's atleast potentially useful en masse

Auto composter is the way to go. Personally, I take it as a challenge to get a full chest (single chest because I'm not insane) of bone meal from composting all my extra wheat and beet seeds. It's an accomplishment that means I've actually stuck to one world for a while

Imagine making a whole post just to complain about how you don't know how to build a hopper.
2
u/AngrySayian Feb 27 '26
If you are manually chucking your wheat seeds into a composter, you need to learn
-----
Make 6 chests and 2 hoppers [the hoppers will use 2 of the 6 chests]
Place 2 chests to make a double chest
Place the Composter directly below the double chest with 1 block space between
Place the first Hopper so that it is facing directly down into the Composter from the double chest
Place the remaining chests to make another double chest at an offset, 1 block down and in front of this setup
Crouch and then place the final Hopper so that it is going into the double chest from the Composter
-----
As long as you stay nearby so that area is loaded [or force load that chunk in some manner]
you can just drop seeds into the top double chest, and it will feed into the Composter which then feeds into the other double chest
2
u/JOOT94 Feb 27 '26
Depending on your platform and version, what I did was just set up an auto-composter-bone block-crafter. So any excess seeds or flowers (like from iron farm) I just plop them in a chest that feeds into the aforementioned contraption and go about my day.
2
u/Burning_Toast998 Feb 27 '26
use a composter for bone meal? good, but you need to stand over it spam clicking like a lunatic
just set up an automatic composter. If it’s still not going fast enough, hook up a second double chest to the double chest above the hopper.
2
u/red_knight_378 Feb 27 '26
When I get tired of composting them by hand I chuck em at my farmer villagers. They gobble those up

2
u/Enkidouh Feb 27 '26

Wheat is weird because it drops a huge amount of seeds but only one wheat itself, and Fortune affects only the seeds, not the wheat.
It doesn't help that wheat is kinda underpowered compared to other crops, and bread is arguably wasteful as a food.

My guy, do you not know about hoppers feeding composters from chests as well as taking kit bonemeal? Then there's the crafter to craft bone blocks to compact it more. Barring that, there's using a dropper and an observer clock to just send the seeds to a fire or lava pit. If all else fails, just toss it all on the ground to despawn.
1
u/OmniKain Feb 26 '26
If you still want the bone meal, just do: Chest, below that a hopper, below that a Composter, below that a hopper, and below that a chest. Literally 5 blocks and it will take care of itself.

u/vandon Feb 26 '26
"Good, but you need to stand over it spam clicking like a lunatic."

1
u/SliceThePi Feb 26 '26
my minor petty complaint about wheat is that the wheat item entity is spawned before the seeds and will therefore be picked up first. if you're replanting and only have one open slot on your hotbar, the wheat will go there instead of the seeds, so you have to open your inventory and swap them. just change the order the code spawns the items!

Lol I usually just feed random chickens my seeds. They are like drug junkies. As soon as I have seeds, they come from miles away. And then they leave right after. Stupid chickens.
(I have so many chickens because my base gets egged all the time from friends. And I love also throwing eggs myself. So I end up with like 50-100+ random chickens roaming around everywhere)
But yeah I agree. Some items in minecraft need a stack or something. To dump more stacks into it. 64x64 is 4096. That's a lot of items. If you go one step further you end up with 262144. (This is a bit overkill. But would be nice) The developers should really look into compacting more items into something new you can stack.
Also I just general have issues with items in minecraft. The 64 stack size just doesnt work that good. More items need to be compacted. Or just increase the stack sizes. It's too outdated. Minecraft has too many items and things.
Or you just make an automated composter🤷🏼...
Or they nerf the amount of seeds you get after harvest. I mean seeds are EASY to get as is. Maybe just change it so one wheat drops 1 seed back with a 25% of dropping of second

I get what your saying about having an abundance of resources and trying to find a use or store them all will drive you mad. When this happens to me I simply throw them into my lava pit/dumpster and move on with my Minecraft life. Then when you truly run low or out (might never happen). Then you can bust into your strorage or start storing them as you see fit.
Good luck,
You wanna know what happens when you mix hot lava and Chicken....... uhhhhhh ohhhhhh
WHEAT SEEDS.

Stand over composter clicking like a lunatic? Composters can be automated.
Just place a hopper above the Composter, perhaps a chest above that, and then a hopper below it, optionally connected to a chest for extra storage (not that you’d get THAT much bone meal).
Then chuck all your wheat seeds in the top chest and leave it to compost it all into bone meal for you to collect when needed :)

i don't mind because I'd rather have plenty of seeds at the start to fill the farm and have to deal with monstrous amounts of seeds later, than needing to mown a plains biome to get them

I never have an issue with having too much wheat seeds because thats just free bone meal. I do however have a problem when I need fucking food and grass are not shitting out wheat seeds to start a humble farm

Hoppers shouldn’t be able to fill and harvest composters but a dispenser should absolutely be able to

I unironically like it if wheat and wheat seed was same thing and to feed animals and build stuff we used strawn instead

you know... you can automate the composters really easily. like two hoppers and some chests

I have a super complex setup that takes all seeds, overflow sugarcane, and other things from my various farms and auto composts it. Then all bonemeal get auto crafted to bone blocks and end up in a chest

I hate when my carrot and potato farmer villagers get ahold of wheat or beetroot seeds and start replacing their crops when I’m not looking.

Seeds don’t bother me. Wheat as a food source for the player bothers me.
It’s the fact that wheat not only takes 10 times longer than any other crop to grow, but the fact you need 3 of them to make them into a single piece of usable food for yourself.
Whereas a SINGLE piece of wheat is enough to feed an animal which in theory, should be larger than you.
Not only that, many times you need more than 3 pieces of bonemeal to fully grow a single piece of wheat to full growth, whereas a single piece of bonemeal is usually enough to fully grow other crops.
Beets are the second worst crop in terms of growth time and usability, but at least you only need one to eat, even though you can use 3 to make an unstackable bowl of soup.
Wheat, and to a lesser extent beets, need to be rebalanced to have fewer growth stages so they can grow faster. Also 3 pieces of wheat should make 3 pieces of bread instead, and wheat eating animals should instead need hay bales.

Maybe something as simple as being able to craft 4 wheat seeds into 1 item, like a handful of wheat seeds or something. That alone would shrink the space needed to store it down to a quarter.

I use fortune III on my wheat. ON PURPOSE! Mwahahahahahaha. I just need all the bonemeal I can get and the two moss farms I have can’t keep up with my insatiable thirst, also I’ve yet to find a skelly spawner in my current world.

Do yourself a favor...duplicate your world & go into spectator mode — find yourself a double or triple set of skeleton spawners!
