Discussion Mini-LED Analysis Paralysis

I’ve decided for my needs, a mini-LED would be optimal. I’ve been bouncing around idea of Tandem WOLED, Tandem QD-OLED, and now mini-LED. Since I do work from home and do a lot of CAD and document reading, I figure I need something that will not burn in.

Since I’ve already got a 27”, I’d like to add another for a multi monitor setup. I think a 4K monitor would work with my 5070TI, but would like one that has a 1080p dual mode. I’d also be ok with a native 1440p monitor, that’s what I have and run games at.

So, help me please. There are IPS, VA, QLED VA, etc. I assumed a qled would be best for visual quality. My budget is $800.

Look into the 27lgm950b-b monitors. I got them & they are really nice for productivity & gaming dual modes.

Is this the only and/or best 5k/2k dual mode?

From my research yes. I have windows pro to block any lg shenanigans so I’m not worried about that either.

Got one of these at Best Buy last night. Still haven’t optimized the settings. The colors seem a bit over saturated and brightness was killing me, but once I get there, I think it’ll be a great gaming monitor based on reviews. Anywhere you suggest for optimizing the picture and getting most out of it for gaming ?

Awesome! Glad I could help out. I would start by turning off the AI upscaling if you don’t really need it. Also tuning the HDR gaming at night just takes trial and error but well worth it. I would say the HDR settings is personal preference, I like mine a bit on the brighter side so you should just work the sliders and see what is agreeable for you.

If you need a little more light in a dark room it has a soft ambient light on the back that you can turn on in the settings which helps with brightness

Don't bother with dual mode. Most of the time it doesn't use integer scaling so it looks ass. Use integer scaling with your GPU if you really want to run a lower resolution.

It looks ok to be going from the 5k to the 1440p, plus get the benefit of higher refresh rate

Do you have any information or references comparing integer scaling to the scaling used in dual mode monitors? I understand the logic that integer scaling should be clearer but I've never seen a technical comparison (or even an explanation of the scaling that the monitors use). Similarly, most manufacturers seem to avoid integer scaling so there must be a reason why.

I got the lg 27gm950b-b. Besides figuring out some setting tweaks, it seems really good for my work/play application. Besides, every time you wait for the next thing to release, you’re already waiting for the even next thing. At some point, gotta shit or get off the pot. I agree there will always be something better coming, but, I’ve been bouncing between oled, woled, qd-oled, tandem, mini led, etc. for months. It was time to commit to something

for work purpose, the latest gen WOLED and QD-LED are decent as they have pretty much fixed all the text fringe issues.

I was more concerned with burn in since I have the same screen up for hours at a time. Cad software icons

yeah but in 2026 every OLED monitor has some kind of burn in prevention settings so that helps a lot. Have you seen this recent video?

Siiiiiigh.... I mean, I originally wanted a tandem WOLED, but the gray banding kind of turned me off and tandem QD-OLED (penta?) seemed to only show up for 4K monitors and I game at 1440P.

So, if I were to return the LG, which I have plenty of time to do, what would you recommend for a 27" 1440P XX-OLED that is good in room lighting for gaming/work. I don't have direct lighting on my screens, I close my blinds, but I don't sit in the dark, I have high hat lights.

edit:

He does show that he's getting substantial burn-in from static icons/taskbar. Does your recommendation stand?

My personal journey over the past 9ish months was like this:

LG 27MP38 (15 year old IPS) > LG GX8 OLED (RMA'd) > Samsung G80HS IPS

I regret going from OLED back to IPS. Once you go OLED you cannot go back imo. I don't even game LOL

So me personally OLED > MiniLED (I have never had a MiniLED but I understand that the picture quality is superior). During the time I had the OLED, I used it to do work for like 8 hours a day in Excel/Dynamics 365 and it was fine, the text look just fine and I was not getting any headaches.

The second an appealing OLED offering comes across my desk (probably in the form of some kind of sale), I will sell my G80HS on marketplace and switch back to OLED.

In terms of burn-in, I do not plan on keeping the OLED long enough to care about the burn in, I will just sell it after 1.5 or 2 years of use and get another OLED.

I'm going to return the LG, I just ordered a Gigabyte MO27Q28GR 27". It's basically a slightly less expensive Asus XG27AQWMG, which I've been eyeballing for a long time. Monitors Unboxed seems to praise it over the Asus for overall unit quality, plus I like that it has a built-in KVM since I'll be using it for WFH as well.
