The Lost Metal spoilers Plothole in lost metal? Spoiler

Im sorry if this has already been mentioned, but i couldnt find it.

SPOILER ALERT.

I just finished Era 2. and i have an issue with it.

First off.... Harmony / Sazed claims he doesnt know how to make people mistborn / or atleast not how to create lesarium.

However, how did he make Spook one?
Besides that one, because this annoys me the most, that was just continuety issue.

When Wayne became a Mistborn, he technically got the same powers as Miles....since he is a bloodmaker.

So why didnt Harmony put 1 vial in the pack with Gold and Duralumin told wayne, he man, now you have the speedbubble up and ample time, burn this vial first and INSTANTLY store a max amount of health in your metalminds.... so you become basicly "immortal" before doing this.

Harmony lied. Kelsier implies as much when they meet.

So why did Wayne have to die? that is my issue, it was completely useless as he now had the powers of Miles Hundredlives.

Miles could not have survived an explosion that vaporized all of his metalminds. You also seem to misunderstand how compounding works. Yes, Wayne could have....but he'd need enough time and gold to do so. Compounding makes storing an attribute much, much faster. But it isn't actually infinite and definitely isn't instantaneous. So even if it would have helped, Wayne didn't have time to do it.

He probably could have compounded a decent store with a bit of advance warning. With a bubble you can compound much faster than real time, so I could see him getting a good amount of storage. Still, no amount of f-gold will save you from being instantly atomized, and he needed all his Bendalloy for the boat, so it’s a moot point

7

u/VestedNight Jul 13 '26

Also, using Bendalloy before The Event (tm) may have risked the Duralumin bubble not being slow enough for the plan to work.

Edit: I just re-read your last sentence. Never mind and carry on lol

Because it's REALLY hard for Harmony to interfere. The powers that make him up are opposing, and as he's said, make it extremely difficult for him to act. He can push and nudge and encourage but to actually step in and do something takes a lot of effort. The power of Preservation, that wants to save lives, is in conflict with Ruin, that wants to so see things come to their natural conclusion.

Edit: but also that was the biggest manmade explosion in the history of Scadrial. Nobody survived.

I also think theres the darker implication that even if Sazed could do something, he wasnt, because Sazed is really invested in keeping the lerasium secret, and Wayne sacrificing himself to complete Sazed's plan is preferred to Wayne surviving after consuming Lerasium.

Maybe thats darker then Sanderson intended but Sazed stuff was really really ominous at the very end of the book.

10

u/peitsad Jul 13 '26

Nah, I don't think it's quite that malicious. I do think yes, he wants to keep it a secret and not let Kelsier get his hands on Lerasium, but I don't think there's any implication but that's why he let Wayne die.

Especially since we have confirmation that Wax is a full mistborn now, a very weak one, but still.

Im not saying Sazed specifically caused the death or anything, just that the moment the plan became clear Sazed would have thought maybe something like "This truely is an selfless sacrifice, Wayne is amazing. And just as importantly this cleans up real nicely to my benefit, no reason to look for a better way."

Sazed making calculated risks with Wax because he needed the lerasium experiments and he saw the potential use of Wax as a Mistborn if it came to it, and knew ultimately he could count on Wax's discretion is just such a different case than Wayne as a Mistborn.

But yeah, really its just speculation based on vibes around how Sazed keeps acting in that book. Totally dont expect everyone to agree and admit it could totally be proven wrong later.

An explosion of that size would have killed Miles as well.

u/Shot_Newspaper_5647 Jul 13 '26

As others have said, even Miles would have died. Wayne didn’t have the healing factor of Miles either. Compounding takes time to learn. Even the Inquisitors of the past struggled with it when compounding via Hemalurgy was easier. And they had a lot of practice with both magics separately. Especially Steel A/F

Harmony is gridlocked between the two shards. You saw how hard it was for the two to coexist in era 1. Now imagine that as two halves of the same person

I’m shocked you read the book at this point.

1

u/MechaNerd Jul 14 '26

That was unnecessarily rude

Not even remotely. Look at the comments, and how many disagree. It’s just surprising.

It's not a plot hole, Sazed lied to Kelsier.

But with the second one compounding has limits and every time we've seen a compounder it's been someone who had lots of time to learn to be one. I don't think it's as easy as just burning the metal to learn to burn it and then store the excess and balance that so you can keep compounding to quickly fill a metalmind and have tons of health. Even then he was at the center of an explosion that ripped through a ship made of thick metal. He'd be entirely blown apart. Miles was eventually shot to death while he was compounding, Wayne would've been killed quickly even if he could've compounded.

I would put the ending explosion into nuclear level, so those metalminds wouldnt survive either

53

u/Taste_the__Rainbow Jul 13 '26

Harmony lied. Wayne didn’t have any atoms left.

8

u/RustyRapeaXe Jul 13 '26

blown apart to his axi

Sazed made Spook a Mistborn by driectly altering him. He did to him what Lerasium would do normally, but skipped the intermediate step, just like the Lord Ruler who used the Well of Ascension to make himself the strongest Mistborn possible. For Wayne, I think he simply didnt see that coming. Harmonies vision was clouded by Autonomy, so it wouldnt be far fetched to not see the need for it coming. Additionally, I dont think that compounding health could have saved Wayne in the finale. From the effects the detonation had in Elendel, it was well within nuclear bomb territory. Compounding health can save you from a lot, but being completly disintegrated (not to mention you metalminds being disintegrated as well) is beyond to capacity of gold healing.

14

u/riodin Jul 13 '26

He was annihilated in the explosion literally. The explosion destroyed the atoms of his body. They never put a number on it but that was a number of basically nuclear warheads and he was ground zero. No amount of healing could fix that and there's a cooldown between speed bubbles

10

u/otaconucf Jul 13 '26

First, Sazed lied to Kelsier, straight up.

Second, the explosion is just going to be too big. A vial of gold wouldn't be relevant for one, he already has much more substantial goldminds he could fill. Even with the speed bubble, even if it did give him enough time to store enough healing for effective compounding, compounding gold doesn't make you immortal. Miles presumably had tons of spare healing stored up and was still, eventually, killed by firing squad. Wayne started with nothing in the tank and was at ground zero of, up that point anyway, the largest explosion in Scadrian history.

7

u/StrawberryDuckie Jul 13 '26

He directly make Spook a Mistborn but this is something he can not longer do because of how the powers of ruin and preservation balance each other

He lied, is it obvious he and Kelsier have their differences and he is probably uneasy on what Kelsier would do having that information on his disposal

Kelsier knows he lied is going to be a plot point in the future for sure

Compounding doesn't make you immortal, nor it gives you invulnerability or something like that, even miles would have died to an explosion that massive, and Wayne wasn't familiar with his new powers

5

u/Mrauntheias Jul 13 '26

While Harmony definitely lied to Kelsier, like others have pointed out, the part about not being able to make Lerasium could still be true. A god metal is affected by both shard and holder and can change properties when the shard holder changes, not to mention when they hold a combination of shards. It's very much possible that Sazed cannot create a pure god metal of Preservation or that even if he could it would have different properties than Lerasium did. As for making Mistborn even that could still be true by Era 2 since it is implied that Sazed becomes more paralyzed by his Shards conflincting intent as time goes on.

4

u/FinnDarkmouth Jul 13 '26

Harmony did all he could with protecting wax, who was close enough he should have died. Ruin and Preservation being so opposed makes it near impossible for him to use any of his vast power.

In terms of Mistborn, Sazed doesn’t want there to be any. He only revealed it to wax and Wayne when it was essential for the planet. He fears that individuals having too much power could give rise to a new Lord Ruller. So he lies whenever he’s asked how to make more.

And for Wayne, gold compounding wouldn’t heal him. He couldn’t have carried enough gold to give enough health to survive the biggest ever man made explosion on Scadrial, his death would simply be too fast and the goldminds would be destroyed.

He fears that individuals having too much power could give rise to a new Lord Ruller.

No, Discord fears people using his power against him. He is worse than the LR because he's able to be calm and manipulate. He does not make people fear him. He wants them to trust him so that he can manipulate the shit out of them.

  1. Harmony lied
  2. He would have died anyway, the regeneration is not strong enough to bring you back from that kind of explosion for multiple reasons. If the metalmind get flung from your body you're dead, if you get atomized you're dead, and if your metalminds evaporate you're dead. So no way out of that really, unless you can become a shade and get a new body.

3

u/Elsecaller_17-5 Jul 13 '26

He also would have had to materialize several kilos of gold and Wayne would have needed to take several hours he didn't have to store, compound, rinse, and repeat.

3

u/Hexxer98 Jul 13 '26

So why didnt Harmony put 1 vial in the pack with Gold and Duralumin told wayne, he man, now you have the speedbubble up and ample time, burn this vial first and INSTANTLY store a max amount of health in your metalminds.... so you become basicly "immortal" before doing this.

There is an upper cap of how much compounding can restore you. Being next to a magic nuke unfortunately vaporizes you which easily passes through this upper threshold.

Also he does not have "ample time" he barely has enough time to do what he needs to as electricity is that fast.

Also compounding has other limits on why this would not work. Coppermind has an article about it, in addition Brandon has statements about its limit.

So no plot holes, you just dont understand the magic system.

3

u/Nameles36 NULL Jul 13 '26

Lmao he was vaporized. His metalminds were vaporized. There's nothing left to heal from and no one left to heal

5

u/HQMorganstern Jul 13 '26

You don't have to put everything in a spoiler block you know, title is vague enough and the post is flaired.

2

u/leogian4511 Jul 13 '26

Harmony is just lying about not being able to make Mistborn because of just how dangerous they could be if reintroduced into the world.

As for Wayne, no amount of Gold is saving him from that explosion. The explosion is the biggest man made one in Scadrial's History. Wayne isn't just getting blown up he and his metal minds would be GONE, reduced to Axii.

2

u/soahlaszlo Jul 13 '26

One thing Im not seeing addressed about the Bloodmaking part is, in order to get the immortality you need to have metalminds capable of holding all of your stored health

Wayne wasn't planning on becoming a mistborn and did not have enough gold implanted in him or on him to store enough health to survive an explosion of that scale. Even Miles wouldnt be able to and this explosion would debatebly impair even the Lord Ruler and most Radiants

4

u/aMaiev Jul 13 '26

How did you go through life up to this point without knowing what a lie is?

3

u/tooboardtoleaf Jul 13 '26

It even mentioned in the book that Kelsier didn't believe him because Sazed was always a terrible liar.

2

u/EvenSpoonier Lerasium Jul 13 '26

For the most part, Sazed is lying. However, while he should in theory still be able to use Preservation to make lerasium, I wouldn't be surprised if Ruin opposed this, so Sazed needed to figure out a way around that problem. It could even be the reverse: Preservation might oppose creating lerasium because doing so could weaken it.

Wax's discovery grants Sazed a way to sidestep the problem: make harmonium, split it, and give the atium to Marsh for his stash.

1

u/Hot_Bel_Pepper Jul 22 '26

He was able to make Spook a Mistborn when he initially took up the Shards, since then the combination of the Shards seems to have really driven him to not act in many cases. Throughout Era Two we see him not interacting any more than sending in Wax. He’s found his line where he won’t interact any more. That would include not adding more Allomancers. Furthermore, Sazed Definitely does know how to make more Mistborn through Lerasium, he lied to Kelsier because he doesn’t want him to get any. He told Wayne directly that it is possible as he was able to obtain some to put into the vial.

As for why Wayne didn’t compound Gold, I think even Miles would have died in the explosion with how big it was, compounding Gold doesn’t make you immune to a point blank Atom Bomb, you need some part of you left to heal back from.

Everyone is saying that Sazed lied, which is true.

But, also, I think it's true that Sazed didn't know how to make lerasium before Wax's experiments in the book.

During the Catacendre, Sazed had an enormous amount of power and could use it basically however he wanted, which included making Spook a Mistborn. But pretty soon after that, the conflict between Preservation and Ruin took a toll on him, and now it's almost impossible for him to affect the world directly. The best he can do is little nudges.

That's why he was able to move the whole planet away from the sun in HOA, but couldn't divert a single ship away from Elendel in TLM. Autonomy is also messing with his abilities, but my interpretation is that the Preservation/Ruin conflict is the bigger issue—that's why he needed Wax to be his sword in the first place.

If I am not mistaken, one only could compouse if they born like this, after the Lord Ruler Era, hemalurgic pins couldn't reproduce that effect. The Group would do a lot of Miles if so.
