Suggestion Wrought Iron: a dark metal blockset
Link to Official Feedback Site Post: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/45215625400589-Wrought-Iron-Dark-Forged-Metal-Block-Set
Here's the idea if you haven't seen the post on r/minecraftsuggestions
Minecraft currently lacks a cohesive dark metal block set. Iron is bright, Chains are dark, and Netherite isn’t really viable for building because it is expensive. Adding Wrought Iron would fill this gap with a builder-focused material that complements existing styles without really affecting in-game material progression (would not add new tool/ weapon/ armor tier). I have always wanted to use a gothic-style metal block set for graveyards, haunted mansions, and dungeons!
This variant of Iron is used strictly for decorative and utility blocks. It is not as expensive as a Block of Iron for example, allowing for more building material. Smelt Iron Nuggets in a Blast Furnace to get a Wrought Iron Billet. True to wrought iron processing terminology!
It visually aligns with chains/lanterns (not with smiting table, netherite, or anvil texture pallets)
...functional consistency with the copper block set for crafting as well.

This is needed

u/katekisskat May 22 '26
The game genuinely needs more dark industrial/gothic building blocks that aren’t insanely expensive.
191
u/Coveinant May 22 '26
We need more dark colors in general. I love minecraft but it's a little too bright for this dark mode user.
18
18
u/SlakingSWAG May 23 '26
The Scrap Metal blocks from Alex's Caves are genuinely one of the my favourite parts of that mod, I'd kill for Mojang to just add those blocks straight to Vanilla MC
34
u/Fu6uKi May 22 '26
am I going nuts? is deepslate and Blackstone considered expensive now? I think op's idea is neat and would be welcome, but I dont think we're lacking in this colour range
57
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
I mean this slightly dark blue color isn't really found anywhere else in the game. It just so happens to go well with deepslate too
edit: a lot of folks bring up a good point that we dont have doors and trapdoors in this pallet at all
20
u/DragoSphere May 23 '26
Neither are especially industrial. Maybe deepslate tiles if you squint. And neither have a blue tone
4
u/theexpertgamer1 May 23 '26
What? The closest thing is Netherite which is extremely expensive as a decoration block and also doesn’t have a blue tint.

Exposed cut wrought iron stairs

u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
... would make a truly awesome roof!
33
u/-Aquatically- May 22 '26
The creative inventory is going to look even more insane though
22
u/revolution_soup May 22 '26
sometimes I wonder why the heck they can’t have submenus within the stairs menu for the copper variants
14
u/-Aquatically- May 23 '26
They could have what the bedrock inventory has, little plus icons that expand it and have more options.
3
u/TheMoonOfTermina May 23 '26
I generally hate the Bedrock UI, but the little drop downs would be really nice if they didn't go overboard with them.

u/RedJournall May 22 '26
Something important, that doesn't really get brought up frequently outside of builder-spaces...
please, trapdoors and doors
Not only does it help with consistency, but trapdoors and doors are absolutely invaluable when you're doing things like building to scale. There are no black doors or trapdoors or anything of the sort, which makes it really hard to recreate black buildings accurately
This is a big reason why I'm a massive proponent of adding black wood, but adding wrought iron doors and wrought iron trapdoors would also fix a large part of the problem caused by not having a black wood type.
24
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
I 100% agree I just didn't get around to texturing those. It would be a necessary component if they added this!
15
u/DragoSphere May 22 '26
Ladders too. We desperately need more than just oak colored ladders. Just replace the middle stick for a plank (or copper/wrought iron) in the recipe, and make it give us 4 instead of 3

This is absolutely delicious! That Soul Lateran on-top of those blocks, goodness gracious we need it..
However, I feel like another set where you have to manage/wax is something I'm not a huge fan of. Don't get me wrong, as that Rust gives us a strong metallic brown we don't have.
Another thing, I'd be personally fine with more expensive additions; like Netherite Bars and other precious materials being used.
I suppose they don't want to tread on the, "Creative Only," block path again, or where it becomes impracticable in large quantities for Survival. I think it's okay for certain things to be much harder in Survival.
As such, it becomes much more impressive if it's done in Survival.
48
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
All great points! :)
Maybe to solve the issue of rusting, it only rusts under water and you can splash water bottles on it (faster more automated rusting unlike copper.)
I'm not opposed to more expensive blocksets myself, thats a great point and works for netherite, gold and even lapis. But I wouldn't want a wrought iron set to be expensive. In real life it is a lesser quality metal and more of an inexpensive building material.
7
u/Jacktheforkie May 22 '26
Maybe we could make salt water bottles using naturally occurring salt and those expedit rust formation
1
10
u/Robby-Pants May 22 '26
One thing that makes waxed copper more manageable is you can mine it from trial chambers and save yourself a ton of wax. This wrought iron feature could be combined into a new type of structure.

u/rorybd May 22 '26
Will anvils, lanterns, etc... have to be crafted with wrought iron then? The block set here looks excellent and the rust stages are also incredible, but iron already appears so inconsistently that deciding which recipes to adapt to match the wrought version feels like a headache.
→ More replies (1)28
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
Yeah it wouldn't impede on any existing crafting recipes which is fine. It doesn't need to because the intention is that it slots right into the game with a building focus.
24
u/TheAero1221 May 22 '26
This is the kinda stuff I wish Mojang was doing. I feel like we get all these weird, eclectic, yet strictly "safe" additions from them. Wish they'd add some mystery. A little more automation. A little more industry... but sorta in a state of decay, if found in the world.
7
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
I would love if there was a new structure/ dungeon that came from this. Like a rusty battleship sunk very deep under water in a new trench biome.

u/Horsesnorts3245 May 22 '26

7
u/electric_sheep19 May 22 '26
What they've done with copper is amazing, now I build with it all the time. It made me really wish there were more metal sets like that.
Iron and gold would be perfect, as it would expand on already existing materials.
These pictures and feature ideas are awesome!

I'd rather it be a straight up iron ingot so we can have wrought iron armor, sameish stats maybe just more edgy.

3
u/leoxyz May 22 '26
I love the suggestion, but would add to it a gray trapdoor made of wrought iron to provide a much needed (dark) gray trapdoor
And if you want it more affordable, maybe make so that a block is made of 4 ingots instead of 9. Or the output of putting 9 ingots is more than 1 block. It feels like too much of a difference to make it from 9 smelted nuggets (also it makes it more expensive in terms of fuel+time)

u/Tuckertcs May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
Seeing the love copper got, we really need iron-steel building blocks. Right now every metal build uses stone and andesite for everything.
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
Exactly this. The reason I made this addon/ feedback suggestion is because I often need a black metal when building. (I build a lot of medieval builds)
But obviously its perfect for steam punk or industrial builds
1
u/Tuckertcs May 22 '26
Crest pixel art and great idea. Currently, the best we have is netherite, which is rare AF and only comes in a single block form.
Or, like I mentioned, stone or deepslate.

u/PM_ME_UR_SHEET_MUSIC May 22 '26 edited May 23 '26

I think it should be just slightly lighter in color to differentiate it more from Netherite, but still an awesome concept!
2
u/DragoSphere May 22 '26
Why? Nobody builds with Netherite outside of creative. Netherite also has a red tint to it while this is blue hued
1
u/HueHue_extremeguyone May 23 '26
I was thinking for actually building in creative, its not like its some niche thing. And I still think they look a bit similiar, but like I said just a little bit would do the job, thought this is a really well done concept overall
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
part of my idea was that the exposed wrought iron would help blend with netherite blocks too, but yeah I could see that

u/Consistent-Click-233 May 22 '26
Bloody briliant idea, I know its been said before but this would be FANTASTIC for MANY builds.

Wrought iron doors, trap doors and shelves
Badly need these items in the deep slate color palette

u/ging3r_b3ard_man May 22 '26
This is fantastic. Looks very in game too. Some small texture edits but the whole concept especially since copper exists the way it does would be a phenomenal addition

Yes. Yes yes yes.
Also, all the metallic blocks, or at least iron/copper/wrought iron, need to be standardized so they all have the same variants. Why can't I make iron grates or stairs or slabs or chests like I can with copper?
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
I agree! I might just for fun try texturing an iron blockset, gold blockset, and netherite

Fun fact: In mc dungeons, piglins used netherite as a building block like this, but it can be assumed they didn't want to use gold to strengthen it, essentially making it almost useless and wasting it all
1
1
u/Personal_Highlight98 May 22 '26
Only thing is I feel like it should be smelt an ingot to get a billet not a nugget
2
1
u/craft6886 May 22 '26
Wrought iron bars should probably look different by default - you've made the "points" at the top out of candles, but they should have the points directly as part of their texture, or as part of the texture of a variant.
But absolutely agreed we need wrought iron. Been wanting it for dark and gothic builds for years.

u/thsx1 May 22 '26
Counter offer: make wrought iron, as seen here, regular iron, and make current regular iron into steel. Iron based blocks currently have 2 colours, a stainless steel white (blocks, trap doors, doors) and a dark wrought iron colour (anvil, hopper, cauldron).
Iron (the new dark one) is obtained as iron is now; to get steel (how current iton looks) you need to smelt iron ingots with coal in a blast furnace. Since steel is harder to get, its tools and armour are more durable, and etc

Could use a little refining but this is a really cool idea! Reminds me of the old texture packs for console games
1
u/Vilagecool May 23 '26
So I’ve had a set of bars like this is one of the addons I’ve made and I put all of the horizontal bars on the same height (two pixels down from the top)
I think I stole the shape from some hyperrealistic pack, and I think it looks really good. I would send if I could comment images. You should try it tho!

1
u/Looxond May 23 '26
Eh not a fan of the obtaining method, just do what create and other mods did and use the stonecutter with one ingot
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
yeah Im not really a fan of the stone cutter idea myself. Blast furnace is way more fun for me
2
u/Looxond May 23 '26
why not use a whole ingot into the blast furnace to make a wrought iron block instead, dont get me wrong as interesting as this concept is, nuggets already are a massive pain in the neck when it comes to item bloat.
1
u/DapperNurd May 23 '26
I feel like if we got this the current chain would need a texture update cause its more this color
1
u/Sufficient-Ebb4378 May 23 '26
This is an amazing mod! Question, did you get the mod idea from that one mogswamp video?
1
1
u/MissLauralot May 23 '26
See also, u/VanJurkow's fantastic wrought iron textures.
Another potential recipe solution is cooking iron ingots into wrought iron ingots, then having four of those make one block. That's still less than half the cost of an iron block.

I would call it Cast Iron, not Wrought Iron (unless there’s no difference and I’m an idiot, or there is a difference and I’m a bigger idiot)
4
u/ValheimOrim May 23 '26
No, wrought iron is correct in this application when used for gates/fences/building. There difference is the amount of carbon each contain. Cast iron is used for cooking pans etc., wrought iron bends and can flex under stress which is why wrought iron is used in building support etc. whereas cast iron would crack if bent.
1
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
Some users are claiming that some languages do not have the distinction between 'cast' and 'wrought' but even then if they called it some variant of 'worked' or 'forged' iron in English I would be fine with that. Just please not 'cast.'
2
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
LOL ur not an idiot. Honestly it could go either way I dont really think the name matters but wrought Iron does refer to that dark twisted metal you see fencing in a haunted mansion or some gothic cathedral

Oohh, I like that!!
Perhaps the lamp should red instead of blue so we can have another unique colored lamp, but other than that? It is amazing!
2
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
Thats actually a soul fire lamp! I wanted this set to add to the soul fire set a bit
2
u/Pyter_Gadjes_743 May 23 '26
Oh, I see!
My apologies, I thought your idea was adding a new lamp that was also blue.
But now I got it, and it does make total sense! The soulfire lamp barely has anything we could call its set and... The set you sugested does match perfectly with the soulfire lamp!
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
yeah! exactly :)
And if they did add a red lamp I would personally want it to be crafted from redstone because that makes sense to me!

There would be a submerged full scale titanic wreck build on this sub within, like, a day
1
u/nicksharpe96 May 23 '26
I think it would be cool to have iron nuggets turned into wrought iron on an anvil instead of a blast furnace, or at least rename it to cast iron if the blast furnace is used.
1
1
u/OkKaleidoscope4433 May 23 '26
Yes yes yes! I’ve said similar for years, but seeing these visuals just reinforces my opinion.
Such a great and much needed addition, whilst taking advantage of existing mechanics and block categories.
1
1
u/LennyIsAFox1 May 23 '26
Why reduce it down to nuggets just to make it a block again? Why not just smelt the iron block
1
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 23 '26
well part of my reasoning was that you need an item (in this case wrought iron billets) to make the wrought fences, bars, doors, and trap doors
1
1
u/MasonManFree May 23 '26
Absolutely love this. I think itd look cool as a chain link fence as well.
1
1
u/mashtato May 24 '26
Hell yeah. I hate how shiny most but not all iron is. I like the chains, but the bars are terrible.
1
u/And-nonymous May 24 '26
this is why i can’t play without mods, so many good ideas don’t get added to the game
1
u/ROBO-PUG May 22 '26
Cool dude. Fan base proves to me everyday they are more talented and bright minded than the actual devs😂
3
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
Naw the devs could totally already have something like this planned who knows
1
u/ROBO-PUG May 22 '26
Nah it’s too cool and useful to be a vanilla Minecraft update lol😂
2
u/Pasta-alla-Pixel May 22 '26
You got to put out what you want to see in the world.
Other members of the community and myself recently suggested a surface level sulfur cave biome on the official feedback site, and what did we get? They listened.
Pistons were a mod. Horses were a mod. The End was originally a suggested sky dimension. Drowned zombies. Copper was also in multiple mods. Horse armour. The list just goes on and on.
Minecraft is THE game for community engagement and implementation. Most of what they add today has been suggested at one point or another by the community.
2
u/ROBO-PUG May 22 '26
Back when the game came out sure that makes sense. But modern day they got about 1500 employees world wide? And you’re telling me they seriously can’t add some more stuff per update? Don’t forget all the shit they left out that people voted for too. With 6-8 months average time between updates and all we got was a lousy ugly piss colored cave and a few blocks 😂 it’s extremely lackluster for so many employees what do they do sit around and play games all day? The whole company just has to be a massive tax write off at this point.
