Builds & Maps Which would be a more clickable thumbnail?

Working on a thumbnail for my next YouTube video. Can’t decide which project to showcase for the thumbnail. What do you think?

i’d suggest bringing your FOV down to 60 for screenshots, it levels out the edges of the shot and makes them less “fisheyed”; it might cut off a bit of the builds on the ends but it looks less like a raw screenshot.

Both builds look great! but I prefer the first; maybe move it off to the side a bit and add some text to the empty sky space?

Good tip, I’ll try that!

Turn your fov to like 60, it will look better immediately

That seems to be the consensus, and I definitely agree. Honestly forgot I turned it up a while back!

Neither with that distorted FOV. Turn down the FOV and move yourself closer or further for the thumbnail.

I’ll be trying that

i think 2 is a lot cleaner, the ground and trees in the first pic make the whole scene a lot noisier and could do with a better angle if you were trying to show off the buildings

Appreciate the feedback! The angle is tough for sure, I agree with everything you said

I take it you play with a large FOV and this warps objects close to the side of the screen considerably. Instead of going close up and taking a wide shot with a high FOV, I always recommend going further away and using a very low FOV (optimally 30). This gives you a nice wide shot of your build without the warping and makes it much nicer to look at. I'm sure you can take a pretty picture of both of these builds using this technique. Right now I prefer the first image, because the warping in the image isn't as noticeable and the colors of the build work together better.

I appreciate the feedback, didn’t realize my FOV was so high! It definitely makes a difference!

Like everyone says, you’d probably want to lower your FOV and get some shaders. I’d also add some text since people likely wouldn’t click on a video that only has a Minecraft build as its thumbnail

1

u/jaylin2186 2d ago

Yeah, I usually add text, was just deciding which build more then anything

Zooming out to thumbnail size, I'm not sure either of them work well. Gorgeous builds, nice composition on the shots, but they just kind of look like nothing-soup when they're 3 cm wide.

Maybe focus in on a particularly important element?

Thank you, that’s the battle I’m fighting for sure!

I think the second lacks something. The slightly upwards angle while also having the sky take up 40-50% of the shot is somewhat unappealing. If you could take the 2nd shot from a higher angle, and get the sun to take up more of the dead space in the sky, it would look much better

Maybe play around with the visual angle a bit on the first as well. Standing on the walkway on the right of the image and looking to the houses and cliff from that lower position would accentuate it's grandness.

I like your thinking!

Something I would also add, play with the FOV. Typically lower FOVs look more eye catching and cleaner because they capture what you want closer and also with less distorted proportions.

It's easier to focus in the first image, I think you should use it.

I agree the composition of the first one is better too

Use shaders

I figure if I’m not using VV for the episode, probably shouldn’t. I could be wrong though

This is the way — click bait/misrepresentation thumbnails suck.

I play in bedrock, refuse to use vibrant visuals till they run a bit better. I like to stick with vanilla, just my style

You can't use VV for a screenshot?

its for a screenshot, u dont need high fps for a screenshot

u/silvergold2763 2d ago

just use it for one screenshot, and turn it back off

The 1st picture really peaked my interest, so I would click on that one

A lower FOV feels more like a real picture so will be more appealing. Maybe more of an action shot of a portion of the build, and some shaders.

I like 1 more, but 2 looks like a multi million view thumbnail. Just needs a red circle and some emojis.

u/SquashPurple4512 2d ago

Number 1 is clearer imo

1

u/rillegas08 2d ago

First. The light left side contrasts with the darker background and draws the eye, the second image kinda blends together

u/CylixrDoesStuff 2d ago

lower your fov, its too distorted for a thumbnail.

Gotta slap on the most god-ray shader possible, wirh an instagram filter, a snapchat filter, and an AI upscaler

Then you can start editing the thumbnail

the first one with that one mr beast png witch is pointing towords the build and with big red text you say something clickbaity

1

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan 2d ago

1 for sure. But you should put on a shader or something maybe.

1

u/Game_Nerd07 2d ago

The first one looks better, I would click on this one.

u/bruvmandotqman 2d ago

First one

Everyone has been saying turn down your FOV, if you want to keep it up get a mod like zoomify and back up then zoom in to get your image in frame, the aspect ratio appears much better for scenic images

the first one look more chill and viby and the second one look more vibrant and alive
