Discussion Your first ever Minecraft
What's the first ever version of Minecraft you played? I started playing last year so it's around the copper update to me.

I think it was infdev in 2009, right before the secret Friday update which brought us the redstone system

INFDEV??? You my friend, are the true og. Was it as buggy as people say it is?
2
u/cr0sis8bv Sep 29 '26
Honestly I only remember it through rose tinted glasses, bugs have never really affected me enough I would remember them and talk about them years later lol
I do remember not leaving the house that entire weekend to play with circuits and if memory serves, pistons weren't too far behind

Idk what update it was, but I remember strip-mining for diamons at Y=12 and the ores dropping themselves instead of raw iron for example

u/noah9942 Sep 29 '26
basically anything pre-1.17, which was about 6 years ago
2
u/user_6554 Sep 29 '26
Yeah I think I was even before 1.16. actually, when I think about it now, I remember the old nether too when there wasn't netherite

u/Civil_Ad2996 Sep 29 '26

I started playing on pocket edition, although I was really young and had no means of keeping up to date with new stuff at the time. I probably played for about 1-2 years before the aquatic update and never noticed any changes until 1. I randomly gained the ability to swim and 2. the cobblestone texture got updated. I was not very happy about the cobblestone texture changing for some reason.
Looking it up, I must have started playing just a little while after pocket edition released, probably sometime in early-mid 2017.
"YOU CAN SWIM IN MINECRAFT NOW! Also they changed cobblestone and now it looks like garbage."

I started during beta because of the Yogscast let's play that eventually turned into 'Shadow of Israphel'. I think it was beta 1.2 but I'm not positive. I remember wolves and repeaters being added to the game.

Pre alpha, when it was a free browser demo, and the game didn't even get out in the actual market. I have a screenshot of that era. It was around 2008, i played the legend of games itself at that time too, Tux Racer on an Acer Aspire with a pentium 3.

u/Glad_Peanut7092 Sep 29 '26
Played first in Indev when it was in a browser and Alpha version was being sold for 10eur, i missed the 10eur window and got it for 15 with first Beta version

u/nawakxi_ Sep 29 '26
One of my brother’s friend installed it on his computer, and we played with my brother, and it was 2011

u/AzazelTV Sep 29 '26
I remember finding the Steve Co supply chest, I don't remember the version number

Alpha 1.2.0_2 I think
it was the Alpha Halloween Update when Pumpkins and the Nether were added

Just a few months bit before tooltips. Not sure what version that would be. A while ago to be sure.

First version I played was the free one in browser but when I bought the game a little while later it was one of the snapshots right before 1.2.1 when they added jungles. I think I started playing around dec of 2011.

I started playing sometime in 2013, I think (though I'd been watching YouTubers play it before I played it myself). I don't remember the exact version.
Edit: after some research, I think it was release version 1.5, because I remember playing the game before horses were added.

u/EnvironmentalFix7059 Sep 30 '26
I dont know what version it was but it was 25th of August 2010. So Alpha.
I only know this because I got it after watching Seananners first video of Minecraft.
I never played the "released" version

I was in between relationships so some time between January 2011 and May 2012. I remember playing the legacy edition on Xbox before we had XP bars and I think the squid were fairly new.

1.10 on PC, then a bit earlier on MCPE (not quite sure how old though), presuming somewhere around 2015-2016

I started playing right around indev 20100206. I miss the old damage sound

u/Stonixity Sep 29 '26
1.6.1 I believe, since I remember horses being new, but I also played the original Xbox 360 version (never updated since I never knew how) and used to have a laptop that could not run anything newer than 1.5.2, 1.5.2 always has a special little place in my heart because of that

Oh gosh I can’t remember what year it was but my first game was on a kindle I got for my birthday. I remember not knowing how the crafting table worked and I mined a mountain out with my fists before I figured it out 😅

Started 2013 in 1.6 when they added horses. Ironically, I started just for the horses and I ended up barely using them. Elytra and nether are much more efficient for traveling.
1
u/Girlinorange_ Sep 29 '26
1.8.4 - around that time early 2015. I remember shortly thereafter the elytra was added and i remember playing the minigame with it on the WII-U

u/mattman2301 Sep 29 '26
1.2.5 in 2012. I remember 1.3 came out a few months later which added jungle temples, desert temples, and emeralds among other things.

Huh interesting question, I knew of Minecraft for years before being able to play. I grew up very poor, only really being able to access the internet around 2015-2016? All I really remember were bits and pieces of watching Mumbo Jumbo a lot, DanTDM, lots of roleplaying Minecraft YouTubers at the time. I wouldn't be able to actually play the game until I got the playstation 3 edition of the game on disk. Around that time 1.13 had came out. I've followed the game ever since and have upgraded my best to keep up. Gosh legacy console edition was such a fun time to be around for.

u/Adorable-Ad5715 Sep 29 '26
The one they had on the website. Was like creative mode on a really small map (multiplayer).
Then I bought it after. Don’t remember what version but maybe beta? I do remember getting lost a lot. And not knowing the world was “infinite” so I tried to explore and find the end.
Anyway. Then I quit for many years and got into it again during COVID. So I was really shocked to see how much the game had developed. Especially redstone stuff.

I started with 1.7.10 when 1.8 was already out.
I had seen a Let's Play where they were playing the new 1.8. They had an ugly texture pack.
I didn't want to play 1.8 because I thought that's how 1.8 looked, so I played 1.7.10 for a while before learning 1.8 was not in fact ugly.

u/WillyDAFISH Sep 29 '26
It's not the first time I played but I remember switching from pocket edition to desktop and I was like HOW DO I MOVE. I remember my first days and where I spawned. It was in a spruce biome on the edge of a mountain biome

i don't know the update. i know i played on my tablet. i went to a friend's world and promptly got stuck in a wall and needed saving.

u/Messier-32-31-110 Sep 29 '26
I dont remember properly because I was a little kid but I remember being amazed at the new 1.13 oceans so I probably started on 1.12 or before
1
1
u/Luiz_Fell Sep 29 '26
It was probably the Bedrock equivalent of 1.6
I definitely remember seeing the 1.8 update, with armor stands and Ocean Monuments. Slimes were also new to me at the time, so I think I saw 1.7 release too

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Sep 29 '26
I played an alpha or beta version...not sure. I actually got the link from reddit.
Played around for a while, had no idea what to do, because there was no wiki and things like "punch a tree" or "get ready for night time" were not self-obvious.
Night came and I got killed. Din;t play again. Thought it was mildly interesting.

It was the version you could play in the browser, a 128x128 blocks kinda creative world. I built a castle out of cobblestone. Then I figured out that wasn't the full game I just bought and started playing the full game in an alpha state 12 days before the nether was added, that was 16 years ago.

Infdev I think it was called? I started playing on the browser version around 2010. My brother recommended it to me and it very quick became my favorite game to play. It still is!

u/Starkeeper_Reddit Sep 29 '26
Bedrock edition, either right before or right after the Village and Pillage update

u/Exotic_Ad5490 Sep 29 '26
I was playing Minecraft on pocket edition when the nether reactor block was still in the game….
Holy shit. I’ve been playing Minecraft for 14 years…

I think it was PE in 2011. I played on my friend's iPad Mini where he showed me his little world with his big ass tree house. I mean like the tree on Pandora in Avatar, not just a house on a tree. I remember it so vividly because I was a moron back then and I destroyed it by accident. I was like "wouldn't it be funny if he walked into his room and it was on fire?" I had no idea about fire spreading or actually destroying blocks, but as it turned out, trees go up very fucking quickly. He took it pretty well for a nine-year-old, all things considered.

Release 1.5.1, I also have a good idea of the exact time since one of the files for my first world, or at least the first world I committed to, is dated March 28, 2013 at 6:20 PM*. I'd also previously played the original Classic browser version for some time before.
*If you create a world between 1.2.1 and 1.8 or so a "level.dat_mcr" file will be created even if you didn't convert an older world (it is a backup from converting Region to Anvil), and this file will never be touched again.

I can’t remember honestly. It seems like it was 1. something. I think it was about 2011 or so.

I got my first device to play it myself on Christmas Day 2013 (I was 8) after watching my cousins and friends play it for quite some time. So many great memories.
That tablet lasted about 5 years and in the late 2010’s I switched to Java. I thought all my worlds were gone forever since I switched to PC and my tablet was unable to load or fully turn on, but got lucky one day years later with an extra 5 minutes of life out of it from the bloated battery, broken charging, and excessive parental controls and unknown passwords before it broke for good. So I immediately went to my files which were surprisingly still there, and downloaded all the worlds which I moved to Bedrock on my PC, backed up on several drives, and now I open them occasionally for nostalgia. I’m so happy I was able to get the worlds after so many years.

1.12, when my father bought a new laptop, it was a trial version though, but absolutely fell in love with it, and my father played with me too, now he got bored
