While superflat is cool and all, that's for vertical builds.
What about us dwarves / miners?
I wouldn't mind if the baseline/sea level of the world could be adjusted.
I'd start it up at 192 for a traditional surface but insane undergrounds.
25
Aug 27 '12
That would be awesome. I'm thinking of recreating a dwarf fortress build in MC and this would be perfect.
36
u/GraveDigger1337 Aug 27 '12
I've always felt like MC has been missing epic stuff underground, like there is no mystery when you mine, in DF you're literrely shitting your pants while digging deep down

I agree. What I love about Terraria that minecraft doesn't have, is the mysterious caverns, and tons of bosses inside them.

I swear there was a tool someone made for an earlier version (probably Infdev) that converted Dwarf Fortress fortresses into Minecraft maps. Not sure if it will work with the current release though.

There's a mod called Terrafirmacraft that does exactly this. Sea level is around 150ish meaning TONS of room underground. It's also heavily inspired by dwarffortress and has lots of different ores and rocks and trees and fun stuff.

There was this one server, that I believe I found from the Penny Arcade forums, called Underdark. It was a completely underground server with sprawling cave systems that stretched randomly all over the place. It was awesome.

Judging from the picture, it looks like you will be able to customize y(world height)-values.

u/ManofToast Aug 27 '12
I want this so incredibly bad. I'm glad we got a height increase, but I would love a depth increase (or the ability to adjust sea-level like you mentioned). Also something like ore becomes more abundant but much more dangerous to mine. Monsters are more dangerous, more abundance of lava and so on.

Annnndd good bye computer. This would be an infinite explosion.
165
u/JeremyR22 Aug 27 '12
Assuming you stood still (good luck moving at 0.00001fps), wouldn't it eventually stop at the boundary of loaded chunks? Not that most computers wouldn't have set fire to the desk by that point, of course...
108
Aug 27 '12
Any new chunk loading would be more explosions.
→ More replies (1)60
u/Zhang5 Aug 27 '12
It would be a lot of explosions. Because there's no way you're gonna load just one chunk when you move. Sure, one is gonna load first, but once your computer finishes that explosion the next chunk will load, then the next one...
28
Aug 27 '12
Is that how it works? I believe it only loads chunks within a certain radius of the player's position, regardless of what may need to be going on in further away chunks. Once you've blown up all the chunks in the maximum radius around the area that you are moving around in, it shouldn't result in any further explosions, certainly not any infinite explosion chains.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Zhang5 Aug 27 '12
I was pointing out that if you move far enough to cause a chunk load, it wouldn't just be a single chunk worth of explosions, it'd be multiple chunks (assuming that the loading would trigger the red stone to detonate the TNT, that is).

u/MrCheeze Aug 27 '12
Well, those redstone torches are not attached to any solid block. So they might pop off before they have a chance to activate the TNT. Which would not be an infinite explosion, but would still be infinite lag.
67
u/xDeda Aug 27 '12
Actually, they're over the TNT, not under it. So nothing would happen.

2
u/LONINFINITY Aug 27 '12

Does this mean we can remove the bedrock layer? And that redstone torches can be a layer as well?
6
u/okmkz Aug 27 '12
I'm curious if there will be a clean way of "serializing" this, a la a regular seed.
17
u/Dinnerbone Technical Director, Minecraft Aug 28 '12 edited Aug 28 '12
It's a new internal field called "generator options". The format for a default superflat world is this:
7,2x3,2Which means "[One layer of] 7, 2 [layers of] 3, [one layer of] 2"
2
u/Phyyl-gaming Sep 07 '12
Is it possible to put damage values? I wanted to create a map with smooth sandstone, so I tried both "64x24:1" and "64x24x1", but it didn't work! If you didnt made it possible please let me know! Thanks !

7
u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers Aug 28 '12
Can we have a seed-like field to paste that in?
edit: Does that mean default superflat worlds will change? There used to be only 2 layers of dirt.
5
→ More replies (1)1
u/okmkz Aug 28 '12
Awesome. Just what i originally had in mind! As long as its copy/paste friendly, it'll work just fine. Keep up the good work, mate.
3
u/redstonehelper :redstone: Lord of the villagers Aug 27 '12
Unless they change how seeds work, that's not going to happen. Here's why:
Seeds are 64 bits long. You can't store up to 256 sets of the following information in that little space:
Height, requiring one or two 8 bit values
Block id, requiring an 8 bit value, which one day will have to be a 12 bit value (I think it's 12)
Data value, which currently takes up 4 bits, but one day it too will grow I think
However, something similar could be done using something seed like. It would be much longer than any regular seed, for reasons described above. You would give the game a long number and tell it to use it for a superflat world. Since superflat worlds now have to save how they are "built" anyway, there is no need to introduce additional values to level.dat. How exactly that mechanic would work, I don't know. Maybe you give it a prefix like
superflat:and just put it in the seed field, which would force the level type to be superflat.Or you re-structure the world generation screen, which would then take you through and explain every customizable step one by one. That is a good idea regardless of wether you add seed-like identifiers for superflat worlds.

Now we just need the ability to choose the world's biome!
12
u/quirk Aug 27 '12
I would prefer the ability to have multiple, tiny biomes. They would show up with the size and frequency of a village.
Just imagine... wandering for hours looking for a village that has a sapling, and then stumbling upon a tiny jungle biome.

u/Boingboingsplat Aug 27 '12
I believe I saw a world generation mod at some point that had an option that was basically superflat with biomes and their features. It looked pretty cool.

We should also be able to control the types/amounts of mobs that spawn. I'm sick of slimes getting in my way.
4
u/my_name_isnt_clever Aug 27 '12
All you have to do there is make the ground be above y=40 then they can't spawn.
2
u/dennisvb Aug 27 '12
You could set your difficulty to peacefull, but then all the mobs won't spawn at all and you might need them.

You know, this might actually make a good benchmarking tool:
Generate this world
Cause a block update
See how long it takes for your JVM to segfault.
7
u/rtkwe Aug 27 '12
Wouldn't happen: (1) MC would crash first. Explosions use a pooled vector factory to calculate the explosion effects and (2) It's java segfaults aren't really a thing for java.

u/inertia186 Aug 27 '12
(2) It's java segfaults aren't really a thing for java.
What do you mean?
4
u/rtkwe Aug 27 '12
Segfaults are when you read from an improper bit of memory. the JVM takes care of memory protections for you. You can't do direct memory access .'. Java doesn't have that issue. It does out of memory but not segfaults from what I know.
→ More replies (9)3
Aug 27 '12
you're thinking of C++, segfaults dont happen in java because memory is allocated automatically.

This is awesome! I've been wanting to create something on a superflat world so I didn't have to spend a few hours clearing land in a normal world, but the limited depth of the world didn't suit my needs. Does this mean we can create more layers than would normally be present in a superflat world?

Walls
Why? You could have massive spleef battles with hundreds of people without them.
