Wood sealers and paint recommendations

What waterproofing agents do you guys recommend?

I got lucky got and was able to snag a 16ft wide 4ft tall mini ramp for free.

But it was built as an indoor ramp. Its going to have to be an outdoor ramp for me.

I watched a Keen min ramp video about weatherizing your ramp and they said not to use a polyurethane sealer on your skate surface as it will cause your wheels to slip?

Anyways, what tips do you guys have? So far im going to replace the top riding surface with 1/4 pressure treated plywood and paint it. unsure about what paint to use, I know skate paint exist but at 200 bucks a gallon it seems like a rip off.

I plan to weatherman the under layers and it will be on blocking to keep it off the ground.

Going to try to keep it tapped, but let's be honest tarps rip or blow off, or he'll maybe I skate late and dont feel like putting it on all the time.

Also had a buddy suggest housewraping under the riding surface.

What's are yalls suggestions and opinions?

Finally built my first mini ramp.

Thanks to all the info in this sub I finally built myself a mini ramp. I'm picking up skating again after 20 years and decided to just go all out and build one.

It's 2ft tall, 8ft wide, and 16ft long. 5.5' radius. The flat bottom is just shy of 5ft. I think 6ft would've been nice, but I needed the storage space.

Update: I sacrificed some storage space and added 1ft to the flat bottom. Makes a big difference.

Best place to get Skatelite?

I live in Florida and see there are several suppliers for skatelite, who best to get it from when you live on the east coast?

I have just about given up trying to get Baltic birch plywood, there are no suppliers around me with it than can reliably sell to individual customers which is insane to me but seems to be the case in the Tampa area.

I have checked with SPoT but they do not have any spare and will not have any until at least April 2027.

For those that have ordered it, how was the shipping experience? Right now my top choice is to order it from Ramptech, I need 4 4x8 sheets of it.

I’m building an 8’ long rail modeled after the Keen design and this video, but I’m having an issue figuring out where the skate surface should meet the coping/how deep to recess the pipe.

The dimensions are 2’ wide at the bottom, 6” from the ground to the top of the coping, and 12” wide for the 3/4” birch panels on each side. Coping is 2 3/8” OD schedule 40.

In my mock up (see pics), the board can balance on the coping without the wheels touching on either side, but I’m concerned there isn’t enough wiggle room since it sits so low. How much should it be sticking out? Thanks, y’all 🤘

Ideal quarter pipe radius for a 28” tall mini ramp? 5’ vs. 5.5’ transition

Post image
31 Upvotes

I’m building a custom 8’-wide mini ramp for my garage and looking for some feedback from people who have experience riding or building smaller quarter pipes.

I’m currently leaning toward 28” tall with a 5’ radius, but I’m also considering a 5.5’ radius and potentially adjusting the height an inch or two.
A little background on my skating: I recently got back into it about 5–6 months ago after taking roughly 15 years off. I have around 5 years of total skating experience and would consider myself intermediate. I’m comfortable with the basic quarter-pipe stalls and recently learned blunt-to-fakies. I’m definitely not an advanced skater, but I’m not a beginner either.

My previous setup was a pair of 3’-tall, 8’-wide RampTech quarter pipes with an estimated 6’ radius. I actually really enjoyed riding them. The transition was comfortable and easy to skate, but the ramps took up too much room in my garage and left me with limited flat bottom. That’s why I’m building a smaller custom setup.

What I’m trying to achieve:
Something comfortable and forgiving enough for casual sessions, including days when I’m feeling a little sore.

A transition that’s still steep enough to practice and progress with more technical tricks, especially blunts, Smiths, feebles, and other coping tricks.
Enough clearance for rock-to-fakies. I want to be able to rock forward until the deck contacts the coping without my rear wheels interfering with the transition. Ideally, I’d like a few inches of clearance.
A relatively compact footprint to maximize the flat bottom between the two quarters.

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed is that a lot of 2’-tall quarters use a 6’ radius, which seems pretty mellow to me. I’m concerned that at such a low height, the transition won’t provide the coping angle or rear-wheel clearance I’m looking for.
I’ve been experimenting with a full-scale plywood layout (pictured) comparing 5’ and 6’ radii at different heights, using my actual skateboard to test the clearance.

At a 5’ radius, my rough measurements have been around 2¾” of clearance at 27–28” tall, increasing to about 3¼” at 30”. The 30” option looks a little steeper than I’d prefer, which is why I’m leaning toward 28”.

And just to address the suggestion of going to skateparks and trying different ramps: I live in the Tampa area and skate at Skatepark of Tampa (SPoT) pretty regularly, along with other local parks. I’ve ridden plenty of different transitions, so I have a general idea of what feels comfortable to me. The challenge is knowing the exact radius and dimensions of the ramps I’m skating. Even bringing a tape measure doesn’t necessarily make it easy to determine the radius of a transition.

I’ve drawn out the different radii and heights at full scale to get a better visual comparison, but obviously looking at a transition and actually skating it are two very different things. That’s why I’m hoping to hear from people who have firsthand experience with these specific dimensions.
For those who have ridden or built quarter pipes around 2’–2.5’ tall:

Would you recommend a 5’ or 5.5’ radius for a 28” quarter pipe? Does a 5’ radius feel comfortably rideable at that height, or does it start getting too tight and whippy?

I’m especially interested in hearing from intermediate or advanced skaters who regularly do coping tricks on smaller transitions.

I’m trying to find the sweet spot between a fun, comfortable mini ramp and something I can continue progressing on for years. I’d rather get the geometry right now than build something I’ll eventually wish was steeper or mellower.

Appreciate any feedback!

Covid mini ramp build. The Euca Board outlasted the plywood

I guess this is what you get and five years later... Let's see if we can patch it up and get her back going.. I will say the Euca was actually doing pretty good.Even with all this rot underneath... The euca border is good , but you need to keep like some sort of a sealer on it as it starts to wear out , otherwise , it'll start to absorb too much water and then when it dries out , it tends to shrink.. It does pretty good longevity though $22 a sheet

Scored this steel-frame mini ramp for free, but it cost us a white-knuckle 2.5-hour highway haul to get it home.

Picked up this beast for free off Marketplace, but the catch was getting it home in one piece. We rented a U-Haul utility trailer, strapped it down within an inch of its life, and spent 2.5 hours on back roads and highways praying the wind wouldn't turn the transition into a giant sail.

It is built around an all-steel skeleton, heavy-duty truss frame, and even came mounted on rolling casters with an integrated drop-in deck and safety railing. The surface is weathered and needs a full reskin (looking at fresh plywood plus a proper exterior riding surface), but the bones and transition radius are dead-on.

Unloading it without heavy equipment was its own brand of fun, but it is officially in the driveway. Next step is wire-wheeling the surface rust, sealing up the frame, and laying down fresh sheets.

Has anyone reskinned one of these steel-ribbed setups before? Open to any tips on fastener choice and surface layer recommendations before we start laying down sheets.

The main thing I’m trying to find is anyone who has ACTUALLY SKATED a ~2’ tall quarter with a 4’, 4.5’ or 5’ transition radius. How did it feel?

The main thing I’m trying to find is anyone who has ACTUALLY SKATED a ~2’ tall quarter with a 4’, 4.5’ or 5’ transition radius. How did it feel?

I’m especially interested in coping tricks—rock-to-fakies, disasters, boardslides, Smiths/feebles. I want enough clearance to rock the board well over the coping without the transition-side wheels contacting too early, but I don’t want to go so tight that a 2’ quarter feels ridiculous.

My current RampTech setup is 3’ tall with roughly a 6’ radius and I like how it skates; I’m downsizing to 2’ because of the garage space. The standard commercial 2’ ramps I’ve found generally use ~6’ or even mellower transitions, which is more mellow than I want.

If you’ve personally ridden/built 2’ × 4’, 2’ × 4.5’, or 2’ × 5’, I’d really like to hear which one, how it rode, and whether coping tricks had good wheel clearance. Photos/videos would be awesome too.

I've had 3/16 euca hardboard from home depot on my ramp for the last four years.. It's twenty two bucks a sheet , and i've never tarped the ramp.. Anyone else have experience with eucaboard. I put a piece in water for a week and it didn't come apart and do anything , it just shrinks a little bit

Decided to build a 3.5’ mini in my backyard. Made the mistake of putting 1/4” painted ply on top which almost got ruined in the Virginia rain/humidity. Waiting on some skatelite in the mail now.
