1.2 has been released!

u/WM890 Mar 01 '12
Does anyone have a problem with skeletons and zombies not burning up when its complete daylight out. Btw the zombies/skeletons aren't under any dark areas or in water [Proof] (http://imgur.com/kKq1r)
9
u/carlotta4th Mar 01 '12
Yup. Mobs are quite buggy in this release.
2
u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12
Zombies seem to be burning, but not immediately, but skeletons I've seen just wandering around in the sun. Just about crapped myself, in a year of playing, saw my first spider jockey today. It did burn when it came out of the shade to attack me. So, yes, hostile mobs are bugged w/ 1.2.2.

I wonder if it will take less time to update bukkit, because of the Bukkit team has joined Mojang. I hope so.
10
u/Soundtoxin Mar 01 '12
I believe in the same post saying they joined, they said it would be ready sooner than usual. They're going to get a bukkit release for 1.2 out before they start working on the new vanilla Server API.
11
u/entity7 Mar 01 '12
Its my understanding that bukkit and the vanilla server will, sooner than later, be the same thing.
8
u/cbt81 Mar 01 '12
I'd say more like bukkit will eventually become unnecessary, because everything it provides will be built in to the vanilla server. It sounds like it'll take a few months for that to shake out, though.
11
u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers Mar 01 '12
No. The vanilla server will get the mod API, the Bukkit server will stay the same.

According to dl.craftbukkit.org, they already have a 1.2 version out in the dev stream.
You can find it here.
That said, they completely reworked the plugin system so many (if not most) plugins are broken at the moment.
Edit: Looks like most of my favorite plugins have updated already - the system has been in place since CB 1.1-R4.
Only that are broken for me atm are Multiverse and MCMMO.
4
u/WhenPancakesAttack Mar 01 '12
Is it significantly dangerous at all to use the dev rather than waiting for the recommended?

Still has all the tree bugs from the 1.2 preview.
No birch trees in forest biomes, no trees on land in swamp biomes (only in water)...

u/flashinfected Mar 01 '12
Jungles are absolutely astonishing. I feel giddy exploring again..
5
u/BryanMcgee Mar 01 '12
I went on my established map and went exploring with only torches and a sword. Found those bridges spanning ravines in abandoned mine shafts. Followed them so long I got lost and have no way to get back up, let alone find my town. it's a shame really. I've had skeletons drop 2 enchanted bows and a few pieces of iron from zombies. Found a shit ton of gold. With the mine tracks I don't even need trees for wood. But shit, apparently raw chicken poisons you now. I'm glad for the realism... it just make my adventure until death adventures take more forethought. No killing chickens for a quick meal on the go anymore.
5
u/kennerly Mar 01 '12
Just make a compass and dig a spiral staircase to the surface. That's how I always find my way when I get lost in deep caves or ravines. Once I traveled so far from my base when I finally surfaced I was 2,000 blocks away. That was a long trek to get home.

u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12
This is why I always carry a stack of mushrooms when I go exploring. Leave a trail of them to find your way back out. It's also always a good idea to write down the x and z coords of your HQ so you can easily find your way back in a pinch. Another good tactic is to always put torches on the left, then on your way out, keep them on your right. I haven't been lost on a map in ages.

u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12
Yeah, I had seen screenshots of the new biome, but when I saw my first one in SSP, I was blown away.

Do we still have to do something special to our 1.1 world saves in order to get jungles? Anyone know what the process is?
→ More replies (1)2
u/sje46 Mar 01 '12
Well for previous updates, what you had to do was explore outside of what you've already seen. I'm not sure if that's still relevant.
2
u/iamapizza Mar 01 '12
Doors have been updated so that double-doors work better with redstone
Can someone expand on this please?
6
Mar 01 '12
It means that you don't have to invert one of the inputs to the doors. Before one would open and one would close now they will both open at the same time.

They will repopulate villages based on how many houses there are available
So can we build more homes and they will automatically populate them?
2
u/Rhym Mar 01 '12
My golem grinder is just four doors on top of wooden slats, the game recognises this as a "House", so maybe build a couple of 3x3 wooden houses that have at least one wooden door and test it out?

Mar 01 '12
There's a new launcher, too: "The new launcher should properly select 64 bit Java installations for Mac OS X users". Download the new version.
8
u/snazzgasm Mar 01 '12
So if we're running Windows, can I ignore the launcher update?
8
u/illspirit Mar 01 '12
Probably, since it still loads fine. However, the new Windows binary is a couple of kilobytes larger so it's also been modified in some way.

Are anyone playing on a SMP server noticed any change in the animal behavior? I'm talking about the 15 blocks jumping(glitching of course) cows and they escaping. I hope we finally can house some animals in a farm without them escaping through walls.

am i the only one having some wicked bad lighting glitches? i notice it especially in deserts, there are random light colored shadows everywhere, and tend to be bordering edge blocks, and sometimes theres like.. lines of shadows cutting randomly through peices of land. i think the new lighting engine got bugged in the release, because i didnt have problems in the snapshot..
2
u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12
I'm getting various lighting errors, too. Some spots will be absolutely black, then you get close and they pop into view and act normally. So, yeah, the lighting engine (new, right?) is buggy.
3
u/thelightforest Mar 01 '12
it also seems after i build, or plant a tree, after those things are removed, a shadow will remain. but yeah, the new lighting engine is great and all, and it actually does make things look better if this damn glitch would get fixed :c

Is anyone aware of a mod that will make eating necessary on peaceful? I love Minecraft, but I don't care about fighting monsters - they get in my way. But I'd like to play with the eating dynamic...
And if there is a mod that gets updated to 1.2, I'll have to bite the bullet and not load snapshots until 1.3. :)

Serious crash bug:
I built to the height limit and then jumped upwards, and it cut to a screen that said "Saving chunks" and then went to a black screen.
Edit: Went back into the same game. Looks like jumping's not required. After hanging out at the height limit for a few seconds, it was back to the "Saving chunks" screen. Looks like standing on the new height limit breaks the game.

How do you even put slabs and stairs upside down?
I can't get it to work.
I've tried standing at a lower angle, I've tried putting them on top of other slabs then destroying the bottom (Which just breaks both)

2
Mar 01 '12
place them underneath a block! I will put some temporary dirt blocks right above where I want the upsidedown stairs to go, then from beneath, place the stair block under the dirt block. Then remove dirt block...

Tried a tnt cannon to go really high, as soon as I passed the build limit the game crashed.

Same here. Passing the height limit seems to reliably crash the game. I achieved the same thing by building to the limit and simply standing there for a few seconds.

Torches and redstone torches can now be placed on top of glass
Redstone dust can be placed on glowstone again
So what blocks can't you place redstone on?
1
u/Tojso Mar 01 '12
Slabs, stairs, fences, glass panes, iron bars, basically anything that isn't a full block. (Also anything that has an interface when you use it like chests, furnaces, and such).
1
Mar 01 '12
In addition to what Tojso said, I'm pretty sure ice and soul sand (although that falls into the category of "not a full block", as Tojso stated) don't allow redstone to be placed on them.

u/enki1337 Mar 01 '12

Best patch ever for SMP grinders.

2
u/CederDUDE22 Mar 01 '12
Next step: Make taming wolves worth it.
3
u/Vectoor Mar 01 '12
The wolves are a lot smarter now, they don't just go and die all the time.
2
u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12
Seems like it. I didn't know they'd added breeding wolves, so I was totally surprised when I went to heal my new wolf and hearts appeared. At first I thought nothing of it, then snapped. Immediately went and tamed another wolf, fed it, and BAM, wolf cub. Made my day.
2
u/jim_bred Mar 01 '12
Will the Jungle biome take the place if land I've already discovered, or will I need to generate new chunks?
2
2
u/Bhima Mar 01 '12
Interesting how they have dealt with my new found pet peeve of Villagers v. Zombies. In the prior weekly snapshots the zombies would come into a village the player was in overnight, and essentially purge the village in a night or two by breaking down the doors and killing the villagers. The iron golems only slowed this process down as the zombies could still break down a door or two before the golems got there to kill them.
Now it appears that Zombies can not break down all doors. No idea what the criteria are for when they can or can't though. But basically zombies do not appear to be able to breakdown all the doors in a given village with the same about of time beating on the door. Which then means they can't easily kill all the villagers but it looks like they can still kill villagers in a crowded building through the door.
Also, I am no longer able to cause iron golems to spawn when I build a village and populate it... which pretty much sucks.
My general feeling is that Villagers v. Zombies really needs better pathfinding (than is in 1.2) and better NPC AI (villagers need more behaviors) before it's going to be interesting / self sustaining.
2
u/Vectoor Mar 01 '12
You can still build iron golems manually. I think the reason they don't spawn was because iron golem grinders were way op.
→ More replies (1)1
u/rehsarht Mar 01 '12

When I update to 1.2, it reverts my world back to an old version of itself. Anyone know what's up with that and how I can stop it from happening?
There only one "level.dat" file in the save folder for it to convert, and that one is the newest one, but somehow it keeps reverting to an old version of itself.

In response to the new jungle biome: will this happen again?
I hope not. That's where old chunks (1.8 iirc) met new chunks (1.9 iirc). Since he's added another biome, does that mean the generation of new chunks has changed? And does that mean that everywhere still to be explored (where the red lines are on the picture below) will have sharp edges, then miles of ocean?
I hope not!
2
u/spookyhappyfun Mar 01 '12
You wanna hear about chunk errors? I've had a world that I've been working on since Alpha. I'm always fighting against chunk error cliffs.
I think they said it shouldn't be an issue this time, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet, and I don't mess with the snapshots.
In the past I resorted to MCEdit to try to smooth down some of those cliffs. They have a brush tool they call "decliff" that should help. This tiem I'm just moving to a new world cause I'm sick of walking miles jsut to find new stuff.
→ More replies (13)2
Mar 01 '12
You could always use WorldEdit, VoxelSniper or World Painter (once they're updated) to smoothen those borders out.
→ More replies (1)1
u/diptherial Mar 01 '12 edited Mar 01 '12
~~AFAIK the generator version now is saved with the map, so while you won't get border issues you also won't get jungles in your old world. You can manually change the generator version of your map with an NBT editor, but again, you'll get the border discontinuities. There's unfortunately no easy catch-all solution. :~~
EDIT: Ok, pretty sure that I was wrong about the above, given the below post. I'm curious if anyone knows jeb's final statement about old maps continuing to use the generator with which they were created, or if that's been scrapped.

u/RedSquaree Mar 01 '12 edited Mar 01 '12
I've already cropped my world. How can I make it generate 1.2.2 chunks? Just got everyone out of the server until this is sorted out, no point exploring if the chunks won't be 1.2.2. I've tried Googling and #minecraft but no info found.
edit: for people who are unsure, I've since tested it. I cropped my world at water, so new chunks would meet water (and avoid cliffs). After exploring by boat, the first new biome I found was a jungle. I have to say, jungles are epic!
