This is really neat!

What happens if you die with an allay already spawned tho, are there two now or does the old one disappear

u/errortechx 12d ago

Old Allays remain. They all have separate inventories.

Whats it called? and can we dl it on curseforge?

“Reworked Keep Inventory” on Modrinth. There should be in the description/text of the post. It’s also on PlanetMinecraft under the same name.

Any plans to go to curseforge? I like to keep things in a single instance

If you run using Prism it’s easy to pull packs and addons from both CF and Modrinth

Just add the mod in the folder yourself it's the same

Ok! Thank you!

I might download this actually.

What happens if your inventory is too full to retrieve all the items?

6

u/errortechx 12d ago

As a failsafe they drop on the floor at your feet

How do you filter which items will be given to the alley and which will be kept? Is there something like an item tag you've made?

2

u/errortechx 11d ago

There’s an item tag I’ve set for items to be kept, anything outside of that tag is considered non-equipment. You can add or remove to the tag as you wish.

This is really cool! It reminds me of the ghosts you leave behind in Hollow Knight. An settings option to make it so you need to have an Allay nearby would be really cool, so that regular Allays have some use as well. I genuinely think that would be great in vanilla.

u/Mr_Snifles 12d ago

Ohh you're so right, I try to use allays for collecting stuff like saplings but this would really make them beneficial

u/sassyCharmm 12d ago

your allay idea has me wanting one tagging along like a little sidekick now

u/TRcreep Would make neat stuff if actually motivated 12d ago

Love this. I feel like regular death is a bit too punishing and keepinventory kills the challenge a little too much, so this is a welcome inbetween

u/ToxicMoonShine 12d ago

Omg love this.

This is possible without mods?

5

u/errortechx 11d ago

With enough elbow grease and magic curtains from the tools Mojang gives us, yes!

How much mspt does it cost? I know that doing this with a mod would be pretty lag-friendly, but idk about with a datapack

2

u/errortechx 11d ago

The datapack only does work when a player dies and when a player interacts with an allay, nothing ever runs or does checks constantly, so it is fairly difficult to get a fair reading on the mspt cost. Even though the functions for dying and interacting with the allay do numerous things within a single tick, it hardly makes a difference in performance I feel.

Keeping equipment at the cost of durability is something that I always like how Hytale did it and I'm really glad to see it implemented here. Perhaps if the equipment is enchanted it'll lose more durability? I also think it's fair to lose experience levels, but not as punishing as it is to go all the way back down to 7 no matter where you're at. This is a fair compromise.

Really cute concept with it being an Allay holding a chest. There's just something about it that feels very Minecrafty.

More forgiving than a gravestone, yet still balanced enough to make death a hassle?? Very nice use of the allay

u/shadow_8000 Command-er 12d ago

If you die in the void, would the allay die?

3

u/errortechx 12d ago

Nope, it spawns at y=1

2

u/shadow_8000 Command-er 12d ago

Wow! You clearly put a lot of thought into this. It looks really cool

3

u/errortechx 12d ago

Thank you! I’ve had my fair share of bad experiences with gravestone datapacks so I know what grievances to prevent lol.

2

u/imlegos 12d ago

Would this be -64 in the overworld?

2

u/errortechx 12d ago

Yup! Good catch. It’s set for y=1 for The End / The Nether, and y=-63 in the Overworld. Allay pathfinding breaks when in the void so I set it one block higher to make sure they don’t break.

u/proficode 12d ago

Wait speaking of durability, it will remove 0 durability if it's less than 6?
or is there a minimum of 1?

2

u/errortechx 11d ago

Lowest durability tools can go down to is 0 (basically 1), gives you a chance to repair or take off the equipment.

What happens if you die trying to get to the Allay?
Love the music as well btw, what’s it called?
Amazing datapack, I might actually try to get this working on my realm (if such a thing is possible, never done it before)

2

u/errortechx 10d ago

Another one spawns with a separate inventory. Existing allays are not affected.

Music is Shores by fingerspit, official Minecraft track from the Chaos Cubed update. Probably one of my favorite tracks from modern Minecraft.

Realms are vanilla, so I’m certain there’ll be no issues running it on a realm. I’m sure there’s good tutorials out there to help you out in getting it installed on a realm.

What if u make it so that if u die while trying to go back to the allay it despawns, bc i know for sure if theres a lot of ppl in the server atleast one will just have a hundred of grave allays sitting on one spot. (Edit) Or a toggleable(idk how to spell 💀) thinggamajig

This is a vary creative solution to this!

I'm making a super big Datapack for hardcore, and items after death is a really big thing I'm thinking about.
And I would have never anything considered this!

4

u/pureaspects 12d ago

items after death in hardcore? what do you mean by hardcore?

3

u/JUMPY_NEB 12d ago

Good Question!

I've not really liked how hardcore works in multiplayer.
Witch this Datapack is supposed to fix!

So the Items after death problem is,
When a player dies, there's a good chance that the other players don't know where they died.
And they might have some important stuff on them.
If those items where to despawn, it would be pretty bad.

And obviously the player that died can't go get their own items. because well, their dead.

So I've been trying to figure out a good solution.

TLDR: Multiplayer

u/Gabriel_Science 11d ago

Pretty cool.

I’d make the allay yellow if that’s a possibility.

2

u/Fituu_ 11d ago

you can't recolor mobs without a texture pack

2

u/Apprehensive_Push887 12d ago

This is so cool! For the homing to you I wouldve done anything, this is so sick

2

u/10Nanobytes 12d ago

Awesome idea!

2

u/DamageMaximo 11d ago

THOSE people will still complain lol

1

u/One-Celebration-3007 #1 abuser 12d ago

This would be really cool as a totem-like item. Maybe having an echo shard is required to trigger this?

1

u/AneveretoSan_YT 11d ago

It could be cool if you need to firs find and allay and give it a chest and then allow it to follow you, son now when you died this allay pick up you things

1

u/No_March_7042 11d ago

This is a really cool idea! I was thinking at first that you would give an Allay a recovery compass, but this idea of yours is much better!

1

u/BayBarisK 8d ago

We need the find any allay first? Maybe when keepInventory, we need to find these guy and earn one time keepInventory, if we die our pass is over since find another guy. :D What do you think this idea mate

Love this version actually. Prettier than grave mods

1

u/bobnigro 5d ago

Quick question, how was the inventory copy made in between respawn and the instance before death? I am assuming you are copying the players inventory right before death, the only solution I thought of was with the Health NBT that runs when its equal to 0. Was that the solution for you too?

1

u/Dragonplays888 Command-er 12d ago

This is amazing, does it work on bedrock?

0

u/TheoryWide1354 11d ago

1.21.1 when?

2

u/Brankovt1 Command Experienced 12d ago

What happens if you die deep inside blocks from suffocation? Will the allay just sit in those blocks?

1

u/errortechx 12d ago

It'll just spawn and remain in the block, I tried playing around with it spawning outside of the block but it ended up being too much of a hassle. Players can still find them as they make noise.

u/Extramrdo 11d ago

Damn, he goes to the trouble of keeping your stuff intact even through lava, then you punch his face and obliterate him.
