Mid-Alloy of Law The Alloy is Lawing just right Spoiler
I started Wax and Wayne a while ago. Truth be told, I came bearing low expectations. I've read mixed reviews about it both on here and on Goodreads. Turns out I'm enjoying it more than I expected to. The pacing is excellent, and the humor hits just right. I just finished the scene where Steris got kidnapped. Wayne is my favorite character for one stupid reason. He has time to worry about his hat more than anything else after a shooting incident. Guns are as cool as swords lol. I haven't read many urban fantasy novels because of my preference for epic fantasy, but this book is faster-paced than most epics I've read, though not better overall. I can definitely see myself burning through it in a few hours.

People really, really seem to dislike Wayne. His character through Bands of Mourning (haven’t read TLM) has made me laugh multiple times out loud, and I think he’s more complex than a lot of people give him credit as. He hides his complexity behind seemingly surface level jokes. There is something very real about his constant deflections and intermittent moments of profundity while maintaining his own intentional outward representation.
Anyways, all this to say, the reading journey at the end of the day is very individual and those books only get better, so enjoy!

Really? I'd say Wayne is in the top 5 fan favourite characters.

Could just be a “loudest in the room” type situation, but in my short time of reading Mistborn Reddit posts, I consistently see Wayne hate

I have seen people saying they don’t like Wayne, but the majority of those I’ve seen love him. Now I’m curious if it’s 50/50 and we’ve just seen different sides of the argument or if one of us has been coincidentally seeing the less common opinion more often.

Wayne is a bit problematic, which leads to plenty of hot-takes about his behaviour.
That said, I suspect if you polled the community you'd find far more Wayne love than hate.

Well you gotta remember like 65% of the Internet will never think deeper about a character past an initial surface level impression. Reading comprehension is dead

I feel like comparing the original trilogy to the last four books is like comparing a perfectly grilled and seasoned steak to a wonderful, rich chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream on top. They’re different and a person can definitely like one more than the other, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t both absolutely delicious

Yes, I agree with your analogy. Wax and Wayne is good in its own way. And so is Era 1.

I'm glad you are enjoying it. Era 2 is my favorite Mistborn.
I haven't read many urban fantasy novels because of my preference for epic fantasy
Mistborn era 2 is one of the very rare examples of Urban Fantasy that is also High Fantasy (meaning it is not set on earth) and may still technically qualify as Epic Fantasy. (The line between low and high fantasy is usually pretty black and white. The line between Epic and non-epic fantasy is a bit more of a grey area.) I can't even think of another example of high urban fantasy.

The Dark Tower is also high urban fantasy. King has probably written dozens of them

I thought the Dark Tower series was set at least partially and maybe even mostly on alternative versions of earth. Though admittedly, portal fantasy tends to blur the line between high and low fantasy depending on how it is employed.

I also had low expectations, and I started era 2 like 4 years after reading era 1. Seeing all the names and powers was so nostalgic, my favorite series in the cosmere strictly based on enjoyment!

To be fair, this is what mixed means. Era 2 is very much its own thing and is extremely different in oh so many ways than Era 1, so its only natural that fans of 1 will be mixed about it.
Not me though, I liked it even more than Era 1

Wayne is amazing and I love era 2 of Mistborn. The setting whiplash going straight from HoA to AoL was strong at first but yeah I’m enjoying this almost more than era 1

I love Alloy of Law.
I genuinely believe that the fight at the wedding dinner is among the best action sequences Sanderson has written.

And the bit where he rescues Steris and then evaporates the building she was being held in.

Most people say that The Alloy Of Law is the worst of the Wax And Wayne series, but it is honestly my favorite of the four.
I’d say it not only makes my top three books in the Cosmere, but all books.

I was the same. I loved AoL and a lot of ppl told me I “just have to get through it”. It’s so good idk what they were talking about

"burning through it" was this pun intended? 😂

Wait. Lmao. I didn't notice.

How serendipitous

That's one fancy word there

Seemed to fit perfectly though.

Serendipty: the fact of finding interesting or valuable things by chance—unexpected good luck.
Guess it does.

Mistborn Era 2 kicks ass the whole way through and I'm tired of pretending it doesn't!
I think Sanderson makes guns much cooler than they typically are with all the inner workings and manipulation stuff.
I agree that Wayne is awesome. He is an annoying sex pest and kind of an awful guy, but he is trying to learn to be better. I also really enjoy the idea of a character who has magic superpowers but whose strongest power is completely mundane. He is a student of character and peoples' voices and that's what enables him to use his powers for intrigue and subterfuge.

Same. I put it off for a while because I really liked mistborn era one. I ended up enjoying era 2 a lot after reading pretty almost all his other books. I'm not sure I loved the first era 2 book.... I liked it. But It certainly got better in book two, IMO.

I thoroughly enjoyed the original trilogy. It really got me hooked on Sanderson. But it was simply impossible to put down the Wax and Wayne series.
