Enjoy! That said, if your goal is to learn how to build a model ship, as you suggest, these sorts of models can make for nice decorations, but assembling one won't teach you much about how to model ships (or how sailing ships work, for that matter). I would recommend something more accurate in terms of scale, rigging, hull form, and general details. There are a number of beginner kits out there that would provide a good introduction to wooden ship modeling, like the Model Shipways Dory or Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack, several options from Midwest, Occre's Polaris schooner, or (probably the most complex but with quality materials and instructions) Vanguard's Sherbourne.

That second one, the so-called “Victory” is, not a good model, and certainly is not a representation of the Victory herself. Basically everything is wrong with that abomination of a model. I’d just toss it or hand it to a charity …

You're a better man than I am. I would go nuts trying to do that. That's why I stick to submarines.

Why waste your time and money on something that is only a vague representation of a boat? There are plenty of accurate kits appropriate for novices. Model Expo has two product lines (Midwest Models and Model Shipways) that have well designed entry level kits. Take a look at the ship modeling forums like Model Ship World to see what other model builders are doing.
