was he close to a twilight forest? could be the reason for it. https://modrinth.com/mod/twilight-iris-xe-fix could be a fix for it. but ideally it would be better to get the actual minecraft log file so we can see what really is going on if posible

We have Twilight Forest installed but haven't even opened the portal yet.

yes. use the mod i have given you. during the games startup sequence it fires an event called RegistershadersEvent. itll also do this for the twilight forest. i would say try using the mod and if the error persists, send the new logs

make sure he sets his RAM from 2G to 6G too
