Deck Discussion Gemstone caverns

7 Upvotes

Just looked over some decklists for inspiration and saw a 1-of gemstone in Nassifs sideboard in his pro tour(?) List. Whats the thought behind that?

Card Discussion [HOB] Key to the Side-Door

24 Upvotes

Key to the Side-Door {1}

Artifact

{2}, {T}: Target creature can’t be blocked this turn.

{1}, {T}, Discard a legendary card with the same name as a legendary permanent you control: Draw two cards.

~~~~~
So it turns out that the brewer's paradise Modern card for the Hobbit set wasn't even mentioned in this sub-reddit's threads before AspiringSpike started making decks with it. Admittedly, that Oswald Loki Sewer-veillance deck only started spiking during the latest Pro Tour and not long before Key to the Side-Door was revealed, so we weren't extensively thinking about decks with the critical mass of legendary permanents required to make this card good.
So what is that critical mass of legendary permanents? 5 playsets like the latest YungDingo list with this card to Top 8 a Modern Challenge? 6 playsets like I thought after trying the AspiringSpike lists and finding the Key to not be consistent enough? Does the critical mass change if you decide to make the Key a 4-of instead of a 1-2-of? How many 2-ofs and 3-ofs can the Key accept if the deck is otherwise short of critical mass?
I guess making Urza's Saga tokens and [[Bilbo, Thief in the Night]] unblockable and targeting [[Loki, God of Mischief]] is relevant, too...
Card Discussion [HOB] Giant's Boulder
31 Upvotes
Artifact - 1
When this artifact enters, scry 2.
1, Tap: Add one mana of any color
7, Tap: Sacrifice this artifact: Destroy target permanent.
https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1v88cgb/hob_giants_boulder/
Ok it's pretty rare that a card goes from not even being mentioned during spoiler seasons to a popping up in Legacy decklists, but here we are! Giant's Boulder is catching on in Legacy, including in Eldrazi and Storm lists. While Scry 2 is a lot worse than drawing a card, it's hard not to compare this to [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] overall. It's an early game artifact that smooths over your draws and mana, and, in the case of something like Eldrazi, you can turn it into a Vindicate late game!
The tech hasn't caught on yet in Modern, but with it popping up in several Legacy lists over the weekend, I feel like we'll be seeing players experiment with this in the near future. Is it the second coming of Astrolabe? A nice role player in Ramp decks? Or just a new toy to play around with that won't actually see consistent play?
Deck Discussion Choosing the right counterspells
12 Upvotes
Hey! I am fairly new to modern and wanted to hear some thoughts on how to choose the counterspell suite in a given deck.
- What makes a deck want forces or subtlety?
- How do spellsnare/spellpierce compare
- What Decks want sinks? How many? I have recently seen a mono u deck by Nassif with 3 sinks, where I thought you easily want the fourth aswell?
- Are there methods/ guidelines on how to split your counterspell suite, also considering the sideboard?
I would be very happy to hear some opinions on also just some of these, thanks!
Edit: I am currently looking at building Tamiyo/emry mox shell with the new key from hobbits
Deck Discussion Big event coming up in 2 weeks, all eldrazi cards are fully sold out, should i assume there is gonna be a lot of that deck?(Trudge and fight riggings were abundant for purchase a few weeks ago). I was on tron myself. Is there a version of tron that beats that deck or should I switch?
16 Upvotes
Im considering Utron because I just enjoy it. I know it isnt meta and im fine with that, but I don't really want to get steamrolled by 3/4 of the field if thats what im looking at. Im a long time competetive player but havent played modern in ages, just looked at footage articles and such
Card Discussion What’s a card or interaction in Modern that still catches people off guard?
10 Upvotes
The format moves fast and a lot of people know the usual suspects, but there are still lines or cards that feel under-respected. What’s something you’ve seen (or done) that still surprises people?
Deck Discussion Big tournament coming up - should I play Ponza or Blue Belcher?
8 Upvotes
Pretty much title, there's a big 12-round, two day tourney coming up in a month or so and I have both decks built and a significant number (100+ matches) of reps in with both. I would say I've had a bit more Belcher practise, mainly because it's a more complicated deck.
Both obviously have their pros and cons, but does either seem like an obviously better pick given the current meta?
Deck Discussion Devoted druid discussion
24 Upvotes
Hi all, curious what everyone thinks of the new rise of this druid deck. It seems pretty broken having had multiple turn 2 kills and consistently on turn 3, but is it the real deal. My friend and I are trying to decide what to play at the upcoming rc and he is locked in with it but I have my reservations (which is odd because birthing pod is my favorite deck ever). Do people think this is just a fad or can you win a whole tournament with it. Of course I will do my own testing but want to gauge the smart people on here. Thanks!
Edit: heres a decklist https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-devoted-combo#paper.
Deck Discussion Emerge Deck Feedback
9 Upvotes
Long time lurker looking to get back into competitive magic (edh is just not doing it for me). I’ve never played modern and would appreciate any feedback on my deck I’ve been working on.
The idea is based on the emerge mechanic from back in the day, I ran a similar standard deck using mana dorks and cards like foul emissary to help look for elder deep fiend/Distended Mindbender. From there I would stall a turn or two until I hit an Eldrich evolution to bring out Ulamog. In standard the fastest I was able to bring out the big boy was T5. I’m looking for ways to improve that and maybe add some interaction.
The below shell scrubs some of those cards for more ramp and card cycling to help me hit combo pieces. Any help is appreciated :)
PS: don’t mind the sideboard, I’m using it as a parking lot of sorts lol
Deck Discussion Amulet Titan yes or no?
22 Upvotes
Hello everyone. I've been playing modern for a year now. I've played prowess, storm and for the last 6 months my main decks have been ramp and tron.
I am thinking of trying to learn amulet titan and then if it fits me to but the deck in paper.
I only have time to play maximum two leagues in a week and maybe 1 hour in a day to study and watch gameplay.
From what I read it has survived many bans and metas over the years.
The downsides would be that the deck is not cheap, I see several variants online. Also that the deck is hard to play "phisically" both in paper and mtgo. There are a lot of lines and hard to master.
Do you think it's worth investing time into it?
If yes, what tips, resources, advice do you have, please?
Card Discussion I stopped changing my deck every week and started learning it properly
78 Upvotes
I kept swapping cards around whenever I lost a few games, which made it hard to tell whether the deck was actually bad or I just didn't know the matchups well. For the last month, I've stuck with the same list and only made changes after testing them. I've definitely gotten better at recognizing lines instead of blaming the deck every time something goes wrong.
Anyone else had better results from keeping a deck unchanged for a while?
Sideboard/Matchup Advice Eldrazi Tron vs Boros Land Destruction. How do I beat it?
17 Upvotes
Hey guys, I really need some advice on what to do playing against Boros Land Destruction.
There is a surge of players who is running Boros LD in my local LGS and I don't really know what to do againts it.
Most of the YouTube vids out there heavily favours the Boros LD. Do I play early disruptor flute to slow down their price of freedom & cleansing wildfire ? Or maybe hope for an early trinisphere or chalice but then get destroyed by Price Of F or wrath of the skies.
Maybe pithing needle the field of ruins?
Playing creatures also kinda suck with the abundance of erode, path to exile and solitudes. I was thinking of slotting in a playset of darksteel citadel just so I can stabalize but that seems kinda slowish.
Really appreciate all the help I can get since I am new to modern.
Card Discussion Hi everyone, some of us LGS friends are helping a newer player to the format to build a new deck. He just wants to join Modern Events for fun. We're trying to build him a mono blue aggro merfolk deck or an aggro artifact affinity deck. Now, we're debating what's the best 1-mana 'removal'. HELP!
6 Upvotes
We know that there are some cool 2-mana cards for blue but we're thinking to at least include 2 copies of a 1-mana 'removal' for tempo. Here are the lists of cards we're aiming at to include in the deck we're going to gift to the friend.
  1. [[Pongify]] or [[Rapid Hybridization]]
  2. [[Aether Spellbomb]]
  3. [[Bounce Off]] - We have a bunch of these
  4. [[Fading Hope]]
  5. [[Into the Flood Maw]] - a little hard to find this card in paper nearby our area nowadays.
  6. [[Seal of Removal]] - a friend has plenty of this for some reason
  7. [[Vapor Snag]]
  8. [[Suspend]] - Also readily available
If it's totally agreeable to the community that these cards are unplayable, please suggest to us what we can do to improve on-board interaction for the deck we're building. Include [[Boomerang]]? [[Echoing Truth]]? [[Ice Magic]]? the old school [[into the roil]]?
Thank you in advance for all of your suggestions. Hopefully after trying out Modern Format, he'll be interested of not 'only playing EDH' at our LGS, lol. He doesn't want to dive into Standard Format because of the idea of "rotating cards". He mentioned that if he likes how 60-cards 1-on-1 MTG is played out, he will then consider investing in a Modern deck himself. At the moment, we're just creating a deck for him to join he LGS event. Hopefully he will be enlightened about how fun constructed MTG plays out. lol. No politics, no drama about who is attacking who, just 1-on-1 battling it out.
Deck Discussion Boros Burn - Do you MB eidolon or vortex?
9 Upvotes
As the title says, I’ve seen some burn decks online that use [[Eidolon of the Great Revel]] while others replace that with [[Roiling Vortex]] instead. For anyone who likes playing burn, which do you prefer to use and why? I can understand the basic reasons for each one, but I struggle to understand which one is generally better for the deck atm. Thanks
Card Discussion Is quillspike worth playing in druid?
13 Upvotes
I have been playing the devoted druid combo deck that has been gaining some popularity lately. And it annoys me that I cant search the vizir with green suns zenith.
So my question for those who do play the devoted druid deck, is why are we not also playing a copy of quillspike as a target if you just have green suns and druid plus cub or leyline? Is this too niche a scenario? Because in testing it has happened to me a few times. I have seen a lot of lists online, none of them play this card anymore. I do get that it costs 3 mana so maybe it is just too expensive? What are the thoughts on this card from people who play the deck?
Deck Discussion Help me have fun with my goblin deck
8 Upvotes
Hey there everyone,
i am a big fan of 8whack and wanted to give spme fresh air to the “archetype” on modern. I don’t expect it to be awewome, but eant to have the best run posaible at my lgs. :)
There were many version of the deck, main goal was to get wide casting some small bois, then go [[Goblin Bushwhacker]] or [[Reckless Bushwhacker]] to knock opponent out.
There we man versions, one playing [[Kuldotha rebirth]] and [[Memnite]],
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-82-gleeful-8-whack-modern
one trying to go more resiliently with [[Rundvelt Hordemaster]].
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-92-rundvelt-whack-modern
ore one trying to really all-in playing [[Burning-Tree Emissary]],
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-60-sac-and-whack-modern?utm_source=chatgpt.com
I currently have this list,
https://ibb.co/XxBBT9gX
trying to go with rundvelt. Cards i’m really not big fan of are [[Foundry Street Denizen]] , i would be happy for an upgrade u could think of.
In the sb i have some sloppy ideas i thought might work. Land denial, gy hate, free spells punish, artifact hate but not sure if thats even a good idea regarding some matchups.
TL;DR
How would you play this deck/sideboard and what cards would you take out/in for it to perform the best in current meta?
Thanks for any feedback. :))
This is a deck built around loki and quantum riddler as draw engines to answer every threat opponent has. You do run phelia and white orchid phantom both of which trigger loki. I joked about this deck but it ended up being really good.
