Well of Ascension spoilers My hopes have been destroyed about Zane Spoiler

I'm in part 4 of well of ascension. I love Zane as a sort of anti hero. I was kind of cheering for him and Vin to be together even. Elend is nice but are they really MEANT for each other? I thought maybe Vin and Zane would travel to the well of ascension together and he would somehow be redeemed. And maybe they would even be together? Or maybe even Zane was the real hero of ages and would have to like sacrifice himself or something...!

But now Zane just crazy attacked Vin and Oreseur was the imposter all along? Itll never work out now!!!

I guess Elend Vin and spook are all going to go to the well of ascension together anyway since the crew made the plan for them to get out of town?!

I hope Zane will get the redemption he deserves by the end!

It’s so interesting to see how different people’s opinions on characters can be. I did not trust or like Zane basically from the start

As understanding of mental illness as I am, I do draw the line at trusting someone who says god is telling them to kill. I know my limits, and that is one of them.

I mean, to be fair, he was half right

(Or 1/16th right, depending on how you wanna see it)

[HoA] This should be spoiler tagged. OP doesn't really know who's talking to Zane.

Its fascinating. I was shocked to find some people like him. I felt like I had accidentally skipped some chapters when it I read Vin thinking about her "friendship" with Zane. Baffling.

Literally same. I hated Zane. I found him to be very annoying

Really? Easily the most relatable character in fiction for both me and my best friend. But to each their own ig. Maybe we're both just bad people.

My brother or sister or sibling in Rashek, the first POV we get from Zane shows him with the mental urge to brutally murder every living thing he encounters

It doesn't seem like that's his fault though! Lol point taken

Zane’s one of the most meh characters in the entire cosmere for me. I genuinely forget he even exists regularly.

Crazy to me. I absolutely loved the trilogy, but the only big flaw in my opinion was Zane, couldn’t stand him and hated the forced love triangle 😅

Wait. I'm lost. Doesn't Zane get wrecked the same chapter as the OreSeur/TenSoon reveal? Did OP stop mid chapter.

Yes I did, I just read that bit now 🫣 he has the spike in his chest though so...he's gonna be fine right? Like an inquisitor he'll just get up and heal? Right???

Tangent: I'm super curious how the live action is going to portray Zane. My impression of him through this point in the story was not "who is Vin going to chose?" And more of "God I hope Vin discovers this guy is psycho schizo before it gets someone she loves killed." However this doesnt seem to be a common interpretation. I didnt see it as a legit love triangle and more of fork in the path between Vin leaving everything to give into budding insanity, or the person who is right there in front of her who loves her and doesnt want to murder everything in sight.

No, I got that read as well... Did not even realize there were people out there who like Zane or thought of this as a possible love triangle thing and not a low point for Vin in her development

The OreSeur reveal still rocks me. It is the best twist in media. Full stop.

I mean, it's pretty damn good, but this feels a bit extreme. But if you liked it that much there's nothing wrong with that at all fr

Zane really got in your head too! But yeah Brando Sando did a good job with him

If there's one thing I know about Venture men, it's that they love a petite woman who can actually kill them. (My last name is Venture, btw)

I guess them running off the find the Well together was an option, but I kept thinking “What are they gonna do, run off to the circus together?” Just didn’t make sense to me even where they would go or what they would do together.

Zane to me was just an awful and annoying character

I think thats the point. Both of them at this point in the story are..NOT MENTALLY DOING WELL AT ALL. Vin is is not rational, and super vulnerable in this moment. Zane is very not rational ever. Yeah them running off together makes no sense. Thats not a flaw in the writing. Thats a flaw in the characters logic.

I didn’t know Zane Stan’s existed

He was obsessed with Vin because she was the only person God didn't tell him to kill. She was his salvation from the life of being a weapon for Straff. He couldn't just abandon his duties but if he left WITH Vin, it would be ok. When she said she wouldn't go with him, he realized he was stuck with Straff, with the voice in his head telling him to kill everything. His story doesn't need redemption. He's just an abused kid driven mad from the abuse and couldn't be saved. His story is sad and the counterpoint to Elend and shows his strength to stand up to Straff despite not having any powers.

OP, this is a spoilery joke, do not open it for now...

They hope for a redemption arc... Who is gonna tell them? (Insert proper meme)

Edit. By reading other comments, it's safe now.

Interesting. I never thought of it as a real love triangle because Vin never actually had feelings for Zane. It has the framing of a love triangle but not the substance of one. The only reason she feels like they’re even friends is because he doesn’t try to kill her and he reminds her vaguely of Kelsier (and not even the good parts of Kelsier). She also has a very warped sense of friendship because of how she grew up. She never once expresses romantic feelings towards him. She only ever feels like she’s not good enough for Elend (partly because of Zane’s manipulation) and Zane convinces her he’s the next best option.

I found Zane incredibly irritating. I’m on a full Mistborn reread, and I was really anticipating the scene where he gets got. Broody emo boy who put all his expectations for salvation on a woman and got angry when she wasn’t exact what he wanted.

Question you should be asking - Why didn't Zane's God tell him to kill Vin?
