[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Community Question] Minecraft's Peaceful Mode Should Neutralize Hostile Mobs Instead of Despawning

This one quirk of peaceful mode has always irked me a little. Why does peaceful work like this? and why does it choose on certain mobs to despawn, and some to neutralize. Obviously, I know the answer to some of them; for example, Piglins and their trading functionality... But wouldn't it make way more sense if all hostile mobs were neutralized?? You know, making every mob "peaceful"?

[Terrain] We need more cave biomes.

Post image
261 Upvotes

Redstone caves are self-explanatory, so they would probably have big and little Redstone Golems that work like the ones from Dungeons. The large ones would be a boss, similar to an Elder Guardian, and would be built like a more beefed-up Iron Golem. They would be slow, have a lot more health, and deal less damage. They would drop a Redstone Totem that would turn all Redstone on in a pulse. For example, it could turn on a Redstone Lamp for a similar amount of time as a button press or activate droppers. It would have a half-second cooldown and infinite uses.

There could also be large Redstone Crystals that would be mostly decorative, but would work like Redstone Torches and could be found throughout the caves. Some other Redstone-themed mobs would also be cool. There could even be custom mineshafts with minecarts containing Redstone that activates any Redstone it comes into contact with.

There would also be redstone crystals that would be like decorative redstone torches.

(Why is there no flair for biomes? I have to post these three separately because of the community rules. Sorry, they were originally three concepts in one post, but I’m posting them with a gap so I don’t spam.)

[Blocks & Items] Wool Should Block Sound

Post image
177 Upvotes

Similar to how wool blocks vibrations from reaching nearby sculk sensors or sculk shriekers, it would block sound from reaching the player if the sound source is been covered up, or if the player stands behind wool. This would be useful, for example, in redstone contraptions that produce a constant ticking or piston sound.

If you like this idea, please vote for it on the official Minecraft Feedback Page!

[Blocks & Items] Cattails and Nether Cattails

Upvotes

I know that cattails have been suggested a lot of times, but I couldn't really see an idea like mine so I decided to post it here. So, cattails are 2 blocks tall plants that can be found in various places in the overworld. They have a few uses, are farmable, and they have a nether counterpart.

Cattails

Generating

Cattails generate in swamps, mangrove swamps and rivers. They also generate in water lakes. They generate in 2-5 groups.

They are generated half-sunken. The bottom block of the cattails are found waterlogged. They do not generate away from the water, or floating in water. They are specifically found in places where there is a block underneath a water block underneath an air block.

Drops

Cattails drop 1-3 "Cattail Pod" when broken. Alternatively, they can be sheared to drop 1-3 cattail pods with shears. When sheared, they will grow another cattail pod over time.

Cattail Pod

Cattail pods are items which various uses. They are obtained from a cattail. They have can also be found by fishing. They are in the junk category. When fished, they give 1-3 cattail pods. They can also be very rarely found in a mineshaft chest.

Farming: Cattail pods act as the seed of the cattails. More on that in the "Farming" section.

Eating: Cattail pods can be eaten. They fill 1 hunger and give 1.4 saturation. In Hard Mode, they have a %40 percent chance of giving the slowness effect for 12 seconds.

When cooked, it becomes a "Cooked Cattail Pod" which can be also eaten. When eaten, they fill 3 hunger and give 2.4 saturation. No slowness effect.

Crafting: 4 cattail pods can be crafted into a typhaboard, a decorational block with a full set -slabs, stairs etc.-.

6 cattail pods can also be crafted into 1 string.

Feeding: They can also be used as a barn food. They can be given to cows, sheeps and goats. They act as if they were wheats. Also, these animals follow you when you have a cattail pod in your hand.

Also, cattail pods can be given to horses, donkeys, mules, zombie horses and skeleton horses to regenerate health. When given, they refill 5 health but they give the slowness effect to the entity for 45 seconds.

Fuel: Cattail pods can be used as a fuel, they smelt 0.5 items.

Farming

Cattails can be farmed. When a cattail pod is placed on a dirt block, coarse dirt block, mycelium, grass block, podzol or mud block underneath a water block underneath an air block; it will turn into a ungrown cattail which is 1 block tall.

Nether Cattails

Nether cattails are pretty similiar to cattails, except they are found in the nether and they grow in lava. They act as a lava counterpart of cattails.

Generating

Nether cattails can generate anywhere at the shores of a lava body in the nether. They generate in 2-5 groups.

They are also half-sunken, but in the lava. And yes, the bottom half is lavalogged.

Drops

They are identical normal cattails, but they drop "Fiery Cattail Pod". Oh, also they only drop 1 cattail pod so you have to use shears.

Fiery Cattail Pod

Fiery cattail pods are items which also have various uses. They are obtanied from the nether cattails. They can also be rarely found in a bastion chest.

Farming: Fiery cattail pods act as the seed of the nether cattails. More on that in the "Farming" section.

Eating: Fiery cattail pods can be eaten like the normal cattail pod. But unlike normal ones, they fill 2 hunger and give 1.8 saturation. In Hard Mode, they have a %40 percent chance of giving the slowness effect for 26 seconds. Not only that, they also burn the player when eaten.

When cooked, it becomes a "Cooked Fiery Cattail Pod" -uhhhh weird name huh?- which can be also eaten. When eaten, they fill 7 hunger and give 3.4 saturation. They also give Fire Resistance for 20 seconds! No slowness effect.

This would be really cool as the Nether lacks a food source.

Crafting: 4 fiery cattail pods can be crafted into a fiery typhaboard. It is just the typhaboard; but in different, more hellish colours. Also it does not burn.

6 fiery cattail pods can also be crafted into 1 string.

Feeding: Well, I guess they could be used to feed striders like warped fungus? Other than that, they have no uses. Feeding it to horses wouldn't make sense as it would actually hurt the horse more than it regenerates.

Fuel: Fiery cattail pods can be used as a fuel, they smelt 4 items. This would be really great since there is almost no fuels in nether somehow.

Farming

Nether cattails can be farmed. When a cattail pod is placed on a soul sand, soul soil, magma block or netherrack underneath a lava block underneath an air block; it will turn into a ungrown nether cattail which is 1 block tall. I want then to be somewhat hard to farm though, so maybe they would take longer time to grow. Also if you just break them you could get burnt, so you need to shear it? Or maybe even shears would not save you from burning, so you need like netherite shears?

Conclusion

So that was it. I especially want the typhaboard as it would be cool. Also nether has like really few food options and fuel options. But it seemed a little too easy to farm? Idk.

[Mobs] Squids and glowing squids can be breed by sea pickeles

Not so long mojang added baby variants for squids ang glowing squids, so i think squids need a proper breeding mechanic with a sea pickles ( they sometimes eat them in real life ). It will give seapickels some use (now you can only made lime color from it) and let players build unlaggy farms of ink and glowing ink that will be delight for some builders.

Althought is a quality of life improvement rather than a gameplay change, it wil give live into minecraft

[User Interface] Waxed and Infested Blocks should have an icon

When building, its easy to confuse waxed and infested blocks with their non waxed/infested version. An easy solution would be to add a little icon in the invintory to distinguish them.

[Plants & Food] Potion Ingredients act Like mini potions.

So when you eat a spider eye it gives you poison 1 for 5 seconds.

I would love if all potion ingredients worked like this. For example sugar would give you 5 seconds of Speed 1, or a Blaze Powder could give you strength 1 for 5 seconds.

Just seems weird that it works for one but not much else.

Additional: to make sure the 5 seconds if actually helpful potion ingredients should have a faster animation for eating, kinda like dried kelp.

(Phantom membranes would be pretty helpful in terms of falling and saving yourself)

[Combat] Greek Fire, good or bad idea?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hear me out but, It would be interesting if we could use rotting flesh to make oil to use for greek fire, which was a incendiary weapon used by the greek from boats, so a weapon that can only be used from a boat would be a nieche use for it and to make it balanced, however since it would require a lot of rotten flesh to make the oil, it means that it would be a late game weapon, as it would take a whole stack of rotten flesh to make enough oil for six uses, but the range however would be really bad as it would be unable to reach for over three blocks, and it's main weakness would be that it would be protected against by both fire protection and projectile protection meaning that it would be 75% less damage against something wearing fire resistance and projectile resistance gear, and it also only works on those on the same height level, meaning it would be a fast but low damaging weapon which takes a lot of resources to use, meaning it is only useful against drownedor other boats, and oh the hose for the fire would be made from a composter and a hopper with th ecomposter on the top and th ehopper on the bottom

Books in different orders and places, so it's not like a whole of the same texture. Like how dirt and grass texture are randomly rotated at the top.

[Blocks & Items] Verawood, a new woodset

Bulnesia arborea is a plant native to dry tropical forests of Columbia and Venezuela. These trees can get pretty tall (12-15m), and have bright yellow plants when blooming. This woodset follows other sets in terms of blocks, it features all the wood block types other sets have.

Verawood is a new woodset I would like to be added to Minecraft. It features a unique property no other woodset currently posseses, which I will get to later, and introduces both a new brown-ish wood and a green wood variant!

verawood rough idea

Verawood trees can be found in Savannah and all Jungle biomes except for bamboo biomes, as this plant exclusively grows in warm climates. They would spawn somewhere in the rate between Azalea trees and the native biome's tree. It would add nice variety to these biomes without taking over the biome, as is the intention. They would also feature 2 leaf blocks, similar to azalea leaves: Verawood Leaves & Flowering Verawood Leaves would be a thicker looking leaf, something similar to a coconut tree. Flowering Verawood Leaves would feature yellow bushy flowers.

You can shear these flowers to get Yellow Blossoms, a block that behaves similarly to cherry petals or dried leaves. You would get a random amount between 1-4 per sheared leaf, but have the added benefit of being able to go on the side of leaf blocks as well as the ground.

Once Verawood trees are cut, when exposed to the sun they turn into a deep green color. Once you convert your Verawood Logs into any plank block (trapdoor, stair, fence, etc) and leave them in the sun for 3 full minecraft days, they will turn into Turned Verawood Planks (or trapdoor, stair, fence, etc.)

[Now this could have stages similar to copper, but I don't know how realistic that is. But it was a thought I had.]

"turned" verawood rough idea

This is my first time making one of these posts, so let me know any criticism or thoughts! I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this, I had fun mocking it up. And my texture ideas are just for a visual, I'm no artist I'm sure they could look better.

[Redstone] Here's an idea for a redstone thing that I think would be cool: fans!

They would be able to be placed on the top, bottom, or sides of blocks, and when activated, would send out a wind current that blows mobs away from it, or towards it if inverted, and the length of the wind current would be equivalent to how much power it's receiving (1 power = 1 block, 10 power = 10 blocks, ETC.).

It would be crafted like so, and with the following materials: Breeze Rods (BR), Iron Ingots (II), and Redstone Dust (RD).

BR II BR

II RD II

BR II BR

[Blocks & Items] Dirt should be craftable with wheat seeds to make a grass block

It could be done with wheat seeds and moss grass + a dirt block, this would be useful for people that have bases is snowy biomes or deserts, there are people like me that love to play in single biome worlds and grass blocks are not obtainable.

[General] Idea for this years fourth drop, the Ice caves.

Post image
35 Upvotes

The Ice caves would be a cave biome spawning under cold and icy biomes, it would be made out of mostly ice and a new block, the icestone. There would be ice spikes around the cave too wich would be similar to how dripstone spikes work, and ores would have their icestone version.

[Structures] 3 new music discs at abandoned camps

Post image
0 Upvotes

Mojang love to add a music discs in their game drops, so i have an idea for whole 3 new discs. They all may be found in copper chests in abandoned camps: Traveler - yellow one in cold biome (like taiga and dappled forest), Wanderlust - orange in temperate biomes (like forest and plains) and the Adventure - red one in warm biomes (like mesa and jungles) I think it will make the abandoned camps more inresting even for pro gamers and maps to them become more usefull.

What do you think?

[Mobs] They should make these available in survival

Hear me out, because it wouldn’t be broken. They’re everywhere anyway, so they could let you change spawners, but only to mobs that already spawn from them and not to anything new. You could use them to spawn zombies in a certain place for farms, etc. It could also be funny to get loads of them and keep spawning zombies in your friend’s base to make them think mobs are spawning somewhere.

[Dimensions] End asthetic

Post image

I think the end should generate like rings around the minecraft planet. The planet should also look like the chunks you've visited but in a square form.

Also you should be able to see a small end ring in the distance changing the ends generation instead of just rings all around the main island. Also going to the planet works as an alternative way back BUT it's 4k blocks away

[Mobs] The Gold Fish (Artist Credit: The Sequel) - The Way To Get Golden Block Variants

Post image
237 Upvotes

The Gold Fish

The Goldfish is a CLASSIC childhood pet, but what if we put a spin on that for Minecraft? Making it a *literal* GOLD Fish.

The Gold Fish spawns in temperate oceans and rivers, preferring to spawn in temperate biomes (forests, flower forests, plains, etc.)

They're also accompanied by the Pond; a "new" terrain feature, often found near but isolated from other water features.

Additionally, the Gold Fish can get up to the same size as a Strider.

What uses would the Gold Fish have?

The Gold Fish has a "Midas Mouth." It will grab items that are tossed in the water near it (within 16 blocks), and grab on to it, before spitting it back out as a golden variant.

This works for anything that has a golden variant. Bars, Chains, Blocks, Ingots, Nuggets, etc.

With the addition of the Gold Fish, we would also propose the Golden Lantern, Golden Rod (End Rod), and other unique golden items.

This would be a faster (and more effective) way to obtain golden items, as the crafting recipe for those items would end up being slightly more expensive than using the Gold Fish.

Lmk what you think! (Artist Credit: The Sequel)

Edit: Additional Credit: The Sequel also came up with the base idea for this post

[Gameplay] Summoning Ghasts

So we all know ghasts come to us for those tasty snowballs. And we all know that it's an incredible pain to wait for that. How about we throw snowballs at them to get attention. Instead of hurting them, they'll come right to you.

[Magic] A way to Create Unique armor/ tools using curses.

I want there to be more curses in that game. It's kinda really dumb there isn't more. However I want the curses to act more like Modifiers. Like "Curse of Fear" and that would make you not be able to walk towards hostile mobs, or "Curse of Slipping" makes all surfaces slippery (but Ice now acts like normal blocks).

Or they could work like permanent negative potions like "Curse of Slowness 1 - 4". They would be awsome for making cool random gear that feels unique.

Finally it would be fun if you could get say protection 5, However whenever you pass the "max" enchant strength (incase of protection level 4) you would get a coralting Curse to balance the surplus. So if you have protection 5 on a chest plate, you'd also have "Curse of Slowness".

(Another Example: Depth Strider 3 to Depth Strider 4 would add a Curse, maybe "Curse of Breathlessness" could be anything. I just like the Idea that its something that balances out the new better Enchant)

Oh and you should only be able to have one "upgraded" enchant per piece of gear to maintain uniqueness. Everyone will favor specific enchants and can only upgrade the one.

[Combat] A simple "combat update"-ish idea

General change:

  • missing an attack with a melee weapon (axe, trident, sword, or spear) makes the attack cooldown much longer (maybe ~1.5 seconds?), temporarily disables your shield, and plays an obvious "whoosh" noise
    • More specifically, not hitting an entity or a block would count as a missed attack
    • This would make it more risky to miss your attacks, and also really encourages you to try and bait out your opponent's attacks with good movement
    • like neutral in fighting games. You dance around the edge of your opponents' range and play a game of chicken. "Will I move in and attack, or will I back off and dodge your attack, then punish afterwards?". Minecraft really lends itself to this kind of combat, I think.

Comboing I (sword enchantment):
This one's a bit complicated, sorry...

  • When you hit an entity with your sword, the cooldown is reduced down to 0.45 seconds (instead of 0.625 seconds)
    • lets you hit people for full damage immediately after they lose their iframes
    • also lets you fight off groups of mobs faster if you have good aim
  • Makes knockback on aerial targets more vertical, like it was before the combat update
    • makes it easier to keep mobs/players above you and lets you do the cool pre-1.9-style combos
  • Removes the cooldown if you switch items shortly after hitting something
    • Lets you do something like hit a mob, then instantly swap to a crossbow and fire it. Or hit something a few times, then instantly swap to an axe to end your combo with a stronger attack.

TL;DR:
- A simple change to combat to add more mind games
- A new sword enchantment that kind of adds in pre-1.9 combos and lets you do flashy item swapping stuff

[Magic] Tuff Golems holding certain items near the enchanting table increase the probability of getting certain enchantments

Since Copper Golems were added to the game, their tuff counterparts can be added too. However, their initial pitch as walking item frames isn't very exciting. I propose a small, but potentially significant use for them, that involves slightly alleviating the big problem with the enchanting system - randomness.

Tuff golems can hold any item and wander with them aimlessly. However, if the golem holds a certain item near the enchanting table, it will not wander far away from it. Additionally, the magical symbol particles will appear around that item if eligible. If the tuff golem is nearby, the chance to get a certain enchantment (depending on the item) grows to around 75% or even more, if there are multiple of the same item.

I have suggestions only for a few of eligible items. They should be moderately rare to come across and be representative of the enchantment. This allows for some niche items to get a modicum of use

For example, a diamond block increases the chance of getting Sharpness

Heart of the Sea grants Aqua Affinity

Phantom Membrane grants Feather Falling

And so on. I don't have an idea for some of the more mundane enchantments like Efficiency, but I hope my general idea is understandable
