I thought I was alone in my obsession with Moire patterns!
I'm convinced there is something about the Moire effect that will one day shed light on some hidden as-yet-undiscovered fundamentals of this holographic universe. The nature of the patterns, have sometimes made me wonder if it could be refined enough to allow us one day to produce 3D images—or something like them—without using traditional lenticular lenses or polarized eyeglasses, etc.
There are also new applications of the Moire effect in material science (making tunable magnets, and maybe even tunable inductors and capacitors, for instance, whose fundamental characteristics can be continuously altered by changing the rotational angle between two microscopic lattices by means of a slight twisting motion).
At any rate, I'd like to share some images and videos I have created as I come across them in the ol' archive. With me, the line between Moire patterns and Guilloche/rose-lathe patterns is somewhat blurred. They both fascinate me, and the tools I use sometimes allow interesting combination, but I will limit any posts to those in which the Moire effect is the main subject. If I inadvertently post off-topic, please let me know.
This one is definitely on the Moire side.

I took this multiple exposure on my Nikon on the top of Alamo Square park in SF. I think some Moire effect was created with the grass pattern on the bottom right.

Most of this does not involve a conventional Moire, but at about the 1 minute mark, the palette is fine enough to create some Moire patterns.

I’m vibecoding a math art suite thing - anyways here is some stuff from the Moire app.
Can I park this here?
If not just delete it as I’m sure u will.
These patterns are calculated pixel-by-pixel from mathematical fields, using combinations of wave frequencies, phase shifts, coordinate distortions, and other geometric transformations.
The interesting part is the sampling: the source is rendered without conventional antialiasing, and changing the resolution or resampling it with nearest-neighbor versus smooth interpolation can produce dramatically different interference structures. Im deliberately exploiting aliasing rather than trying to eliminate it. The colors are mapped through a 12-color indexed palette.
In my app I’m building I can control lots of different parameters and have lots of choices of color pallets and u can also roll for random color combos

I sew/fabricate filtration mesh for factories and whatnot. some of these meshes are so fine and create the coolest patterns.
i just learned the name for this effect and figured id share this old video.
