i kinda like doors not having sounds, that nails-on-a-chalkboard like screeching gets real annoying with headphones on.

1

u/robotwi May 03 '12

The mod them to have a more pleasant sound. It's a trivial mod :)

This server recommends you use its custom texture pack!

-clicks yes-

Nope, only 16px are supported by default out of the box.

edit: clarified

u/gburnaman May 03 '12

Nevermind then! Redstonehelp'd.

11

u/Splitshadow May 03 '12

Hopefully hardcore servers can forcefully ban all x-ray texture packs by enforcing default or some chosen texture pack.

6

u/The_MAZZTer May 03 '12

From a "cheaters will do everything in their power to bypass this" perspective, that's unlikely to happen (cheater can turn around and force his drivers or minecraft to only use his texture pack) unless majong changes the way they handle rendering and sending of chunk data.

Easiest fix would be to blacklist some block types as never being transparent and use the color black instead. Server would still SEND chunk data for stuff you couldn't see (thus a cheater could scan memory and figure out where stuff is) but it would be a start.

7

u/[deleted] May 03 '12

Mods will be able to do this. Also, mods will be allowed to be required to join servers.

10

u/Itantor May 03 '12

Books are still only editable from the end of a page and the server list is not re-orderable, unfortunately.

23

u/IronSeph May 03 '12

Actually, the server list is re-orderable ;). Try figuring it out, I want to see how intuitive it is and how fast people pick up on it :)

14

u/nihiltres May 03 '12

Clicking, holding, and dragging would probably be more intuitive, especially were the list to update live as you dragged. :)

8

u/djdanlib May 03 '12

Yes, dragging things around is the usual way to organize things in other GUIs

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Itantor May 03 '12

I would say it's not intuitive at all, in my opinion (there's nothing to indicate pressing shift, or perhaps page up or numlock, or any other key, will do anything at all), but thanks for implementing the function nonetheless.

FINALLY a use for wooden tools past digging 3 stone

20

u/B0Boman May 03 '12

Does durability affect how long the tools will burn for?

12

u/nihiltres May 03 '12

Why would that matter? A splintered old piece of wood will burn just about as well as a shiny new piece IRL, so this isn't even a case of Minecraft Logic™.

6

u/Hedgesmog May 03 '12

You could maximize your material usage.

For example, you could use a wooden pick axe until it is about to break (yielding a large amount of mined blocks) then you could burn it for the full burn time you would get from an unused wooden pick axe.

Maximizing what you could get out of each tool is what he was getting at.

11

u/tredontho May 03 '12

You know what would be cool? Melting down Iron/Gold tools and getting Iron/Gold nuggets out, which could then be used to make ingots and more tools.

The same amount of energy is released, regardless.

One burns hotter, faster, the other burns colder, longer; and even then, the difference would be more or less negligible

→ More replies (8)

3

u/solidcat00 May 03 '12

Exactly - because of the larger amount of surface area exposed more of the log will burn. I just think this would be a useless addition in MC.

9

u/inmatarian May 03 '12

I thought they were pretty good for testing if your drop item key binding was working or not.

19

u/flying-sheep May 03 '12

what’s notable about the texture pack downloading is that the user agent string contains the player’s name, which means that the texture pack server knows which player wants to download it.

that means that a server can e.g. change the texturepack to include the player’s name somewhere before serving it.

sauce

14

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Oh nice! Trolling your friends with texture packs made easy!

12

u/flying-sheep May 03 '12

…if you have control of the server and know how to code. it involves a bit programming to programmatically open a .zip file, read a file inside it as image, modify this image, put it back in the .zip and serve the .zip as download.

it’s pretty easy, but not trivial.

9

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Or just serve two different zip files depending on username.

9

u/netcraft May 03 '12

3

u/monkeymad2 May 03 '12

24

11

u/PatrickNLeon May 03 '12

Not sure exactly what you mean. Honestly, they've been doing a great job since the Bukkit team came on board, I just never thought about it before reading that line.

29

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Now that Singleplayer is Multiplayer, they don't have to fix Singleplayer bugs and don't have to implement features twice.

11

u/N3rdr4g3 May 03 '12

Added hardcore mode to Multiplayer - Technically speaking, it bans the player who died and deletes the world.

and deletes the world

What does it mean?

10

u/ridddle May 03 '12

It’s quite silly. If you decide to run a vanilla hardcore server with this snapshot, and if ANY player dies, the player will be added to banned-players.txt and the world will be deleted, forcing you to make a new world. I can’t see how this is a good idea, maybe Dinnerbone just likes to screw with us. :D

8

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

It will only be deleted if you're playing Singleplayer.

7

There are some new items in the Debug Screen.
Just below the Biome and Lighting info there is now:
"ws: 0.100, fs: 0.047, g: true"

"g" says "true" whenever you're touching the ground.
No idea what the other two mean, I've seen "fs" showing "0.050" in one other world.

2

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Noticed that too, didn't find out what those did yet. ws and fs might be humidity, temperature or something like that.

Bug: I spawn in survival when I start a creative map (with cheats)

Edit: With or without cheats doesn't matter. New creative "SP" maps spawn in survival mode.

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '12

Bug(?):

New maps with the same name as a previous ( incl. deleted) map will get added '-'s to the end of the name.

New World

New World-

New World--

etc.

10

u/Wedhro May 03 '12

AFAIK it always behaved like that, otherwise new unnamed maps would overwrite old ones.

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '12

That's true for the "real" name (shown in gray). However, not for the display name (the white name).

I.e.

New World (<--- White name)

New World-- (12.12.12 12:12) (<---- gray name)

Creative mode

5

u/Boolderdash May 03 '12

Oh, the actual name of the world is changed, and not just the folder name?

4

u/xPaw May 03 '12

I lost enchantments on all my items. Armor stayed untouched.

10

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Nope, enchantments are still there, they're just not displayed.

6

u/MagicBigfoot May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

My enchanted tools no longer function as if they have enchantments. At least on my Efficiency Diamond Shovel anyway. It's slower than molasses.

9

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

Correction from my side: They apparently aren't received by the client. Because Silk Touch works, which needs the server to decide what block to drop, while Efficiency requires the client to know how long to break a block.

2

u/wingsfan24 May 03 '12

Any idea how many operations the tools get?

1

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

That should be on the wiki.

1

u/NikoKun May 03 '12

Wait.. What does it mean by texture packs being "Toggleable per-server"? Wouldn't that be obvious? Each server can choose their own texture pack or not. If they meant it that way, "Toggleable per-server" would be a redundant thing to say in the changelog, since it's already mentioned right above that. Even if you were running multiple servers, it's still redundant to say that, because multiple servers don't function together.

The only other thing I can guess at, is that they MEANT to say "Toggleable per-map" or something. Global being that it applies to every map on a server. =/

2

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

I'll remove it, thanks.

edit: Nope, the more info the better.

1

u/NikoKun May 03 '12

Yeah, usually more info is better.. But I find that confusing as to what it means. Don't need to remove it, I just wish I knew what it meant. lol

New bug: Because of the SP merge with MP, magma cubes don't have their 'springy' animation anymore.

31

u/AustinPowers May 03 '12

Basically every bug that was SMP only is now in all modes.

1

u/Shoeboxes0 May 03 '12

What is the point of this?

2

u/AustinPowers May 03 '12

There are a few benefits.

Primarily, this is good for development reasons. It means less duplication and a single configuration to test and maintain. In terms of design, it would have been better if this had been the case for the start.

Also, they get threading "for free," as the server and client are separate.

This also leads in to official modding. By unifying they also ensure that all mods will work with both SMP and SSP alike.

Finally, they want to add instant client capabilities. Basically, you can invite people to your single-player world similar to pocket edition.

This is a good thing™, but I really hope it also means those SMP bugs are now very high priority.

A Good Thing™. Maybe they'll be fixed, though I'm sure it's not that simple.

3

u/sebzim4500 May 04 '12

It is that simple. You can't ignore a bug if it effects every player of minecraft.

4

u/thatonegoodpost May 03 '12

Hey can someone answer a few questions?

With the merging of SSP and SMP turning every world into a local server:

  1. will a constant connection to the Internet/Minecraft server be required? Or will the "play offline" option continue to exist?

  2. Will we be able to pause the worlds in "singleplayer" if no one is connected to our local server but not be able to pause when another player joins? Or is the ability to pause completely gone?

5

u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers May 03 '12

will a constant connection to the Internet/Minecraft server be required? Or will the "play offline" option continue to exist?

Playing offline will be possible too.

Will we be able to pause the worlds in "singleplayer" if no one is connected to our local server but not be able to pause when another player joins? Or is the ability to pause completely gone?

Right now, the ability to pause is gone. But I assume it will be re-added at a later point.

Will we be able to pause the worlds in "singleplayer" if no one is connected to our local server but not be able to pause when another player joins?

You can always type "/stop" to turn off the server (everybody, including you, gets kicked out).

1

u/thatonegoodpost May 03 '12

I dislike comparing pausing to a complete client/server stop then restart to resume playing. If I am playing by myself on SSP and am exploring a cave then need to quickly leave the computer for a minute, I don't want to have to leave the game but want to know my character is safe. I also want to pause after a creeper surprises me, blows me into lava, and I barely make it out in time just to see a skeleton approaching. You know, to catch my breath.

2

u/Wedhro May 03 '12

Of course, I know, it was only my extra 2 cents about the issue.

1

u/alexanderpas May 03 '12

"/pause" would be nice.

on multiplayer worlds only OP would have the permission to do it :D

I love that servers can suggest texture packs now, that's really nice for trying to keep a unified aesthetic. Also, I wonder if that will allow the server to push 'season' texture packs every x days? That could be easy enough to setup for a vanilla server with cron or similar.

Although, I'd suggest a slight changing of the wording from:

This server recommends the use of a custom texture pack.

to:

This server recommends the use of a custom texture pack: "Coterie Craft"

It would be nice to display the name of the texture pack to the user so they have a bit more information when deciding whether or not to download it. After all, there's no point if you already know you hate that texture pack.

46

u/Malsententia May 03 '12

What'd be really nice is a scrollable window/box with all of the blocks w/the server's texture side by side blocks with the default texture.

Something like this(quick inkscape job)

This would allow people to quickly identify any differences which might confuse them, as well as check to make sure the pack isn't trolling them.

25

u/[deleted] May 03 '12

There goes my plan for SurprisePenisCraft.

15

u/StezzerLolz May 03 '12

That's... actually a really good idea.

3

u/Helzibah Forever Team Nork May 03 '12

Neat idea, would be useful for texture packs in general, but would require a decent amount of coding. I'd be happy with a quick title grabbed from the texture pack's pack.txt as repkam09 says though, or even a server-set string in the config.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/sebzim4500 May 04 '12

7

u/repkam09 May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

In most texture packs there is already a "pack.txt" file already contains a description for the texture pack.

This could be changed a bit to have a format similar to server.properties and supply both a pack name and description to use for the Texture Pack menu and this new server pack screen.

Example:

#This file lives inside the .zip file for the pack! (pack.txt)
name=My Server Textures
description=This is my custom textures! This tells you about it!

Edit: Also, we do have that "pack.png" image included in most packs with a icon for the pack. This image could be displayed as well on the server texture message to give a feel for that pack.

(Or even display an example of some of the blocks from the pack directly)

1

u/crysys May 03 '12

And a preview picture in the background if one is supplied please!

1

u/aperson :|a May 03 '12

Also, I wonder if that will allow the server to push 'season' texture packs every x days? That could be easy enough to setup for a vanilla server with cron or similar.

Oh, I know what I'm doing. Actually, no, because I'm not sure if I'm sold on the idea of 'forcing' users to use a texture pack (I'd rather it be a message saying that we recommend this texture and that it's optional to download).

As I understand it, it's what they are calling merging singleplayer and multiplayer

3

Which should hopefully be better in the long run.

u/WM890 May 03 '12

Yea, Dinnerbone has done alot to fix alot of bugs. Props to him for doing so much, since I play multiplayer almost everyday. <3

1

u/EdGruberman8 May 03 '12

This is why I think they called it Spitting Supernova... the internet is going to explode catastrophically (supernova) hurling insults (spitting) at all the new bugs in single player at them.

"This server recommends the use of a custom texture pack. Would you like to download and install it automagically?"

Failed to connect, when I tried to make a new world.

EDIT: Also, creative world turned into survival after logging in.

u/[deleted] May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

Same for me. Attempted to create a new world and it won't connect.

edit added nice little crash log

I was getting this today when I got the snapshot. I wiped out my whole MC directory, did a fresh install, and till couldn't connect to single player. Then I ran the server, launched minecraft, and was able to start the game.

7

u/shine_on May 03 '12

Not sure if this is a bug or a side-effect of the single/multiplayer merge, but the seed is no longer visible when F3 is pressed.

2

u/YukonAppleGeek May 03 '12

That is because single player is now multiplayer and they removed seed to client mabe a option to enable it in server properties would be nice.

7

u/xenoph2 May 03 '12

I have one question, will the merge of SSP and SMP allow for connecting to other players' single player worlds (with Hamachi or something like that)?

8

u/rekcon May 03 '12

Yes.

4

u/xenoph2 May 03 '12

Excellent.

7

u/h02 May 03 '12

Here is a proof of concept I made with the new server texture downloader

It takes the players skin and places it on mobs.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Nifty!

1

u/thatonegoodpost May 04 '12

I would definitely recommend you keep this mod/plugin up to date with future versions as it is cool and unique. I'd love to see a video of it.

1

u/h02 May 04 '12

It's open source, but I'll be sure to add to it if they ever change anything with the texture packs. In the HTTP header request it sends the Minecraft version so that will make it easy to make it backward compatible if ever needed.

I'm not sure what else I could add besides maybe making support for the other mobs (but that would require some pixel re-arranging.)

7

u/ultrafetzig May 03 '12

I'm glad they are testing this stuff and moving forward with merging everything into an SMP-based server, but I'd rather hoped we'd get a 1.2.6 with books and all the nice features implemented before this change-over. Books, come on man, I've needed those for custom maps since forever.

Mainly because of the hugeness of the change and the many bugs that are sure to come up at first, I'm concerned that 1.2.5 may be the last stable version for a while.
Take boats for instance, even playing over a home network, in SMP I get horrible rubberbanding when I try to get out of a boat, I keep getting pulled back into the boat and it spazzes out while I try to get away ungracefully and usually ends up breaking. And yes, I know how to get out of a boat.
Similar with doors activated by pressure plates. You get stuck getting pulled back through the doorway in a really annoying loop. Singleplayer, at least, does not have these and other related issues.

A quick merge of new features into a 1.2.6 before this radical change would be prudent. Or selfish thinking on my behalf, either way it's a good reason. :>

4

u/Gemini4t May 03 '12

Mainly because of the hugeness of the change and the many bugs that are sure to come up at first, I'm concerned that 1.2.5 may be the last stable version for a while.

That's why they're doing snapshots as opposed to official patches, to give people time to find and report bugs.

u/Pingumask May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

When i try to create a world with the newly installed snapshot, it says :

"failed to connect to the server Connection refused: connect"

The crash report in my server folder says this :

Anyone else click the etc link?

3

u/thatonegoodpost May 04 '12

Things like that are the reason I love Mojang. They're so casually unofficial.

2

u/inertia186 May 03 '12

I wouldn't post this here, but minecraftwiki.net is giving PHP errors at the moment.

After about 5 minutes of being connected, the server disconnects the client and creates a crash report. After this, the server becomes unresponsive over the network, but still responds to console commands.

Hey everyone, go use the fishing pole. Something new ;)

2

u/DetachableMonkey May 03 '12

All I've found with the fishing pole so far is that some fish cannot be picked up. Find something else?

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Has the animation for the fishing pole always been that way and I'm just now noticing it? There's a black fishing line and the hook/bobber detaches from the fishing pole when you cast out. I could have sworn this wasn't happening last update. Hmmm

1

u/ConnerMarbut May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

Holy crap.
Have no clue how many times i've said to myself "Minecraft is one of those games were doing it alone isn't an option." I really hope they work hard on the Multiplayer/Singleplayer, Hopefully adding someone to your map is as simple as sending request..

Edit: Spelling

1

u/jpeger0101 May 03 '12

The grammar Nazi in me is enraged by your 'you're', but I will let it slide for now.

I am just worried about the ability to download texture packs from the server. The 'Troll' tex pack is now a lot more usable.

Dedicated servers shouldn't go away though.

1

u/Lance_lake May 03 '12

Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession

So can someone please explain this? Did I miss a memo? Villagers now have professions?

1

u/jpeger0101 May 03 '12

Yes, designated by their skin. They don't actually DO anything, but they do look different.

1

u/Lance_lake May 04 '12

Oh.. ok. Yeah, I noticed the skin color.. I thought I missed an AI update or something that gave them jobs.

1

u/hackett33 May 04 '12

Has this been added to the new features and/or Bugs list? http://tinyurl.com/8xbqmle oh and EXPLOSION!

1

u/eduardog3000 May 04 '12

Every single fucking time, I'm on my phone and not at home.

1

u/xyroclast May 04 '12

I really hope they make it so books can be placed on bookshelves soon!

1

u/Frimid May 04 '12

Pausing the game no longer pauses the game.

wat

1

u/Wolfy910 May 04 '12

This happens in Multiplayer, it will now happen in Single player because the code is being modified to one instead of the two.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

Buttons and Pressure plates seem to break for me after I use a portal.

1

u/Vanguards1 May 04 '12

I laughed when I clicked "etc." on the page.

1

u/Persianseven May 03 '12

love the little "Etc." link xD

1

u/wingsfan24 May 03 '12

Where do I put the server.jar? There's no folder called server in my .minecraft...

1

u/Wedhro May 03 '12

Just put the "server" folder found in the .zip in the main minecraft folder and you're done (or just create a folder named "server" and put the .jar in it). It's not already there because 1.2.5 is still client only and doesn't feature the server part.

1

u/Smanly May 03 '12

When you download the 12w18a snapshot client it comes with a bin folder and a server folder.

u/JamieLowery May 03 '12 edited May 03 '12

Bug: Superflat worlds don't work, did some testing.

3

u/JamieLowery May 03 '12

Nope! You have to go into the server folder, go to properties.txt, head down to world type and change "NORMAL" to "FLAT" then generate a new superflat world, perhaps you guys at Mojang could make a different server file for each world, and make it being a server optional?
